Book Synopsis Selling Happiness by : Ellen Johnston Laing
Download or read book Selling Happiness written by Ellen Johnston Laing and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early twentieth century until the Communist takeover in 1949, Shanghai commercial artists created thousands of colorful posters and black and white advertisements that formed an essential part of modern life in the city. This visually appealing and richly illustrated work describes the origin and evolution of modern commercial art in China, focusing on colorful advertisement calendar posters that featured distinctive feminine images. It makes clear how essential commercial art and its institutional backing were to the development of modern art and even modern society in China over the past century. Selling Happiness discusses not only advertising art but also the production and marketing of the calendar poster. These posters, like other advertisements, were rendered in a Western realistic technique and were wildly and widely popular. Ordinary people throughout China often acquired them to decorate their homes. Laing outlines how the Chinese commercial artist, who rarely attended formal Western art classes, gained skills in Western representational art. In the final chapter of the book, she explains how the styles developed by the commercial poster artists during the 1920s and 1930s became the basis for certain types of propaganda art under the Chinese Communists in the 1950s and 1960s.
Book Synopsis Cultural Calendar of the 20th Century by : Edward Lucie-Smith
Download or read book Cultural Calendar of the 20th Century written by Edward Lucie-Smith and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The extraordinary pace of events in the twentieth century has been contusing as well as exciting. This is particularly so in the arts, where even the accepted definition of a work of art has often broken down completely, while the numerous styles and "isms" in literature, drama, music, the visual arts, cinema and other disciplines have been invented and discarded in quick succession. This book is a chronology of change: it sets the immense variety of twentieth-century cultural activity, year by year, against the background of world events. It does so not only through a succinct and authoritative narrative, but also by taking each year in turn and presenting a list of the major works in each art form created during that year. This is set against a concurrent general events of political, social or cultural significance. Each year is also individually illustrated, the pictures having been carefully selected so that they evoke the styles and contrasts of the time."--book jacket.

Download or read book On Line written by Cornelia H. Butler and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century explores the radical transformation of drawing that began during the last century as numerous artists critically re-examined the traditional concepts of the medium. In a revolutionary departure from the institutional definition of drawing and from reliance on paper as the fundamental support material, artists instead pushed the line into real space, expanding the medium's relationship to gesture and form and connecting it with painting, sculpture, photography, film and dance. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, On Line presents a discursive history of mark-making through nearly 250 works by 100 artists, including Aleksandr Rodchenko, Alexander Calder, Karel Malich, Eva Hesse, Anna Maria Maiolino, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum and Monika Grzymala, among many others. Essays by the curators illuminate individual practices and examine broader themes, such as the exploration of the line by the avant-garde and the relationship between drawing and dance.

Book Synopsis Art of the 20th Century by : Karl Ruhrberg
Download or read book Art of the 20th Century written by Karl Ruhrberg and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2000 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original edition of this ambitious reference was published in hardcover in 1998, in two oversize volumes (10x13"). This edition combines the two volumes into one; it's paperbound ("flexi-cover"--the paper has a plastic coating), smaller (8x10", and affordable for art book buyers with shallower pockets--none of whom should pass it by. The scope is encyclopedic: half the work (originally the first volume) is devoted to painting; the other half to sculpture, new media, and photography. Chapters are arranged thematically, and each page displays several examples (in color) of work under discussion. The final section, a lexicon of artists, includes a small bandw photo of each artist, as well as biographical information and details of work, writings, and exhibitions. Ruhrberg and the three other authors are veteran art historians, curators, and writers, as is editor Walther. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book 20th Century Korean Art written by 김영나 and published by Laurence King Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the increase in interest in Asian art has led to a number of books being published about Japanese and Chinese artists. However, the exciting Korean scene is still largely undocumented. Now Kim YoungNa reveals Korean modern and contemporary artists to the West. Twentieth-Century Korean Art provides a comprehensive, engaging survey that places emphasis on art historical narratives. It draws on primary sources and historical artefacts as well as on new interpretations of issues such as the identity of Korean art and the cultural ramifications of Japanese colonialism. Covering over one hundred year from the late 19th century through to the 1990s, the essays in this book examine how both external influences and wills-to-change within Korean society itself generated an artistic vitality against a shifting political, social, and cultural backdrop and how this necessarily involved East Asia at large and the West.
