Get the facts but also the human side of the story on the world?s hunger, poverty, material and emotional deprivation; its human rights abuses and unimaginable wealth; the unstoppable rise of consumerism, mental illness, the drugs trade, corruption, gun culture, the abuse of our environment and more. The prognosis might look bleak, yet there is hope, Williams argues, and it's down to us to act now to change things.

In this book, you’ll learn hard facts that will open your eyes and minds to a very different reality than the official versions. Following the popular 50 Facts That Should Change The World, this new book puts our nation under the microscope, telling us that: The United States of America is a country with fifty capital cities, few of which anyone can name/ a nation with 65 million gun owners and 35,000 gun deaths each year/ a place where there’s one car for every adult/ and where twice as many people claim to go to church as actually do.One town in Kentucky elected a black Labrador as its mayor. The United States produces a quarter of global CO2 emissions, and has a population rising twice as fast as that of the European Union.German could have been the national language.Republican states are the most generous givers to charity. The United States boasts the largest welfare state in the world—our military. Stephen Fender presents a vibrant, proud, and yet critical portrait of the world’s most powerful but least understood nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architects, development practitioners and designers are working in a global environment and issues such as environmental and cultural sustainability matter more than ever. Past interactions and interventions between developed and developing countries have often been unequal and inappropriate. We now need to embrace fresh design practices based on respect for diversity and equality, participation and empowerment. This book explores what it means for development activists to practise architecture on a global scale, and provides a blueprint for developing architectural practices based on reciprocal working methods. The content is based on real situations - through extended field research and contacts with architecture schools and architects, as well as participating NGOs. It demonstrates that the ability to produce appropriate and sustainable design is increasingly relevant, whether in the field of disaster relief, longer-term development or wider urban contexts, both in rich countries and poor countries.

Book excerpt: Our world, the planet Earth, needs our help, desperately, if she is to allow the human race to survive and thrive; to reach whatever levels of social, economic, spiritual and intellectual achievement we can attain. We have done a superior job of following God's directive to "go forth and multiply". We have been a great deal less successful in our realization that we are not the earth's owners, merely her stewards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924, an Australian minister observed that while the world may be getting better off, the world is not getting better. Almost one hundred years have passed and little has changed. No doubt people today are healthier and wealthier than ever before. But people do not seem to be any more virtuous. New technologies have changed the way people live, but violence, torture, terrorism, cruelty, deception, dishonesty, and disrespect continue to threaten how well people live. Wayne Allen argues that while humanity may be ailing, it is not beyond treatment and cure. By embracing ten essential principles rooted in the Bible and putting them into practice it is possible to make people better. Allen takes the reader through a tour of the sad state of moral health of humanity and suggests a remedy. With remarkable humor and sharp insight, Allen will bring readers to an appreciation of how the world can be transformed.

Book excerpt: In the past several decades, the issues of women’s ordination and of homosexuality have unleashed intense debates on the nature and mission of the Church, authority and the future of the Anglican Communion. Amid such momentous debates, theological voices of women in the Anglican Communion have not been clearly heard, until now. This book invites the reader to reconsider the theological basis of the Church and its call to mission in the 21st century, paying special attention to the colonial legacy of the Anglican Church and the shift of Christian demographics to the Global South. In addition to essays by the volume editors, this 12-essay collection includes contributions by Jane Shaw, Ellen Wondra and Beverley Haddad, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "About an hour out of Phnom Penh we are transferred onto a mini-bus which takes some time to arrive, but eventually comes. Then driven at breakneck speed on a very dusty road that gets dust all over everything, coming into the city is a bit of a shock as there is no doubt about it that the outer areas do resemble the Third world, but the inner city is clean and modern. We are taken to the King's Hotel where we could choose too stay or go - as I was tired I decided to stay, but without hot water in my cheap room - well what can you expect for 5 dollars. I shared dinner with Isabel and Jeroen - who I took a real shine too. And in the morning I have breakfast with Sarah from Sweden who I had first met in Chau Doc and came on our boat when partly through the trip. Sarah was one of these very assured intelligent young women who had done a lot of travelling as breakfast progressed I kept thinking that her body language was saying categorically too me (was old enough to be her father) or probably any man who may have tried it on with her - that if you mess with me boy I will chew both of your testicles off with one bite. Apparently she was some sort of chemist who new a lot about food and what it does to us, when we eat it. I said very little while eating my breakfast and kept my legs very tightly together".
