Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five years during World War II, Denmark was occupied by Germany. While the Danish reaction to this period of its history has been extensively discussed in Danish-language publications, it has not until now received a thorough treatment in English. Set in the context of modern Danish foreign relations, and tracing the country’s responses to successive crises and wars in the region, Danish Reactions to German Occupation brings a full overview of the occupation to an English-speaking audience. Holbraad carefully dissects the motivations and ideologies driving conduct during the occupation, and his authoritative coverage of the preceding century provides a crucial link to understanding the forces behind Danish foreign policy divisions. Analysing the conduct of a traumatised and strategically exposed small state bordering on an aggressive great power, the book traces a development from reluctant cooperation to active resistance. In doing so, Holbraad surveys and examines the subsequent, and not yet quite finished, debate among Danish historians about this contested period, which takes place between those siding with the resistance and those more inclined to justify limited cooperation with the occupiers – and who sometimes even condone various acts of collaboration.

Book excerpt: I am a direct descendant, of one of the survivors, of the occupation of Denmark. I began to do research on the war after a lifetime of stories from my mother, uncles, aunts, and grandparents that lived to talk about it. I have 8mm movies of Germans in Denmark that my family took, but very few photos. This book is a collection of photos that I found online, and put together for my family. They like books as opposed to the internet, and there are none out there with all these photos for them to see in one book. I purposely left out any photos or stories that would shock you. For example, one story my mother told me, was from an uncle that told her, "One day, a man on a bicycle went rolling by in front of me, and he had no head! We looked everywhere, and couldn't find the poor man's head. No one knew who he was. It was weeks before someone found the missing head on their roof. How did his head come off so fast, that he could still be on the bicycle rolling, and how did his head end up on the roof?" There are other books out there if that's what you're looking for. There are no photos like that in this book, and there are NO pictures of Adolf Hitler. I put a lot of emphasis on the hero of Denmark, the single guiding light throughout the occupation, King Christian X. His Majesty, King Christian X, was seen every day, unguarded, riding his horse, shaking hands with the people, and lifting their spirits. A German soldier once asked, "Where are his bodyguards", and someone replied, "All of Denmark is his bodyguard!" He is seen in photos from every year of the occupation, on horseback, in the crowds. If you haven't been to Denmark, it IS the most beautiful place in the world. My home is in America because I was born in the American military, but Viking blood courses through my veins, and I'm proud of my Danish heritage. This book is for my family, and I hope you enjoy it too.George Holt III

Book excerpt: Hour of Need is a graphic novel telling the true story of the Nazi Resistance in Denmark during World War II and the heroes that saved the Danish Jews by helping them evacuate to Sweden. In the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, legend had it that should danger ever come to Denmark, the mighty warrior Holger Danske promised to wake from his centuries-long slumber to protect its citizens. When the Nazis move to round up young Mette and her fellow Danish Jews in a surprise raid in 1943 after years of letting Denmark rule its people, her father must make life and death decisions to save his family. Overnight, they have become refugees at the mercy of the complete strangers they meet during their escape. The mythical Holger Danske's promise to the Danish people manifests in the compassion and bravery of a school teacher turned resistance leader and other ordinary citizens who bravely defy the Nazi regime to come to her rescue in her hour of need. Told from the point of view of Mette returning to Denmark years later with her grandchildren, Hour of Need tells the story of how the people of an occupied nation--from king to fisherman--risked their lives to evacuate their Jewish countrymen to Sweden in small fishing boats. Hour of Need is a tribute to the heroes that saved the Danish Jews and how humanity triumphs in the darkest hours. Developed in partnership with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Book excerpt: In a book arranged in chapters which deal separately with the Home Fronts of each country, Beck is able to provide a comprehensive picture of the effects of the world's only 'total war' upon the civilians who often faced bewilderment, fear, death, and destruction all around them. Beck considers the effects of bombing and sometimes actual fighting in the streets and towns in which people lived, and the policies of individual governments that attempted to encourage and retain support for the war effort in varying ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A HISTORY OF FIVE YEARS OF SECRET WARFARE AGAINST THE NAZI OCCUPATION Students were the first to resist Entire cities went on strike All the Danish population worked to save their Jewish countrymen V-2 component factories were destroyed in pitched battles General Montgomery described the Danish Resistance as “second to none.” By the end of the war, illegal newspapers had published a total of about 26 million issues; radio guides for Allied aircraft had been set up on the coasts; boats were running timetable services between Britain, Sweden and Denmark; illegal broadcasts were transmitted regularly; German ships were unable to move from Danish harbors; and vast numbers of German troops were kept from the main fighting points by Danish sabotage of the railways and airfields, and of the factories that the Nazis thought would be invulnerable sources of vital air force and military components. It is a fantastic story, full of tales of impudent, almost foolhardy heroism. With every reason to collaborate in safety, the Danes established an international news bureau that provided the Allies with a continuous service of inside information; they shipped seven thousand Jews to safety; they organized strikes; they spirited away most of Denmark’s tug fleet; they even established an office of the British Ministry of Food in Copenhagen. A quarter of a million feet of film recording their activities were shot by the Resistance under the eyes of the Gestapo, including photographs of many of their sabotage raids, which were meticulously planned. To the Danish Resistance the Nazis were not all-conquering supermen but dangerous fools to be parried at every turn. Their story is one of which any nation would be proud. Illustrated with 19 photographs.

Book excerpt: Relates the story of the Salomon family, a Jewish family of Danish-Norwegian background. Focuses on five siblings: Max and his family fled from Oslo to Sweden following the German invasion of Norway in April 1940 and survived. Gerda Weill (née Salomon) and her daughter immigrated to the USA before the war started. Poser's parents - Margaret (Grete) (née Salomon) and Jack - settled in England before the war. Harald and his family were transported from Copenhagen to Sweden during the Danish rescue in October 1943. Alfred survived in Copenhagen. Their mother, Johanna, remained in Oslo, was interned by the Germans, and rescued by her son Harald and the Danish consul in Oslo. The siblings' uncle, Siegmund Salomon, died in Copenhagen in 1943, while his daughter Elly was deported from Norway to Auschwitz in 1942 and perished. Focuses, also, on the history of World War II and the Holocaust in Scandinavia. Shows the ambivalence of Norway and Sweden toward the Jews in 1941 - the former to their citizens, the latter to the refugees. Praises the Danes who rescued their Jewish compatriots. After the war many of the Salomons and their progeny abandoned Judaism.
