Book excerpt: For the researchers of rice blast disease and plant blast resistances, IRBC is an important chance to exchange information and discussion on rice blast, which has been a rather minor topic on international plant pathological meetings. Especially for those in Asia, where the blast is one the most important agricultural concerns, IRBC was a unique opportunity to discuss on rice blast with scientists in the West, in where it is achieving the positions of a model pathogen and a model system to study plant microbe interactions. However, I and probably many of Japanese blast researchers have felt an accumulated frustration that, in world plant pathological conferences, the information presented from Asia is only a small fraction although they have much more information that may be valuable for world plant pathologists and resistance researchers. I have noticed also some concept gaps between the researchers in East and West, particularly in the field resistance and the multiline system. There seems to be few who study field resistance and multilines in the West, while in Japan they are expected to become mainstream strategies to suppress the disease. Surely there is a great value in rd having 3 IRBC in Japan for cultivating wider communication between the scientists of the East and West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores not only the formal constraints on the conduct of war throughout Western history but also the unwritten conventions about what is permissible in the course of military operations. Ranging from classical antiquity to the present, eminent historians discuss the legal and cultural regulation of violence in such areas as belligerent rights, the treatment of prisoners and civilians, the observing of truces and immunities, the use of particular weapons, siege warfare, codes of honor, and war crimes. The book begins with a general overview of the subject by Michael Howard. The contributors then discuss the formal and informal constraints on conducting war as they existed in classical antiquity, the age of chivalry, early modern Europe, colonial America, and the age of Napoleon. They also examine how these constraints have been applied to wars at sea, on land, and in the air, planning for nuclear war, and national liberation struggles, in which one of the participants is not an organized state. The book concludes with reflections by Paul Kennedy and George Andreopoulos on the main challenges facing the quest for humanitarian norms in warfare in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxytetracycline (Terramycin) is currently the most widely used antibiotic in fish therapy. A common method of administering oxytetracycline to fish is to mix the antibiotic with feed. For this method to be successful (1) the drug must be uniformly distributed throughout the feed; (2) the drug is present in such quantity that the therapeutic level is available in the quantity of food consumed; (3) the drug is reasonably stable in the finished feed; (4) the feed is palatable to the fish and must be consumed; (5) the feed composition does not affect the availability of the drug; and (6) the drug doesn't leach into the water before the fish consumes the feed. In addition to tissue residue levels, initial results suggested that leaching of antibiotic might deserve further investigation and this investigation was undertaken to determine if significant leaching occurred, and if so, the efforts of selected environmental factors on this phenomenon. This study determines the effects of pellet surface / volume ratio, water temperature, and hydrogen ion concentration of the medium on leaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book that addresses the relations between religion, Protestant missions, and empire building, linking together all three fields of study by taking as its starting point the early eighteenth century Anglican initiatives in colonial North America and the Caribbean. It considers how the early societies of the 1790s built on this inheritance, and extended their own interests to the Pacific, India, the Far East, and Africa. Fluctuations in the vigor and commitment of the missions, changing missionary theologies, and the emergence of alternative missionary strategies, are all examined for their impact on imperial expansion. Other themes include the international character of the missionary movement, Christianity's encounter with Islam, and major figures such as David Livingstone, the state and politics, and humanitarianism, all of which are viewed in a fresh light.
