Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tract describes in detail the semiconductor components of the high-frequency front end-the electronic tuner-of televisions and VCRs. These high-frequency components substantially determine performance, including clarity of reception, and thus their quality is crucial to the success of electronic tuners. The semiconductor devices involved-voltage-variable capacitance diodes, band-switch diodes, dual-gate FETs, and others-are discussed in this book, as is their performance as mediators of tuning and amplification. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of distortion characteristics of tuning diodes and FETs, which are essential in providing tuners with high endurance against interfering signals. Design and fabrication processes well suited for mass production are also described. The content will be most informative not only to those involved in R&D and production of semiconductor devices, but also to high-frequency systems designers.

Book excerpt: Some years ago it was not uncommon for materials scientists, even within the electronics industry, to work relatively independently of device engi neers. Neither group had a means to determine whether or not the materials had been optimized for application in specific device structures. This mode of operation is no longer desirable or possible. The introduction of a new material, or a new form of a well known material, now requires a close collaborative effort between individuals who represent the disciplines of materials preparation, materials characterization, device design and pro cessing, and the analysis of the device operation to establish relationships between device performance and the materials properties. The develop ment of devices in heteroepitaxial thin films has advanced to the present state specifically through the unusually close and active interchange among individuals with the appropriate backgrounds. We find no book available which brings together a description of these diverse disciplines needed for the development of such a materials-device technology. Therefore, the authors of this book, who have worked in close collaboration for a number of years, were motivated to collect their experiences in this volume. Over the years there has been a logical flow of activity beginning with heteroepi taxial silicon and progressing through the III-V and II-VI compounds. For each material the early emphasis on material preparation and characteriza tion later shifted to an emphasis on the analysis of the device characteristics specific to the materials involved.

Book excerpt: For some time there has been a need for a semiconductor device book that carries diode and transistor theory beyond an introductory level and yet has space to touch on a wider range of semiconductor device principles and applica tions. Such topics are covered in specialized monographs numbering many hun dreds, but the voluminous nature of this literature limits access for students. This book is the outcome of attempts to develop a broad course on devices and integrated electronics for university students at about senior-year level. The edu cational prerequisites are an introductory course in semiconductor junction and transistor concepts, and a course on analog and digital circuits that has intro duced the concepts of rectification, amplification, oscillators, modulation and logic and SWitching circuits. The book should also be of value to professional engineers and physicists because of both, the information included and the de tailed guide to the literature given by the references. The aim has been to bring some measure of order into the subject area examined and to provide a basic structure from which teachers may develop themes that are of most interest to students and themselves. Semiconductor devices and integrated circuits are reviewed and fundamental factors that control power levels, frequency, speed, size and cost are discussed. The text also briefly mentions how devices are used and presents circuits and comments on representative applications. Thus, the book seeks a balance be tween the extremes of device physics and circuit design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the development of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and liquid crystal materials (LCs) in Japan. The Committee of Organic Materials Research for Information Sciences of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) planned the book to document essential LCD innovations and developments since the beginnings of the field-effect LCD technology in 1970. The book illustrates the remarkable effort and progress behind those flat, lightweight, and high-information-content LCDs that have become the indispensable human–machine interface for virtually all electronic devices. In contrast to other publications on this topic, the book illustrates the interdisciplinary character of the LCD technology and its crucial importance for technological progress of the field far beyond displays. It also gives insights into breakthrough innovations not revealed in other publications. Moreover, prospects for the development of LC research toward new fields of applications are provided. In line with its interdisciplinary character, the book targets researchers in basic science as well as engineers and researchers in industry.

Book excerpt: The revolution is well underway. Our understanding and utilization of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are growing at an explosive rate with a worldwide market approaching billions of dollars. In time, microdevices will fill the niches of our lives as pervasively as electronics do right now. But if these miniature devices are to fulfill their mammoth potential, today's engineers need a thorough grounding in the underlying physics, modeling techniques, fabrication methods, and materials of MEMS. The MEMS Handbook delivers all of this and more. Its team of authors-unsurpassed in their experience and standing in the scientific community- explore various aspects of MEMS: their design, fabrication, and applications as well as the physical modeling of their operations. Designed for maximum readability without compromising rigor, it provides a current and essential overview of this fledgling discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Advanced Study Institute on process and device modeling for integrated circuit design was held in Louvain-la-Neuve. Belgium on July 19-29. 1977 under the auspices of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The Institute was organized by a scientific organizing committee consisting of Professor F. Van de Wiele of the Universite Catholique de Louvain. Professor W. L. Engl of the Technische Hochschule Aachen and Professor P. Jespers of the Universite Catholique de Louvain. This book represents the contributions of the lecturers at the Institute and the chapters present a concise treatment of a very timely subject. namely. process and device modeling for integrated circuit design. The organization of the book parallels the program at the Institute with an introd0ction ·comprised of a review of mo deling and basic semiconductor physics. This is followed by the chapters devoted to basic technologies. modeling of bipolar and MoS devices. The last chapter of the book presents the specific topic of process modeling. The subject matter of this book is suitable for a wide range of interests from the advanced student. through the practisihg physicist and engineer. to the research worker. Although a novice may find some difficulty with the mathematical development. he can acquire a perspective into the field of process and device modeling for integrated circuit design with this bDOk. Likewise. portions of this book may be used as a textbook since the chap ters are intructional and self-contained.
