Current research along this direction has been primarily relying on visual observations. Vision, however useful, has inherent limitations due to occlusions and the 2D-3D ambiguities, especially for perception with a monocular camera. In contrast, touch gets precise local shape information, though its efficiency for reconstructing the entire shape could be low. In this thesis, we propose a novel paradigm that efficiently perceives accurate 3D object shape by incorporating visual and tactile observations, as well as prior knowledge of common object shapes learned from large-scale shape repositories. We use vision first, applying neural networks with learned shape priors to predict an object’s 3D shape from a single-view color image. We then use tactile sensing to refine the shape; the robot actively touches the object regions where the visual prediction has high uncertainty. Our method efficiently builds the 3D shape of common objects from a color image and a small number of tactile explorations (around 10). Our setup is easy to apply and has potentials to help robots better perform grasping or manipulation tasks on real-world objects.

Book excerpt: A substantial number of psychophysical studies have found that the visual perception of 3D shape from stereo is systematically distorted so that the perceived shape is progressively compressed along the depth dimension as the viewing distance increases. This suggests that 3D shape perception depends on the perception of 3D metric structure, which requires the depth magnitude information derived from stereo to reconstruct the local structures, such as angles and line segments. These studies, however, have been criticized by Pizlo (Pizlo, 2008; Pizlo, Li, Sawada, & Steinman, 2014) for using impoverished stimuli that are not sufficiently well-structured to allow the application of powerful regularization constraints such as symmetry, planarity and compactness. His model, which takes these constraints as prior cues and recovers 3D shapes in a holistic way, can reliably reconstruct the shape from a single projection image. In Pizlo's model, the depth order information derived from stereo is the only binocular cue needed to improve the reconstructed shape to a nearly veridical level. The above two theoretical positions differ in many respects and we want to know which one can better account for the mechanism underlying people's 3D shape perception from stereo. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate people's ability to disambiguate 3D shapes defined by binocular disparity within the ambiguity family that formed by stretching a 3D shape in depth (i.e., Z-scale family) using different stimuli and different tasks under different viewing conditions. Although observers were able to make reliable judgments, most of them revealed systematic failures of shape constancy over changes in viewing angles and viewing distances. These findings can be largely accounted for by the misperception of metric structure and cannot be fitted by Pizlo's model. A few observers in Experiment 2, however, produced a different judgment pattern that cannot be explained by the misperception of metric structure and is somewhat aligned with the prediction of Pizlo's theory. The observed dissociation suggests the coexistence of two strategies in 3D shape perception: an analytical strategy based on local metric structure and a holistic strategy based on global configuration.

Though philosophers reacted to the relativism implied by the work of Hanson, Kuhn, and Feyerabend, they concentrated their efforts in dealing with the danger of the incommensurability of theories. They tried to show by philosophical and detailed historical analysis that scientists within different paradigms do communicate with each other and put their respective theories to the empirical test. Curiously enough the same philosophers did not seek to examine the very foundation of the relativistic trend, namely the thesis that perception is cognitively penetrable and theory-laden. In the last decade there has been a keen interest in studying the cognition/perception boundary. However, the discussion focused mainly on the grounding of conceptual content on perception and on the embodiment of cognition. The repercussions of these issues for the problem of the cognitive effects on perception were largely ignored. The chapters in this book address directly the issue of the cognitive penetrability of perception. The volume consists of eleven chapters, each one addressing the issue from a different perspective. Eight of the chapters were written by philosophers and cognitive scientists, and three by psychologists and neuropsychologists. These differences notwithstanding, the chapters share many common themes. The role of attention in perception, the contribution of action to perception, the relation between perception and scientific data, the examination of the content of perception and its nature and the detailed examination of the ways background knowledge affects perception, are among these themes. Most chapters combine philosophical analysis with psychological and/or neuropsychological evidence, which shows that there is consensus as to the kind of approaches that are currently deemed necessary for an adequate examination of the problem.

This dissertation investigates the mechanisms underlying the 3D shape inference from 2D line drawings. Here, four psychophysical experiments and a computational model for the 3D shape inference are discussed. Experiment 1 shows that human responses in depth judgments for line drawings reflect an underlying uncertainty of the perceived 3D shape, which is based on the complex interaction of local and global depth cues propagated from the contours. The computational model estimates the posterior probability of possible 3D surfaces from the contours of a line drawing in a Bayesian framework. The comparison of the model predictions and human depth responses for the line drawings from Experiment 1 demonstrates that the model accounts for the probabilistic 3D shape interpretation of line drawings by human vision. Experiment 2 shows that the reliability of a contour segment in a line drawing as a meaningful depth cue is conditional to the complex global context. Experiments 3 and 4 show that the certainty of depth difference perceptions from partial line drawings increases as more non-local visual cues are available. The experiments and the model offer a new perspective on 3D shape perception from line drawings as an inference based on the probability over possible 3D shapes given the contour cues, providing a broader understanding on the mechanisms of human vision.
