Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project started out as an heirloom document for my grandchildren. That is still the main purpose. It had been expanded by family members who read some of the rough drafts to share these stories with others. With this input, I offer these stories to all that are interested.Fifty years, half a century, two score and ten, five decades. Sounds like a long time. It would be 350 in dog or cat years! The critters (pets) I've shared my life with. This book describes fifty years of living with some of the creatures of this planet other than humans. Most people have interactions with other animals (good and bad) at some point in their lives. Every person has some interesting story to tell about how they were affected by some pet or animal they came into contact with or were told about or read about. My story covers a roughly fifty-year period from early childhood up to when this story was published. There are many animals that I have interacted with that have affected me in some way. I have listed just the critters that I actually lived with. Some of the animals lead good long lives while others' times were cut short for one reason or another. Some of the critters are not your normal pets (squirrel). I have tried to keep the stories chronological, but many of the animals' stories overlapped with some of the other critters they shared their home with. Each one had its own personality, its own quirks, and its own endearments on my heart. Life has been richer because of the experiences I was able to share with these amazing animals.

"Doc" Tebbe rolled into the town of Fort Recovery, Ohio, in June 1962 ready to get work as a veterinarian. More than fifty years later, he's still practicing his craft. It's a career he knew he'd embark on as a young boy, when his prized cow, Shirley, suffered complications while giving birth. He watched on in horror from a hay chute as the veterinarian, Dr. Steinke, began cutting off the calf's legs, head, and ribs, yelling to no one in particular, "I hate to do this, but it's our only chance to save the cow." Both the cow and the calf died, and it broke Tebbe's heart. That day, he vowed to become a better veterinarian than Dr. Steinke to make up for what he did to his Shirley. Tebbe has since had colossal failures that have made him realize how bad Dr. Steinke must have felt that day he failed. For instance, on his very first day of work, he accidentally killed a cat. Join a small-town veterinarian on some very big adventures in 50 Years a Veterinarian.

Book excerpt: Bloomingdale was named for the beautiful spring flowers and elm, maple, crepe myrtle, and ginkgo trees in the area. A unique neighborhood, Bloomingdale was settled in 1877 to provide housing for blue-collar workers in Washington. Landowners had estates, commercial properties, and expansive orchards. The area was also a hub of transportation and home to one of two large flour mills in Washington. With the influx of workers and freed people, the need for housing became urgent, and developers reexamined the land they had set aside for industry and orchards. The city worked to improve roads and set up trolley lines, and additional residential housing was constructed by the end of the 1890s. The Army Corps of Engineers built the McMillan Park Reservoir and Washington City Tunnel between 1882 and 1902. The site of the reservoir was designated a historic landmark by the D.C. Historic Preservation Review in 1991. Images of America: Bloomingdale presents images collected from Washington-area libraries, historical societies, neighbors, and historians.

What is God like? Why so much evil and pain? But today's readers often get tripped up by the ancient writing style and wonder... Did Moses really write Genesis? Many of the reports seem so odd—are they scientifically accurate? Does that matter? How does Genesis relate to other ancient accounts of creation, the origin of evil, and the great flood? Stephen M. Miller—a seminary-educated news journalist—presents viewpoints from a wide range of Christian Bible experts, along with gorgeous graphics and a touch of dry humor. Whether you're a Bible newbie or a longtime reader, this visual stroll through the first book of the Bible will help you bridge the gap between then and now.

Book excerpt: Treasures in the Attic: Gifts from a Woman of Faith is the true story of author Dell Anne Hines Afzals grandmother, Lois Annie, and the treasures she left their family. It is documented in memory of her love and strength and shows the trials and tribulations of how she lived her life. It also shows an extremely hard-working, honest, and loving woman who would not allow those heartaches she suffered in her life to limit or taint her examples to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Learning of her tragedies and hardships and how she survived them has given Afzal a sense of purpose and a belief that she can do all things through faith and hard work. Her purpose in sharing her grandmothers life with the reader is to offer comfort and hope to those who are suffering. She offers her prayers and absolute faith in the understanding that whatever pitfalls may be thrown our way, we must never give up and we are not alone. The treasures found in her attic on the day she moved from her treasured home of over fifty years offer a glimpse of true caring and respect she left for those she loves. The miracle of the recovery of those gifts and a lost member of the family will open your heart and soul to the true miracles of life.

'I had a letter from George this morning - he says Corfu's wonderful. Why don't we pack up and go to Greece?' 'Very well, dear, if you like,' said Mother unguardedly. Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family - acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog - take off for the island of Corfu. But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Recounted with immense humour and charm My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood. 'Durrell has an uncanny knack of discovering human as well as animal eccentricities' Sunday Telegraph

Book excerpt: Tales from the Dog-catcher who captures your heart. A "must read" for anyone with an interest in animals of any kind. Critter Capers offers a collection of short stories and gentle humour easily shared and enjoyed by a broad range of age groups, from early teens to adult. Over his 2+ decades as an Animal Control Officer Wittek's "career leap" was anything but dull, with duties ranging from the simple collection and adoption of stray and abandoned pets, to the rescue of animals whose curiosity and lapse in judgement trapped or otherwise jeopardised their safety. In Western Nevada, due to its often rural nature, animal control also includes dealing with a variety of wildlife -- the occasional bear, cougar, or deer--that try to choose city life over their native mountains and foothills. With the humour and compassion that made Wittek an outstanding animal advocate, Critter Capers shares with readers many of the adventures and misadventures that he encountered on a day-to-day basis.

Lowell Klessig’s posthumously-released story, infused with reflections by his son Lukas, provides an intimate window into one man’s life in flux with bipolar disorder. As the author narrates a postwar upbringing and describes the manic-depressive travails of developing his identity, he offers us a view into the turmoil of the times – and of his mind. Through mania- and danger-filled months fighting for Civil Rights, protesting the Vietnam War and furthering the Conservation Movement, we see the purpose that sustained him. Through darkened panes, we witness the isolation and malaise of depressive winters that nearly took his life. This masterful chronicle allows us to peer into a restless and kinetic existence in one moment and a chasm of fatigue and hopelessness on the next page. It’s an account that will provide you new perspective. It's a bipolar journey that you won’t ever forget.
