This book was released on 2008-09-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Bioinformatics in recent years has been prompted by research in mole- lar biology and medicine in initiatives like the human genome project. The volume and diversification of data has increased so much that it is very hard if not impossible to analyze it by human experts. The analysis of this growing body of data, intensified by the development of a number of high-throughput experimental techniques that are generating the so called 'omics' data, has prompted for new computational methods. New global approaches, such as Systems Biology, have been emerging replacing the reductionist view that dominated biology research in the last decades, requiring the coordinated efforts of biological researchers with those related to data analysis, mathematical modelling and computer science. Computational methods have been helping in tasks related to knowledge discovery, modelling and optimization tasks. This workshop brings the opportunity to discuss applications of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology exploring the interactions between computer scientists, bio- gists and other scientific researchers. The IWPACBB technical program includes 29 papers (23 long papers and 6 short papers) selected from a submission pool of 51 papers, from 9 different countries. We thank the excellent work of the local organization members and also from the members of the Program Committee for their excellent reviewing work. October 2008 Juan M. Corchado Juan F. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research scenario in advanced systems for protecting critical infrastructures and for deeply networked information tools highlights a growing link between security issues and the need for intelligent processing abilities in the area of information s- tems. To face the ever-evolving nature of cyber-threats, monitoring systems must have adaptive capabilities for continuous adjustment and timely, effective response to modifications in the environment. Moreover, the risks of improper access pose the need for advanced identification methods, including protocols to enforce comput- security policies and biometry-related technologies for physical authentication. C- putational Intelligence methods offer a wide variety of approaches that can be fruitful in those areas, and can play a crucial role in the adaptive process by their ability to learn empirically and adapt a system’s behaviour accordingly. The International Workshop on Computational Intelligence for Security in Inf- mation Systems (CISIS) proposes a meeting ground to the various communities - volved in building intelligent systems for security, namely: information security, data mining, adaptive learning methods and soft computing among others. The main goal is to allow experts and researchers to assess the benefits of learning methods in the data-mining area for information-security applications. The Workshop offers the opportunity to interact with the leading industries actively involved in the critical area of security, and have a picture of the current solutions adopted in practical domains. This volume of Advances in Soft Computing contains accepted papers presented at CISIS’08, which was held in Genova, Italy, on October 23rd–24th, 2008.

Book excerpt: For the last decades, as the computer technology has been developing, the importance of human-computer systems interaction problems was growing. This is not only because the computer systems performance characteristics have been im-proved but also due to the growing number of computer users and of their expectations about general computer systems capabilities as universal tools for human work and life facilitation. The early technological problems of man-computer information exchange – which led to a progress in computer programming languages and input/output devices construction – have been step by step dominated by the more general ones of human interaction with-and-through computer systems, shortly denoted as H-CSI problems. The interest of scientists and of any sort specialists to the H-CSI problems is very high as it follows from an increasing number of scientific conferences and publications devoted to these topics. The present book contains selected papers concerning various aspects of H-CSI. They have been grouped into five Parts: I. General H-CSI problems (7 papers), II. Disabled persons helping and medical H-CSI applications (9 papers), III. Psychological and linguistic H-CSI aspects (9 papers), IV. Robots and training systems (8 papers), V. Various H-CSI applications (11 papers).

Book excerpt: The Symposium on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAmI) began as a workshop held in 2003 in San Sebastián (Spain) under the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Conference. This event gathered 32 attendees and 18 papers were p- sented. The second edition, already as a Symposium, took place in Granada (Spain) under the first Spanish Computer Science Conference (CEDI). Later, in 2006, a s- ond workshop was celebrated in Ciudad Real and, in 2007; the second Symposium was organized in Zaragoza by the CEDI conference. Now we continue to work on the organization of this event in Salamanca, a beautiful Spanish city. The European Community and the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programs - courage researchers to explore the generic scope of the AmI vision. In fact, some researchers have a crucial role in this vision. Emile Aarts from Philips describes - bient Intelligence as "the integration of technology into our environment, so that p- ple can freely and interactively utilize it". This idea agrees with the proposal of Mark Weiser regarding the Ubiquitous Computing paradigm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology have been growing steadily over the last few years boosted by an increasing need for computational techniques that can efficiently handle the huge amounts of data produced by the new experimental techniques in Biology. This calls for new algorithms and - proaches from fields such as Data Integration, Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Also, new global approaches, such as Systems Biology, have been emerging replacing the reductionist view that dominated biological research in the last d- ades. Indeed, Biology is more and more a science of information needing tools from the information technology field. The interaction of researchers from diff- ent scientific fields is, more than ever, of foremost importance and we hope this event will contribute to this effort. IWPACBB'10 technical program included a total of 30 papers (26 long papers and 4 short papers) spanning many different sub-fields in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Therefore, the technical program of the conference will certainly be diverse, challenging and will promote the interaction among computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists and other researchers. We would like to thank all the contributing authors, as well as the members of the Program Committee and the Organizing Committee for their hard and highly valuable work. Their work has helped to contribute to the success of the IWAPCBB’10 event. IWPACBB’10 wouldn’t exist without your contribution.
