Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book excerpt: The computer revolution over the past 10-15 years in our country has feed to the permanent dependence of all fields of human activity, on computer technology. Based on my experience as a plan examines for all building documentations, I find that is necessary a reform and improvement of the plan examination and approval process, in all boroughs of this big city of N.Y. Because the architects and engineers have the best knowledge of their documentations, I have realized that their help is the most necessary to the real improvement of the verification process. We have to help them in this hypothesis, I considered necessary to create a DATA BASE of guidelines realized for different building types, which will be a computerized flexible tool for all review and approved process, which can be updated all the time in the future, by adding new guidelines to the existing ones, with the new and specific requirements regarding new zoning resolutions, new code articles, new memorandums and criteria’s issued by the city department for the best development of this great city. This was the fundamental idea for the creation a DATA BASE of guidelines, which will help from the beginning of the process of creation of technical documentations, and after, in the long process of verification and approval, for the execution of buildings in the city. Certainly this collection of guidelines proposed in my 2 volumes, does not include all of the possible building types, zoning and code resolutions, but in my opinion and based on my experience is the most important tool in this complex process of approval of new investments. This tool can be used not only by designers of the documentations, but by the expediters, plan examiners, contractors, and finally by the owners of the investments. These two books will be a unified procedure for all the factors which contribute to the realization of investments. I consider to mention and other benefits realized by this written DATA BASE: • A reduced work load in the department of building • A uniform approach for all 5 boroughs in the verification and approval process • A reduction of time for verification and approval • An improvement in the quality of documentations presented for verification and approval • The use of self certification will be increased by the confidence of designers for their documentations • A remarkable reduction of people involved in this complex process • A sensible reduction of the investment costs.

Book excerpt: The number 1 non-fiction bestseller.More than 100,000 copies sold! 'What we have, we hold'MOttO OF AUStRALIA'S 2/17tH BAttALIONIn the tradition of his bestselling Kokoda, Peter FitzSimons, Australia's most beloved popular historian, focuses on one of the seminal moments in Australian history: the Battle of tobruk in 1941, in which more than 15 000 Australian troops - backed by British artillery - fought in excruciating desert heat through eight long months, against Adolf Hitler's formidable Afrika Korps.During the dark heart of World War II, when Hitler turned his attention to conquering North Africa, a distracted and far-fl ung Allied force could not give its all to the defence of Libya. So the job was left to the roughest, toughest bunch that could be mustered: the Australian Imperial Force. the AIF's defence of the harbour city of tobruk against the Afrika Korps' armoured division is not only the stuff of Australian legend, it is one of the great battles of all time, as against the might of General Rommel and his Panzers, the Australians relied on one factor in particular to give them the necessary strength against the enemy: mateship.Drawing on extensive source material - including diaries and letters, many never published before - this extraordinary book, written in Peter FitzSimons' highly readable style, is the definitive account of this remarkable chapter in Australia's history.Foreword by Manfred Rommel.

Winner of the Adelaide Festival Award for Literature for Non-Fiction 2010 'a long-awaited and splendidly breezy blockbuster biography of the indefatigable, self-inventing and campaigning author of My Brilliant Career' Richard Holmes, AUStRALIAN BOOK REVIEW 'to meet Miles Franklin was as invigorating as to ride on a spring morning across the Monaro plains she so dearly loved' Henrietta Drake-Brockman Stella Miles Franklin was born in the Australian bush. At the age of twenty-one, she became an international publishing sensation with MY BRILLIANt CAREER, which more than a century later is still regarded as an Australian classic. Miles' early success gave her entree to literary and socialist circles in Sydney and Melbourne. there she met Banjo Paterson, the Goldstein sisters and Joseph Furphy, among others. In 1906 she went to work for the women's labour movement in Chicago. In 1915 she relocated to London and quickly found herself travelling to the Balkans to help nurse wounded Allied soldiers. Returning to London, she campaigned for various feminist and progressive causes, all the while continuing to write, often submitting work under pseudonyms that she guarded fiercely all her life. In the 1930s she returned to Australia, taking up the cause of Australian writers. Novelist, journalist, nationalist, feminist, larrikin - Miles Franklin was all these and more. And her endowment of the Miles Franklin Literary Award founded an Australian cultural institution that remains our most prestigious prize for literature.'more than the definitive biography of Australia's most gregarious literary figure' WEEKEND AUStRALIAN 'Roe's mighty biography of a woman who was pivotal to the culture during a formative period of Australian literary life is meticulous and welcome' Hilary McPhee, tHE AUStRALIAN

The humans call him 'Bell Sing', but to the other camels he is known as 'He Who Spits Further Than the Wind'. Transported from the mountains and deserts of the 'Northwest Frontier' (present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan), Bell Sing accompanies explorers Burke and Wills as they try to cross Australia from south to north. Bell Sing has never had a high opinion of humans -- or horses. And this expedition is the worst-managed caravan he's ever been in. Camel handler Dost Mahomet and soldier John King are also beginning to wonder if their leader is competent ... or crazy. Bell Sing can smell water over the sandhills on the horizon ... and freedom too. Can the expedition succeed? And who -- if anyone -- will survive? This is the gritty and true story about one of the most extraordinary and iconic events in Australia's history.
