Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 25th Division (74th, 75th and 76th Brigades) was formed in September 1914, one of Kitchener's Third New Army divisions, under the command of Major-General F.Ventris (late Essex), who had retired some five years earlier. He was replaced at the end of May 1915 by B.J.C Doran (late R Irish Regt), a regular, promoted from command of the 68th Brigade; prior to that he had commanded the 8th Infantry Brigade in France during the first two months of the war. The division went to France in September 1915 and a month later the 76th Brigade was transferred to the 3rd Division in exchange for the 7th Brigade. For the next six months or so the division was in the ‘Plugstreet'/Armentieres sector before moving down to Vimy Ridge in May 1916, where it was awarded the first of the six VCs it was to win by the end of the war. Command changed again in June when E.G.T Bainbridge replaced Doran who was sent back to command a district in Ireland. Thereafter the division fought on the Somme, at Messines, Third Ypres, in the German offensive of March/April 1918 and finally on the Aisne in May 1918, with IX Corps under French command. When the division was taken out of the line in mid-June it had, since February, suffered losses of some 15,500 of whom 7,500 were missing. At this point the divisional and brigade HQs and the infantry battalions were sent back to England where the division was reconstituted; it returned to France in September with another commander, J.R.E Charles, who had taken over in August. This is reflected in the divisional history which is divided into two parts, Part I is concerned with the original division, Part II with the reborn division. Kincaid-Smith’s work is unlike any other Great War divisional history in that nearly half the book is taken up with citations (over 300 of them), lists of honours and awards, tables of casualties and details of officer casualties. As he says in his introduction, he sets out to give a very brief sketch of the operations in which the 25th Division was engaged from time to time, so this is not a continuous narrative. Beginning with the Somme he devotes a chapter to each of the major operations involving the division, each chapter followed by the honours and awards gained plus selected citations; usually, such details appear in appendices. From time to time casualties suffered by the division over a given period are summarised in tables that give the figures for every unit; each of these tables (there are four of them) is followed by the names of the officer casualties (killed, wounded and missing), listed by units; individual dates are not given. By the end of the war the division’s losses amounted to 48,289 of whom 623 Officers and 12,663 Other Ranks made the supreme sacrifice.

Book excerpt: An examination of the first major American assault during World War I. At 1:00 am on September 12, 1918, accompanied by rain and lightning, the American Army launched its first major offensive of World War I. Supported by French Colonial troops, the American IV and V Corps burst through the weakened German line at St. Mihiel and seized numerous objectives while taking over 16,000 prisoners and capturing over 400 guns. Although American tactics remain suspect, and the operation cost 7,000 US casualties, the battle was heralded as a huge Allied victory. More importantly, it demonstrated to the French and British that the Americans were capable of large-scale, combined-arms operations. Packed with photos, artwork and battle maps, this book explains the entire offensive in detail.

Book excerpt: Set out topographically, it covers everything from the famous battle sites of High Wood and Mametz Wood to obscure villages on the outlying flanks. The British first began to take the Somme sector over from the French Army in June 1915. From this time onwards they built up a very close bond with the local population, many of whom continued to live in local villages close to the front line. The author draws on the latest research and analysis, as well as the testimony of those who took part, to present all aspects of a battle that was to become a symbol of the horrors of the Great War.

Book excerpt: Formed at the beginning of World War II, the 101st Airborne Division has fought in almost every major conflict since then, including Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Going from a parachute and glider infantry in its early days to an air assault division in our own--the only one in the world--the "Screaming Eagles" are trained to destroy enemy forces while seizing land and resources. They are a rapid deployment group prepared to go anywhere in the world within thirty-six hours. And, for good reason, they are probably the best-known army division in the world. In this book, top military photographer and former U.S. Army Ranger Russ Bryant takes you inside the 101st Airborne. In training and in action, on land and in the air: Here are the Screaming Eagles as youve never seen them, in a close-up, multi-faceted portrait of courage and skill as a fact of everyday life. The book brilliantly illustrates why the 101st Airborne is the vanguard in its field--and in the world.

Book excerpt: I often imagine what it would have been like to be able to have served in the Navy during World War II instead of serving when I did. I have to think that it was a tough time for all but especially the civilians who had to deal with rationing and watching every move they made due to security risks. The part that I would have liked is the music of the era and going to all the live bands that used to play during that time, like Glenn Miller, Louis Jordan, and Benny Goodman. The sailors of that time saw ports of call that are restricted to history books now like Shanghai, Athens, Malta, and Marseille. I also would have liked to wear my uniform all the time like they used to; unlike now where civilian clothes are authorized all the time. It just feels like there was something special about that time while in the military and maybe it was because there was a different kind of war on. The war back then was embraced by all in one way or another; whether you liked it or not, you still supported it. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a different period of time? Open the pages of this book and see if you don't just go back to a different time. Take a journey as far back as the Dunmore War's of 1774, before there was a United States, and see if you can put yourself there. The nice thing about this book is that you have over 230 years to pick from. Just be careful what period you pick from or who you think you'd like to be; not everybody returns.
