Book excerpt: The use of hand gestures provides an attractive alternative to cumbersome interface devices such as keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc. Hand tracking has a great potential as a tool for better human-computer interaction by means of communication in a more natural and articulate way. This has motivated a very active research area concerned with computer vision-based analysis and interpretation of hand gestures and hand tracking. In this study, a real-time hand tracking system is developed. Mainly, it is image-based hand tracking and based on 2D image information. For separation and identification of finger parts, coloured markers are used. In order to obtain 3D tracking, a stereo vision approach is used where third dimension is obtained by depth information. In order to see results in 3D, a 3D hand model is developed and Java 3D is used as the 3D environment. Tracking is tested on two different types of camera: a cheap USB web camera and Sony FCB-IX47AP camera, connected to the Matrox Meteor frame grabber with a standard Intel Pentium based personal computer. Coding is done by Borland C++ Builder 6.0 and Intel Image Processing and Open Source Computer Vision (OpenCV) library are used as well. For both camera types, tracking is found to be robust and efficient where hand tracking at ~8 fps could be achieved. Although the current progress is encouraging, further theoretical as well as computational advances are needed for this highly complex task of hand tracking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time visual hand tracking is quite different from commonly tracked objects in RGB videos. Because the hand is a biological object and hence suffers from both physical and behavioral variations during its movement. Furthermore, the hand acquires a very small area in the image frame, and due to its erratic pattern of movement, the quality of images in the video is affected considerably, if recorded from a simple RGB camera. In this chapter, we propose a hybrid framework to track the hand movement in RGB video sequences. The framework integrates the unique features of the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) built on Residual Network and Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm. This combination is enriched with the discriminative learning power of deep neural networks and the fast detection capability of hand-crafted features SIFT. Thus, our method online adapts the variations occurring in real-time hand movement and exhibits high efficiency in cognitive recognition of hand trajectory. The empirical results shown in the chapter demonstrate that the approach can withstand the intrinsic as well as extrinsic challenges associated with visual tracking of hand gestures in RGB videos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the fundamentals and recent advances in RGB-D imaging as well as covering a range of RGB-D applications. The topics covered include: data acquisition, data quality assessment, filling holes, 3D reconstruction, SLAM, multiple depth camera systems, segmentation, object detection, salience detection, pose estimation, geometric modelling, fall detection, autonomous driving, motor rehabilitation therapy, people counting and cognitive service robots. The availability of cheap RGB-D sensors has led to an explosion over the last five years in the capture and application of colour plus depth data. The addition of depth data to regular RGB images vastly increases the range of applications, and has resulted in a demand for robust and real-time processing of RGB-D data. There remain many technical challenges, and RGB-D image processing is an ongoing research area. This book covers the full state of the art, and consists of a series of chapters by internationally renowned experts in the field. Each chapter is written so as to provide a detailed overview of that topic. RGB-D Image Analysis and Processing will enable both students and professional developers alike to quickly get up to speed with contemporary techniques, and apply RGB-D imaging in their own projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the literature on hand posture estimation using generative methods, identifying the current gaps, such as sensitivity to hand shapes, sensitivity to a good initial posture, difficult hand posture recovery in cases of loss in tracking, and lack of addressing multiple objectives to maximize accuracy and minimize computational cost. To fill these gaps, it proposes a new 3D hand model that combines the best features of the current 3D hand models in the literature. It also discusses the development of a hand shape optimization technique. To find the global optimum for the single-objective problem formulated, it improves and applies particle swarm optimization (PSO), one of the most highly regarded optimization algorithms and one that is used successfully in both science and industry. After formulating the problem, multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) is employed to estimate the Pareto optimal front as the solution for this bi-objective problem. The book also demonstrates the effectiveness of the improved PSO in hand posture recovery in cases of tracking loss. Lastly, the book examines the formulation of hand posture estimation as a bi-objective problem for the first time. The case studies included feature 50 hand postures extracted from five standard datasets, and were used to benchmark the proposed 3D hand model, hand shape optimization, and hand posture recovery.
