The protagonists of these twelve stories are well-meaning but at odds with their surroundings and their lives. The time to which they escape—through time travel—doesn't always fulfill their expectations in the way they had hoped, but sometimes, they can still find their dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LEAP INTO THE FUTURE, AND SHOOT BACK TO THE PAST H. G. Wells’s seminal short story “The Time Machine,” published in 1895, provided the springboard for modern science fiction’s time travel explosion. Responding to their own fascination with the subject, the greatest visionary writers of the twentieth century penned some of their finest stories. Here are eighteen of the most exciting tales ever told, including “Time’s Arrow” In Arthur C. Clarke’s classic, two brilliant physicists finally crack the mystery of time travel—with appalling consequences. “Death Ship” Richard Matheson, author of Somewhere in Time, unveils a chilling scenario concerning three astronauts who stumble upon the conundrum of past and future. “Yesterday was Monday” If all the world’s a stage, Theodore Sturgeon’s compelling tale follows the odyssey of an ordinary joe who winds up backstage. “Rainbird” R.A. Lafferty reflects on what might have been in this brainteaser about an inventor so brilliant that he invents himself right out of existence. “Timetipping” What if everyone time-traveled except you? Jack Dann provides some surprising answers in this literary gem. . . . as well as stories by Poul Anderson • L. Sprague de Camp • Joe Haldeman • John Kessel • Nancy Kress • Henry Kuttner • Ursula K. Le Guin • Larry Niven • Charles Sheffield • Robert Silverberg • Connie Willis By turns frightening, puzzling, and fantastic, these stories engage us in situations that may one day break free of the bonds of fantasy . . . to enter the realm of the future: our future. Note: "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury and "I'm Scared" by Jack Finney are not included in this edition.

From a man who steals his physicist father's plans to drop into history in the old west, in the story Free Falling, to the story of a door, found in an old junk shop, that may be able to take you anywhere, even to your lost love, in Jessup's Door. From the story of a man who falls asleep on the way to a play and wakes up in the past, in Jessup's Drive, to the story of a writer with writer's block who inherits the cabin where the greatest case of writer's block in history happened, in All I Can Be. Seven tales to make you wonder. Including the title story Time and the Gloaming, a new, never before published story that asks the question, what if people are already here... from the future?

This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-travel continues to exercise its mesmeric fascination upon writers, readers and editors of science fiction alike. This is probably because almost all of us, at one time or another, have longed greatly to visit either the future or the past. Perhaps, in view of the dangerous paradoxes such travel must involve, it is a good thing that such horological journeys have to date been confined to the printed page. This book consists of a collection of seven short science fiction stories about time travel. The stories are (1) The Amazing Mrs. Mimms (Tea had a wonderful effect on her. Sipping it slowly, she felt the strength returning to her tired system), (2) The Ultroom Error (Smith admitted he had made an error involving a few murders?and a few thousand years. He was entitled to a sense of humor, though, even in the Ultroom!), (3) A World Apart (Most men of middle age would welcome a chance to live their lives a second time. But Coulter did not), (4) The Skull (Conger agreed to kill a stranger he had never seen. But he would make no mistakes because he had the stranger's skull under his arm), (5) The Man from Time (Deep in the Future he found the answer to Man's age-old problem), (6) Benefactor (He clutched at the lever with more force than he'd intended. It was set for further in the future....), and (7) The Man who Saw the Future. This book is the third one in a series of seven books on this topic. It is a pleasure to publish this new, high quality, and affordable edition of these timeless stories.

Book excerpt: The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, published in 1895. Wells is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. Wells had considered the notion of time travel before, in a short story titled "The Chronic Argonauts" (1888). This work, published in his college newspaper, was the foundation for The Time Machine.Wells frequently stated that he had thought of using some of this material in a series of articles in the Pall Mall Gazette until the publisher asked him if he could instead write a serial novel on the same theme. Wells readily agreed and was paid £100 (equal to about £11,000 today) on its publication by Heinemann in 1895, which first published the story in serial form in the January to May numbers of The New Review (newly under the nominal editorship of W. E. Henley).[2] Henry Holt and Company published the first book edition (possibly prepared from a different manuscript)[3] on 7 May 1895; Heinemann published an English edition on 29 May.[2] These two editions are different textually and are commonly referred to as the "Holt text" and "Heinemann text", respectively. Nearly all modern reprints reproduce the Heinemann text.[citation needed]The story reflects Wells's own socialist political views, his view on life and abundance, and the contemporary angst about industrial relations. It is also influenced by Ray Lankester's theories about social degeneration and shares many elements with Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel Vril, the Power of the Coming Race (1871).[5] Other science fiction works of the period, including Edward Bellamy's novel Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888) and the later film Metropolis (1927), dealt with similar themes. This work is an early example of the Dying Earth subgenre. The portion of the novella that sees the Time Traveller in a distant future where the sun is huge and red also places The Time Machine within the realm of eschatology, i.e. the study of the end times, the end of the world, and the ultimate destiny of humankind. The book's protagonist is an English scientist and gentleman inventor living in Richmond, Surrey, in Victorian England, and identified by a narrator simply as the Time Traveller.
