Book excerpt: Ever since the invention of the cesium atomic clock in 1955, quantum frequency standards have seen considerable development over the decades, as a representative of quantum precision measurement. The progress in frequency measurements achieved in the past allowed one to perform quantum precision measurements of other physical and technical quantities with unprecedented precision, whenever they could be traced back to a frequency measurement. Using atomic transitions as frequency reference, quantum frequency standards are far less susceptible to external perturbations, and the identity of microscopic particles allows easy replication of a quantum standard with the same frequency. With laser cooling and trapping, cold atomic ensembles eliminate Doppler shift broadening, and have become the go-to quantum reference when precision and new physics are pursued. The advancement of laser cooling and cold atom physics, in addition to novel physical matter states such as Bose-Einstein Condensation, give rise to new experimental techniques in quantum precision measurement, especially quantum frequency standards, such as cesium fountain clocks dictating the SI second, as well as optical lattice clocks and single-ion optical clocks pushing the frontier of quantum metrology. Other areas of quantum metrology, such as gravitometers and magnetometers, also benefit greatly from cold atoms. For practical applications, quantum frequency standards are usually required to be compact and portable, and thermal atoms in the form of atomic beams or vapor cells are utilized. Commercially available quantum frequency standards such as cesium beam clocks or rubidium clocks have become the cornerstone of navigation and timekeeping. Compact optical clocks based on various laser spectroscopic techniques have also been developed. As researchers strive to break through the limits of accurate quantum measurement and atomic temperature, new fields such as precise measurement, quantum computing and quantum simulation based on cold atoms are further opened up, and challenges still exist to explore new physical phenomena in the field of cold atoms. In honor of Prof. Yiqiu Wang on the occasion of his 90th birthday, the main goal of this Research Topic is to provide a platform to exhibit the recent achievements and reveal the future challenges in quantum precision measurement, as well as studies of cold atom physics with quantum metrology, closely related to the long-term scientific research areas of Prof. Yiqiu Wang. Both Original Research and Review articles are encouraged. The contemporary practice of this empirical law can be considered as happening within a space-dominant paradigm. An alternative of exploiting potential in the dimension of time is identified as an emerging paradigm in microelectronics. The new practice is termed a time-oriented paradigm. It is justified as the turn of Moore’s Law from space to time. The resultant Time-Moore strategy is envisioned as the next-generation enabler for continuing Moore’s Law’s pursuit of everhigher information processing power and efficiency. It also serves as the perpetuation of the spirit that Moore’s law is nothing but a collective storied history of innovations. In the first part of this book, by following Thomas Kuhn’s seminal work around the concepts of paradigm and scientific revolution, the argument for the Time-Moore strategy (Time-Moore: to use time more) and the paradigm shift from space to time is carried out heavily through philosophical persuasion rather than technical proof due to the difficult challenge of change-of-mindset. The second part of the book provides solid technical materials for supporting this transition from the old paradigm to the new one. In short, the goal of this book is to reevaluate the contemporary practice of microelectronics, identify the cause of the current crisis, advocate a change-of-mindset to circumvent the crisis, and ultimately point out a new route for advancing. Book excerpt: This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.
