Imagine yourself discovering unique exciting places accessible only in your boat. One last tidbit: You are invited to visit our web site www.sailingthesanjuans.com where you will find all the information contained in the cruise guide, but not near as orderly. News Flash! - Last 4th of July (2016) I was lounging on the finger dock next to my boat at Friday Harbor when a fellow boater approached me. He said, "I recognize - Kraken (Kraken's on the back cover)- I bought your book, and use it as one of my resources." We had a long enjoyable talk. He said he drove from Redding Ca. and taking my advice put in at Squalicum Harbor. Meeting a happy camper, made my day. Thanks! John News Flash! - (Dec 2016) We will have a new travel guide to the San Juans out soon. The new guide will be a "Land and Sea" guide and will be for all travelers. The original "San Juan Islands Cruise Guide" is still your detailed boaters bible to the Marine Parks. The new guide is titled "San Juan Islands Travel Guide." It includes shore attractions, e.g. resorts, campgrounds, villages, parks, and lots of local community knowledge to assist your bicycling excursions, kayaking paddles, hiking and overall visit. The new guide is a companion resource to our cruise guide - not a replacement. Boat travelers to the San Juans should own and carry both. Book Synopsis A Detective's Triumphs by : Dick Donovan
Download or read book A Detective's Triumphs written by Dick Donovan and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dick Donovan” was the pseudonym of James Edward Preston Murdock (1843–1934), an author of mysteries, thrillers, and horror stories. For a time, his popularity rivaled that of Arthur Conan Doyle—and he was certainly more prolific than Doyle. Between 1889 and 1922, he published nearly 300 mystery stories (many in series that were collected as books, such as this one.) Many of Muddock’s mystery stories feature the character Dick Donovan, a Glasgow Detective, named for one of the 18th Century Bow Street Runners. The character was so popular that later stories were published under this pen name. Muddock also wrote true crime stories, horror, and 37 novels, most as “Dick Donovan.” His non-fiction included four history books, seven guidebooks for areas in the Alps and his autobiography. His stories were used by The Strand magazine in months when there were no Sherlock Holmes stories available.

Book excerpt: Mountains appear in the oldest known maps yet their representation has proven a notoriously difficult challenge for map makers. In this essay, Ernesto Capello surveys the broad history of relief representation in cartography with an emphasis on the allegorical, commercial and political uses of mapping mountains. After an initial overview and critique of the traditional historiography and development of techniques of relief representation, the essay features four clusters of mountain mapping emphases. These include visions of mountains as paradise, the mountain as site of colonial and postcolonial encounter, the development of elevation profiles and panoramas, and mountains as mass-marketed touristed itineraries.
