Book Synopsis Sensory Abilities of Cetaceans by : Jeanette A. Thomas
Download or read book Sensory Abilities of Cetaceans written by Jeanette A. Thomas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evolved through the efforts of several organizations and the dedication of many individuals. In 1987, we received arequest to propose a workshop topic for the Fifth International Theriological Congress (ITC) to be held in August 1989 in Rome, Italy. After looking up the meaning of the word "theriological" in the dictionary and discovering that it pertains to mammalian behavior, we decided a symposium on sensory abilities of whales and dOlphins would be an interesting topic. The ITC convenes only every five years and has the distinction of being very weIl attended by scientists from around the world. We thought that hosting a workshop in conjunction with the ITC would attract a variety of international scientists that rarely have the opportunity to interact. Fortunately for all involved, our prediction was correct. The first two days of the workshop, 23-24 August 1989, were held in conjunction with ITC and the nearly 1,000 attending scientists were able to view our posters and listen to lectures. The third day was limited to only ab out 65 invited scientists who were divided into topical working groups chaired by a rapporteur.

Book Synopsis Binaural and Spatial Hearing in Real and Virtual Environments by : Robert Gilkey
Download or read book Binaural and Spatial Hearing in Real and Virtual Environments written by Robert Gilkey and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current popular and scientific interest in virtual environments has provided a new impetus for investigating binaural and spatial hearing. However, the many intriguing phenomena of spatial hearing have long made it an exciting area of scientific inquiry. Psychophysical and physiological investigations of spatial hearing seem to be converging on common explanations of underlying mechanisms. These understandings have in turn been incorporated into sophisticated yet mathematically tractable models of binaural interaction. Thus, binaural and spatial hearing is one of the few areas in which professionals are soon likely to find adequate physiological explanations of complex psychological phenomena that can be reasonably and usefully approximated by mathematical and physical models. This volume grew out of the Conference on Binaural and Spatial Hearing, a four-day event held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in response to rapid developments in binaural and spatial hearing research and technology. Meant to be more than just a proceedings, it presents chapters that are longer than typical proceedings papers and contain considerably more review material, including extensive bibliographies in many cases. Arranged into topical sections, the chapters represent major thrusts in the recent literature. The authors of the first chapter in each section have been encouraged to take a broad perspective and review the current state of literature. Subsequent chapters in each section tend to be somewhat more narrowly focused, and often emphasize the authors' own work. Thus, each section provides overview, background, and current research on a particular topic. This book is significant in that it reviews the important work during the past 10 to 15 years, and provides greater breadth and depth than most of the previous works.
Book Synopsis Click Models for Web Search by : Aleksandr Chuklin
Download or read book Click Models for Web Search written by Aleksandr Chuklin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of web search in recent years the problem of modeling its users has started to attract more and more attention of the information retrieval community. This has several motivations. By building a model of user behavior we are essentially developing a better understanding of a user, which ultimately helps us to deliver a better search experience. A model of user behavior can also be used as a predictive device for non-observed items such as document relevance, which makes it useful for improving search result ranking. Finally, in many situations experimenting with real users is just infeasible and hence user simulations based on accurate models play an essential role in understanding the implications of algorithmic changes to search engine results or presentation changes to the search engine result page. In this survey we summarize advances in modeling user click behavior on a web search engine result page. We present simple click models as well as more complex models aimed at capturing non-trivial user behavior patterns on modern search engine result pages. We discuss how these models compare to each other, what challenges they have, and what ways there are to address these challenges. We also study the problem of evaluating click models and discuss the main applications of click models.
Book Synopsis Email Marketing, List Building, Traffic and Sales Generation Director by : Brent Westbrook
Download or read book Email Marketing, List Building, Traffic and Sales Generation Director written by Brent Westbrook and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2013-09-07 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For about 4 years my websites had been featured high up among Google's search results – for a lot of highly competitive keywords. To achieve this feat, I had to put in the hours ... thinking back, forget hours, it was more like weeks and months of hard work and effort. The positive was that business was doing well ... I was getting a decent amount of traffic, building a list and generating sales. Then out of the blue, Google attacked. First they closed down my Adwords account. Then they did what they called their 'Panda' update of their algorithm. In an instant, all my sites disappeared from Google ... all that hard SEO work, down the pan. They even closed down my 7 year old blog (I'd made a school boy error in using the Blogger platform which of course Google owned), a blog that was getting on average 950 visits per day. To say I was 'ticked off' is an understatement. In fact, I was very tempted to just 'throw my toys out of the pram' pack it all in! And, it wasn't just me who was greatly affected; thousands of marketers saw the same thing happen to their sites... with some poor souls literally losing everything. To see if there was any hope for my business, I started 'lurking' around the Internet Marketing forums to see how others were coping. Nothing I tried really seemed to replace the traffic that Google brought me. Although, I was interested in a method that a fellow Google 'Panda' victim was using. And so gave it a try. Results were patchy at first, but at least I could see the potential ... Gradually, I tweeked the method, tested different things, changed things about and results started to improve. I stuck with it. And now it's the ONLY traffic driving method I seriously use. Book Synopsis The Grammar of Interactives by : Bernd Heine
Download or read book The Grammar of Interactives written by Bernd Heine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a domain of discourse processing referred to as 'interactive grammar', based on an analysis of grammatical descriptions of over 100 languages spoken across the world. While much previous work has treated interactive grammar as a fairly marginal part of language, Bernd Heine describes it here as a distinct category that contrasts with sentence grammar both in its functions and its structural behavior. He identifies ten types of interactives - i.e. extra-clausal expressions of linguistic discourse: attention signals, directives, discourse markers, evaluatives, ideophones, interjections, response elicitors, response signals, social formulae, and vocatives. The analysis reveals that speakers make use of two contrasting modes for structuring their discourses, both of which are needed for successful communication: one is sentence grammar, which has a propositional format and analytic organization; the other is interactive grammar, which has a holophrastic organization and a focus on social communication. While the argument structure of sentence grammar is shaped by the propositional format of sentences, that of interactive grammar is shaped by the indexical nature of the situation of discourse. This distinction shows interesting correlations both with findings from neurolinguistic studies on differential activity in the two hemispheres of the human brain, and with observations from social psychology on the differences between systems of reasoning and judgment.

Book Synopsis Exterior Ballistics by : George Klimi
Download or read book Exterior Ballistics written by George Klimi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noteworthy findings and innovative methods of predicting projectile trajectory, introduced in my books Exterior Ballistics: A New Approach (EBNA), Xlibris, 2010; and Exterior Ballistics with Applications (EBA3e), Xlibris, third edition, December 2011, require a methodical approach and further development. As result, the amateurs and professionals interested in exterior ballistics of firearms, and especially in long-range shooting with small arms, have a new book, Exterior Ballistics: The Remarkable Methods (EBRM), that aims to enrich the foundations of modern exterior ballistics and to lessen the complexity of physics and mathematics techniques in use. Exterior Ballistics: The Remarkable Methods is a book that combines and develops further the methods introduced in EBA3e, EBNA, and in the Exterior Ballistics of Small Arms (EBSA, Xlibris 2009). The foundations of the book are mainly the findings and the innovative ballistics methods presented in EBA3e and EBNA. The remarkable methods of exterior ballistics presented in this new book include: The methods of determining the function of resistance G(v) of a given bullet (i=1) using range tables, or the experimental data measurements of three or four coordinates at the points of projectile impact. The model of "Tangent Law of Trajectory Refraction" and the related set of formulas that we use to study the trajectories of projectiles in nonstandard atmosphere. Series expansion method and the techniques of (second to sixth order) parabolas we employ to predict with great accuracy the projectile trajectory. The exceptional Siacci's methods that we apply as well for the projectile trajectory in nonstandard atmosphere and in inclined shooting combined with the tangent law of trajectory refraction. It is important to note that using the similarity laws of fluid dynamics we have obtained the "tangent law of projectile refraction," which represents a progress with respect to "Newton Snell's law" on projectile refraction. For better understanding of the information presented in the book, the reader should refer to my three preceding books on exterior ballistics, already published by Xlibris, although most of the material is self-contained and clear enough to be accessed and assimilated by a wide range of readers. The system of units used in the book is the International System (SI). For readers that are unfamiliar with the SI system it is not difficult to become accustomed and use the materials presented in the book to benefit from the simple illustrations, exercises, and PC programs that, at the same time, give answers to many problems encountered in practice. My studies and writing work in exterior ballistics intend to find new and simple mathematical models and methods to predict the elements of the projectile trajectory. I believe that I have achieved some good results, which need to be further developed. George Klimi, PhD New York, December 2012 [email protected][email protected][email protected]

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Language Description by : John Rhoades
Download or read book An Introduction to Language Description written by John Rhoades and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the basic systems of language, and examines how these can be investigated and described. The systems of organizing speech sounds (phonology), meaning (lexical semantics), and grammar (morphology and syntax) are described, along with methods of figuring these out for other languages. The text will foster a deep appreciation in the reader of the fact that language is patterned and that these patterns can be discovered. To this end, problems using actual language data are presented so that the reader can apply the methods described in the book. In a sense, An Introduction to Language Description is a workbook in linguistic analysis where the reader can actually get involved in dealing with language data. Suggested solutions are provided following the exercises. The book has an anthropological outlook with a focus upon usage, not correctness. Further, language structures are not presented as abstract puzzles divorced from actual human speech communication. Throughout each chapter, references are made to humans speaking and choosing among structural elements. This is designed to ground the presentation in the realities of speech; a reality that each reader shares as a language user.
