Before Jules de Grandin, John Silence, and Carnacki the Ghost Finder . . . The roots of occult detective fiction reach as far back as ancient Rome, where two master plots emerged. The first involves a character whose courage and intelligence solves the mystery of a troubled spirit: a ghostly client. In the second, a character must investigate and vanquish a much more wicked supernatural foe: a demonic culprit. Showcasing E.T.A. Hoffmann, Charlotte Riddell, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Machen, and other authors, Ghostly Clients & Demonic Culprits charts the history of both plots, from antiquity to fully formed occult detectives in the early 1900s.

This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Sherlock Holmes pooh-poohed the notion that the supernatural could invade our daily lives, not all fictional detectives have. There is a long history of literary sleuths who accept the reality of those supernatural intrusions in order to solve a case-be it a haunting or a crime. There are also characters who rely on their own supernatural abilities in their battle against lawbreakers. These are the occult detectives. Bram Stoker's Dr. Van Helsing, Ambrose Bierce's John Silence, William Hope Hodgson's Carnaki, and Seabury Quinn's Jules de Grandin are among the best remembered of the first wave of occult detectives. Their adventures were enough to fill books, though. Some of their colleagues lasted only for two, three, or four stories. These are the short-series occult detectives, and they come together here for the first time. Fitz-James O'Brien's Harry Escott, Gelett Burgess's Enoch Garrish, Algernon Blackwood's Jim Shorthouse, L.T. Meade and Robert Eustace's Diana Marburg, A.M. Burrage's Derek Scarpe, and Conrad Richter's Matson Bell unravel sixteen dark mysteries in this collection. Tim Prasil, who has re-written the history of this blending of mystery and supernatural fiction, introduces the book and each author/detective while supplying useful and interesting footnotes along the way. Giving Up the Ghosts belongs on the shelf of any occult-detective fiction connoisseur-or in the hands of readers eager to discover this exciting cross-genre.

Book excerpt: Although fantasy and supernatural literature have long and celebrated histories, many critics contend that the fantastic and the supernatural have no place in the logical, rational, world of the detective story. This book is the first extensive study of the fantastic in detective fiction and it explores the highly debated question of whether detective fiction and the fantastic can comfortably coexist. The "locked room" mystery--which often uses the fantastic as a red herring to eventually be debunked by reason and logic--has long been among the most popular subgenres of detective fiction. This book also explores stories featuring almost supernaturally gifted detectives, stories where the supernatural is truly encountered, and stories with ambiguous endings. Close to 500 detective stories from 1841 to 2000, in which the fantastic or supernatural plays a central role, are discussed and analyzed. Although not all the stories are judged to be successful as detective tales, in the great majority, the fantastic enlivens the tale and deepens the mystery without weakening the detective elements.

Book excerpt: A Collection of Classic Short Ghost Stories Carnacki The Ghost Finder By William Hope Hodgson Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder is a collection of occult detective short stories by author William Hope Hodgson. It was first published in 1913 by the English publisher Eveleigh Nash. In 1947, a new edition of 3,050 copies was published by Mycroft & Moran and included three additional stories. The Mycroft & Moran version is listed as No. 53 in Queen's Quorum: A History of the Detective-Crime Short Story As Revealed by the 100 Most Important Books Published in this Field Since 1845 by Ellery Queen. The stories are inspired by the tradition of fictional detectives such as Sherlock Holmes. Carnacki lives in a bachelor flat in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea; the stories are told from a first-person perspective by Dodgson, one of Carnacki's four friends, much as Holmes' adventures were told from Watson's point of view. (The other three friends are Jessop, Arkwright and Taylor). Whereas the Holmes stories never made use of the supernatural except as a red herring, this is the central theme of the Carnacki stories, though five of the stories have non-supernatural endings. The character of Carnacki was inspired in part by Dr. Hesselius, a supernaturally inclined scientist who appeared in short stories by the Irish fantasy writer Sheridan Le Fanu, notably the early and influential vampire story "Carmilla". Carnacki is also highly reminiscent of Algernon Blackwood's John Silence. Includes; No. 1--THE GATEWAY OF THE MONSTER No. 2--THE HOUSE AMONG THE LAURELS No. 3--THE WHISTLING ROOM No. 4--THE HORSE OF THE INVISIBLE No. 5--THE SEARCHER OF THE END HOUSE No. 6--THE THING INVISIBLE

Book excerpt: A murder has been committed and another could be at any moment. A fortune has gone missing, a map has mysteriously appeared and something is frightening the children at night. All is in confusion and the only thing for certain is that a detective is needed, but the first detective got a glimpse of what the children are afraid of and left without so much as a word. There are times when it becomes clear that a different sort of detective is needed; one who understands or at least accepts that threats are not always human or even physical and that solving the case will take more than a sharp eye. This is the domain of the Occult Detective. Literary history is rich with great Occult Detectives and A Grimoire of Eldritch Inquests seeks to honor and add to them as many of today's most talented Occult Detective authors offer their original tales. Steeped in tradition but with a modern edge, the first of two volumes presents 22 tales of monsters, magic and mystery investigated by those that book their trade by it.
