Book excerpt: Snapshots of Christ in Sermons: Generally speaking, a book of sermons holds little value to the busy pastor. I have many such books in my library, yet few of these books hold any great insights. I present these sermons to be different from what you have seen before. Of the thousands of times I have preached, some were so different that they could not be of the same level, so I separated them over the years. I do not mean they were the most exciting to hear, I mean that they were the most profound as to the scripture of truth. I was often stunned by the truth that I had stumbled upon. I present them to you, hoping that you, too, can see what I saw and convey that truth to your hearers. The result will be a gasp from your congregation and a joy in your spirit that you had given something that your people would not soon forget. This collection of sermons are some of what I call the greatest I have ever preached out of 7500, these are the first 52 that made me stop and look again at what I had found. May you do so as well. You can add to them insights from your own experience and studies and make them yours. I would ask of you that use them this one thing: do not give me credit for having wrote them because in truth, I have received so much if not all I preach from those that I listened to and read over the years. I cannot remember all the names of those that I owe so much. In truth, maybe I did not receive one thing on my own. You must judge them for yourselves.

Book Synopsis Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by : John Berendt
Download or read book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil written by John Berendt and published by Random House. This book was released on 1994-01-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Download or read book Hope for Troubled Times written by Mark Finley and published by Review and Herald Pub Assoc. This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear Worry Stress These emotions can overwhelm and consume us. They fill our minds with unanswerable questions. What will I lose…my health? my family? my job? my home? Will our lives ever be normal again? What is “normal”? We live in a sin-sick world. Catastrophes surround us, but we can surrender our fears to Jesus. He is the answer to overwhelming fears that consume our energy, rob our joy, and ruin our health. Fear is an emotion. Faith is an attitude, and focus is a choice. Fear must give way to faith as we adjust our focus. If our eyes are focused on the problem, fear will overcome us. If our eyes are fixed upon Jesus, the emotion of fear may still be present, but it will not cripple us. Fear will no longer dominate our lives. Discover with Pastor Mark Finley as he shows us that we have One who is larger than our fears, bigger than our worries, and greater than our anxieties by our side, and He has practical, down-to-earth, real solutions to our problems. We have the assurance of the One who said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

Book Synopsis The Sword of Judith by : Kevin R. Brine
Download or read book The Sword of Judith written by Kevin R. Brine and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Judith tells the story of a fictitious Jewish woman beheading the general of the most powerful imaginable army to free her people. The parabolic story was set as an example of how God will help the righteous. Judith's heroic action not only became a validating charter myth of Judaism itself but has also been appropriated by many Christian and secular groupings, and has been an inspiration for numerous literary texts and works of art. It continues to exercise its power over artists, authors and academics and is becoming a major field of research in its own right. The Sword of Judith is the first multidisciplinary collection of essays to discuss representations of Judith throughout the centuries. It transforms our understanding across a wide range of disciplines. The collection includes new archival source studies, the translation of unpublished manuscripts, the translation of texts unavailable in English, and Judith images and music.
