Download or read book Latino America written by Matt Barreto and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime in April 2014, somewhere in a hospital in California, a Latino child tipped the demographic scales as Latinos displaced non-Hispanic whites as the largest racial/ethnic group in the state. So, one-hundred-sixty-six years after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought the Mexican province of Alta California into the United States, Latinos once again became the largest population in the state. Surprised? Texas will make the same transition sometime before 2020. When that happens, America's two most populous states, carrying the largest number of Electoral College votes, will be Latino. New Mexico is already there. New York, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada are shifting rapidly. Latino populations since 2000 have doubled in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Dakota. The US is undergoing a substantial and irreversible shift in its identity. So, too, are the Latinos who make up these populations. Matt Barreto and Gary M. Segura are the country's preeminent experts in the shape, disposition, and mood of Latino America. They show the extent to which Latinos have already transformed the US politically and socially, and how Latino Americans are the most buoyant and dynamic ethnic and racial group, often in quite counterintuitive ways. Latinos' optimism, strength of family, belief in the constructive role of government, and resilience have the imminent potential to reshape the political and partisan landscape for a generation and drive the outcome of elections as soon as 2016.
Book Synopsis Murder State by : Brendan C. Lindsay
Download or read book Murder State written by Brendan C. Lindsay and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Euro-American citizenry of California carried out mass genocide against the Native population of their state, using the processes and mechanisms of democracy to secure land and resources for themselves and their private interests. The murder, rape, and enslavement of thousands of Native people were legitimized by notions of democracy—in this case mob rule—through a discreetly organized and brutally effective series of petitions, referenda, town hall meetings, and votes at every level of California government. Murder State is a comprehensive examination of these events and their early legacy. Preconceptions about Native Americans as shaped by the popular press and by immigrants’ experiences on the overland trail to California were used to further justify the elimination of Native people in the newcomers’ quest for land. The allegedly “violent nature” of Native people was often merely their reaction to the atrocities committed against them as they were driven from their ancestral lands and alienated from their traditional resources. In this narrative history employing numerous primary sources and the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on genocide, Brendan C. Lindsay examines the darker side of California history, one that is rarely studied in detail, and the motives of both Native Americans and Euro-Americans at the time. Murder State calls attention to the misuse of democracy to justify and commit genocide.
Book Synopsis Exterminate Them by : Clifford E. Trafzer
Download or read book Exterminate Them written by Clifford E. Trafzer and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 1999-01-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular media depict miners as a rough-and-tumble lot who diligently worked the placers along scenic rushing rivers while living in roaring mining camps in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Trafzer and Hyer destroy this mythic image by offering a collection of original newspaper articles that describe in detail the murder, rape, and enslavement perpetrated by those who participated in the infamous gold rush. "It is a mercy to the Red Devils," wrote an editor of the Chico Courier, "to exterminate them." Newspaper accounts of the era depict both the barbarity and the nobility in human nature, but while some protested the inhumane treatment of Native Americans, they were not able to end the violence. Native Americans fought back, resisting the invasion, but they could not stop the tide of white miners and settlers. They became "strangers in a stolen land."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were seven flags over Texas. The green flagit is the first flag of Texas independence. It is the spark that lit the revolt for liberty in our state. It started as a gentle glow of a peasants lantern. Then, it expanded to a beacons potent light; beckoning Don Bernardo led his army in answering the call for freedom. It was not a flag of conquest, but a flag of self-rule. It was not a flag to build an empire, but to end an unjust one. It was a precious flag, wrapping those who carried it with the ideals of equality. It was the first breath of a new life, the first step of a long journey, the sign of a new beginning. It is the green flag, the first flag of Texas independence.
Download or read book The Man who Took Trips written by Roy Ald and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When the author began the research for this book he was not prepared to believe Paul. He thought of his subject as an entertaining and brilliant kook. But as Paul reveals his strange and exotic story, the author realizes that he has met an extraordinary man, that the X-ian world Paul swears he was a part of has taken on the dimension of true reality. Paul's affair with the beautiful X-ian creature, Alotha, is a deeply moving one that develops into a relationship of incomparabile tenderness. Paul's other-worldly experiences are cataclysmic; he manages to keep his sanity through psychological tremors that would have sunk any other man. However, much more is at stake here than a trip into outer space. In many ways Paul's highly readable, fantastic adventure story is a philosophical document that confronts some of the key dilemmas of our time. As we look at the advanced civilization of the X-ians, we learn the truth about our human nature; we see man as an animal that builds civilizations and destroys them, and we are fnally given a special insight into the current lamentable 'human condition.'"--dust jacket.
Download or read book The God Within written by Elwood Babbitt and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook for Spiritual Growth In 1970 Charles Hapgood asked Elwood Babbitt, a full trance medium, to contact the Hindu deity, Vishnu. At that time he believed that Vishnu was one of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva, which corresponded in ancient philosophy to the earth's seasons of Spring, Summer and Fall. When this request was made of Elwood Babbitt's chief assistant in spirit, Dr. Frederick Fischer, Fischer said Hapgood was asking for the All-In-All. Hapgood found, on investigation, that the highest thought of India was indeed monotheistic, that Vishnu was accepted as the One, the Universal Spirit, of which Brahma and Siva were aspects. Fischer said that bringing in the total Force of the universe to express through the body of a medium had never been done before, but he thought it could be done, and he accomplished it, but not without mortal danger to the medium. Exposed to too great an energy Babbitt became very ill and for several weeks it seemed he was unlikely to survive. Fischer, however, managed to moderate the vibrational force so that the transmissions could continue. Hapgood interrogated Vishnu, attempting to cover as wide an area as possible to answer questions in the minds of people. Tape recordings were made and these will be available to the public in due course. After the recordings were transcribed Hapgood edited the texts to clarify any expressions that were confused owing to minor distortions of language because of distortions of the vibrations coming through Babbitt's brain. The result is a comprehensive and clear work, avoiding technicalities of philosophy or dogma, and concentrating on the problem of assisting all those who wish to devote themselves to the path of spiritual growth.
Book Synopsis Inside the Space Ships by : George Adamski
Download or read book Inside the Space Ships written by George Adamski and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has happened to George Adamski since he wrote the famous incidents in Flying Saucers Have Landed? Since the memorable November 20, 1952, when he first made personal contact with a man from another world? Since December 13, 1952 when he was able to make photographs within 100 feet of the same saucer that had brought his original visitor? Inside The Space Ships is Adamski’s own story of what has happened to him since then. It begins with his first meeting, a few months later, with a second man from another world—his first meeting with one who speaks to him. This second visitor brings him to a Venusian Scout (flying saucer) and this, in turn, brings him to a mother ship. Later lie is conveyed in both a Saturnian Scout and a Saturnian mother ship. Adamski tells us what transpires in these space craft and what the men and women from other worlds have told him. Adamski’s photographs of flying saucers, originally published in Flying Saucers Have Landed, have since become world-famous as other witnesses in other parts of the world have succeeded in taking photographs identical with his. Now, however, in Inside The Space Ships, Adamski gives us 16 photographs and illustrations, no longer of Scouts (flying saucers) mostly, but of the great space ships from which they are launched. The main group of these photographs was taken in April, 1955, and neither the photographs nor a description of them has ever been published before.

Book Synopsis Call It Conspiracy by : Larry Abraham
Download or read book Call It Conspiracy written by Larry Abraham and published by Dauphin Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story you are about to read is true. The names have not been changed to protect the guilty. This book may have the effect of changing your life. After reading this book, you will never look at national and world events in the same way again. Call It Conspiracy will be a very controversial book. At first it will receive little publicity and those whose plans are exposed in it will try to kill it by the silent treatment. For reasons that become obvious as you read this book, it will not be reviewed in all the "proper" places or be available on your local bookstand. However, there is nothing these people can do to stop a grassroots book distributing system. Eventually it will be necessary for the people and organizations named in this book to try to blunt its effect by attacking it or the author. They have a tremendous vested interest in keeping you from discovering what they are doing. And they have the big guns of the mass media at their disposal to fire the barrages at Call It Conspiracy. By sheer volume, the "experts" will try to ridicule you out of investigating for yourself as to whether or not the information in this book is true. They will ignore the fact that the author admits that some of his ideas are about to conjecture because the people who know the truth are not about to confess. They will find a typographical error or argue some point that is open to debate. If necessary, they will lie in order to protect themselves by smearing this book. Psychologically many people would prefer to believe those who pooh-pooh the information herein because we all like to ignore bad news. We do so at our own peril! In this edition, Larry Abraham has at last revised, None Dare Call It Conspiracy, and brought it up to date. The events of the last fifteen years have served Larry's thesis quite well. As far as Larry is concerned, the history of 1970-85 has been a kind of giant grab-bag of goodies that reinforce his original thesis. The arguments for the existence of a conspiracy are stronger today than they have ever been, especially when we lay them alongside of what was said and written before. Therefore, chapters one through seven are going to remain the same as in the original book, None Dare Call It Conspiracy. The bracketed updates are new, and so are chapters eight through thirteen, plus the various appendices.
