A radio transmits and receives electro-magnetic signals through the air. The signals are usually transmitted on high frequency carriers. For example, a t- ical voice signal requires only 30 Kilohertz bandwidth. When it is transmitted by a FM radio station, it is often carried by a frequency in the range of tens of megahertz to hundreds of megahertz. Usually a radio is categorized by its carrier frequency, such as 900 MHz radio or 5 GHz radio. In general, the higher the carrier frequency, the better the directivity, but the more difficult the radio design.

Despite all these efforts, however, none of the existing systems has been successful, mainly due to their low data rates. The increasing demand for WLAN systems that can support data rates in excess of 20 Mb/s enticed the FCC to create an unlicensed national information infrastructure (U–NII) band at 5 GHz. This frequency band provides 300 MHz of spectrum in two segments: a 200 MHz(5.15–5.35 GHz) and a 100 MHz (5.725–5.825 GHz) frequency band. This newly released spectrum, and the fast trend of CMOS scaling, provide an opportunity to design WLAN systems with high data rate and low cost. One of the existing standards at 5 GHz is the European high performance radio LAN (HIPERLAN) standard that supports data rates as high as 20 Mb/s. One of the main building blocks of each wireless system is the f- quency synthesizer. Phase–locked loops (PLLs) are universally used to design radio frequency synthesizers. Reducing the power consumption of the frequency dividers of a PLL has always been a challenge. In this book, we introduce an alternative solution for conventional flipflop based xiv MULTI–GHZ FREQUENCY SYNTHESIS & DIVISION frequency dividers. An injection–locked frequency divider (ILFD) takes advantage of the narrowband nature of the wireless systems and employs resonators to trade off bandwidth for power.

More and more mobile devices rely on this technology to perform data communication with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency band. As the development of CMOS technology is able to keep shrinking chip size and increasing circuit integration density, traditional on-chip passive inductor inefficient area consumption issue is becoming critical to receiver front end system design. In this dissertation, an active inductor-based band pass filter is studied and implemented with 90 nm technology. This active inductor design provides very small area consumption and larger quality factor compared to conventional passive circuit. Moreover, to overcome the process variation issue on active circuit during fabrication, an automatic calibration system is implemented to monitor and compensate the process variation error of band pass filter center frequency at post-fabrication phase. Also, an 802.11ac standard receiver is designed in this dissertation with active filter and Hartley image rejection architecture embedded into the system. The receiver can down-convert a 5.25 GHz signal to a 250 MHz IF signal with input power from -90 dBm to -50 dBm. The area consumption of entire receiver is expected to be smaller compared to other published works.

The reconfigurable dual-band LNA can be tuned to operating fre- quency of either 1.575 GHz for global positioning system (GPS) or 2.4GHz for WLAN 802.11b standards. The simulated results performed power gain of 11.2 dB and 12.4 dB, noise figure of 3.4 dB and 2.9 dB, input return loss(S11) of -25.26 dB and-21.4 dB, third- order input intercept point of -3.12 dBm and -2.137 dBm and the design dissipates 8.9 mW and 4.68 mW of power at 1.2 V power supply at the two frequency bands 1.575 GHz and 2.4 GHz, respectively. A simple but efficient design methodology for a low noise amplifier is also presented in this thesis. This employs a design metric(cut off ’or’ transit frequency, ft) to achieve optimum performance based on quick first order design space exploration. The simulated results for the two designs with input frequency of 2.4 GHz show power gain of 26 dB and 20.3 dB, and noise figure of 1.5 dB dB and 2.48 dB, an input return loss (S11) of -32.57 dB and -26.63 dB and the 1 dB compression point of -3.12 dBm and -2.137 dBm and the design dissipates 6 mW and 600 uW of power at 1.2 V power supply at the higher (24 GHz) and lower (5 GHz) transit frequencies, respectively.
