Book excerpt: Daily, we battle with words in which we speak. As a weapon, words can protect us or hinder us. If your tongue shoots out words, then who do you shout at? Moreover, what are your bullet point statements, and where are your bullet point proofs that you claim as fully loaded truths? If each word that shoots from your mouth is a weapon, then what range do you target, and how fast do your words travel? That your tongue is a fire, to whom is your trigger audience? Moreover, if the tongue can cut, then what ÒYoung BloodÓ have you hindered? On the contrary, who have you given a shot for success, with pleasant words of opportunity? The Lord has worked through me to write this Pioneering Publication. There are 38 CAPtivating stories that are TOPped with Biblical versus. ThereÕs a spin to each story, as ""38 RevolversÓ, which will have you view attributes from other angles. I've chosen to write on ""Food For Thoughts"" and ""Play On Words"". Each story will attract to you like a magnet, with plenty of laughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a tour-de-force combination of analytic and computational results clarifying and resolving important questions about the nature of quantum phase transitions in one- and two-dimensional magnetic systems. The author presents a comprehensive study of a low-dimensional spin-half quantum antiferromagnet (the J-Q model) in the presence of a magnetic field in both one and two dimensions, demonstrating the causes of metamagnetism in such systems and providing direct evidence of fractionalized excitations near the deconfined quantum critical point. In addition to describing significant new research results, this thesis also provides the non-expert with a clear understanding of the nature and importance of computational physics and its role in condensed matter physics as well as the nature of phase transitions, both classical and quantum. It also contains an elegant and detailed but accessible summary of the methods used in the thesis—exact diagonalization, Monte Carlo, quantum Monte Carlo and the stochastic series expansion—that will serve as a valuable pedagogical introduction to students beginning in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin glasses exhibit random magnetic ordering as a result of competing interactions such as exchange or anisotropy. While they are easily prepared, and many of their general properties have been described, a detailed understanding of their behaviour is still lacking after more than 30 years of study. This book reviews the progress that has been made over the last five years on several aspects of the spin glass problem. Unlike several recent books, the authors concentrate here on experimental results, limiting the theoretical discussion to efforts most directly related to such work. The field of spin glasses, or more generally random magnets, continues to attract the interest of researchers worldwide, and the contributions in this book clearly show that this will be the case for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concise overview of synthesis and characterization of single molecule magnets Molecular magnetism is explored as an alternative to conventional solid-state magnetism as the basis for ultrahigh-density memory materials with extremely fast processing speeds. In particular single-molecule magnets (SMM) are in the focus of current research, both because of their intrinsic magnetization properties, as well as because of their potential use in molecular spintronic devices. SMMs are fascinating objects on the example of which one can explain many concepts. Single-Molecule Magnets: Molecular Architectures and Building Blocks for Spintronics starts with a general introduction to single-molecule magnets (SMM), which helps readers to understand the evolution of the field and its future. The following chapters deal with the current synthetic methods leading to SMMs, their magnetic properties and their characterization by methods such as high-field electron paramagnetic resonance, paramagnetic nuclear magnetic resonance, and magnetic circular dichroism. The book closes with an overview of radical-bridged SMMs, which have shown application potential as building blocks for high-density memories. Covers a hot topic – single-molecule magnetism is one of the fastest growing research fields in inorganic chemistry and materials science Provides researchers and newcomers to the field with a solid foundation for their further work Single-Molecule Magnets: Molecular Architectures and Building Blocks for Spintronics will appeal to inorganic chemists, materials scientists, molecular physicists, and electronics engineers interested in the rapidly growing field of study.

It is written as an intro duction to the field, for nonexperts. We present here a simple exposition of certain aspects of MRI that are important to understand to use this valuable diagnostic tool intelligently in a clinical setting. The basic principles are presented nonmathematically, using no equations and a minimum of symbols and abbreviations. For those requiring a deeper understanding of MRI, this book will help facilitate the transition to standard texts. Chapters 1 through 4 provide a general introduction to the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance and how it is used in imaging. Chapter 1 discus ses magnetic resonance, using a compass needle as an example. In Chapter 2, the transition to the magnetic resonance of the atomic nucleus is made. Chapter 3 describes the principles of imaging. In Chapter 4, the terms T 1 and T 2 are described and their relationship to tissue characterization; the fun damental role of thermal magnetic noise in T 1 and T 2 is discussed.
