Graceful evo- tion of networks, new access schemes, flexible protocols, increased variety of services and applications, networks reliability and availability, security, are some of the present and future challenges that have to be met. MWCN (Mobile and Wireless Communications Networks) and PWC (Personal Wireless Communications) are two conferences sponsored by IFIP WG 6.8 that provide forum for discussion between researchers, practitioners and students interested in new developments in mobile and wireless networks, services, applications and computing. In 2008, MWCN and PWC were held in Toulouse, France, from September 30 to October 2, 2008. MWNC’2008 and PWC’2008 were coupled to form the first edition of IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference (WMNC’2008). MWCN and PWC topics were revisited in order to make them complementary and covering together the main hot issues in wireless and mobile networks, services, applications, computing, and technologies.

Book excerpt: Our world is increasingly driven by sophisticated networks of advanced computing technology, and the basic operation of everyday society is becoming increasingly vulnerable to those networks’ shortcomings. The implementation and upkeep of a strong network defense is a substantial challenge, beset not only by economic disincentives, but also by an inherent logistical bias that grants advantage to attackers. Network Security Attacks and Countermeasures discusses the security and optimization of computer networks for use in a variety of disciplines and fields. Touching on such matters as mobile and VPN security, IP spoofing, and intrusion detection, this edited collection emboldens the efforts of researchers, academics, and network administrators working in both the public and private sectors. This edited compilation includes chapters covering topics such as attacks and countermeasures, mobile wireless networking, intrusion detection systems, next-generation firewalls, and more.

This book was released on 2010-06-27 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Autonomous Infrastructure, Management and Se- rity (AIMS 2010) was a single-track event integrating regular conference paper s- sions, tutorials, keynotes, and a PhD student workshop into a highly interactive event. The main goal of AIMS is to look beyond borders and to stimulate the exchange of ideas across different communities and among PhD students. AIMS 2010 collocated the International Summer School in Network and Service Management (ISSNSM 2010). This unique summer school offers hands-on learning experiences in network and service management topics, which requires attendees to work in practical on-site courses combined with preceding short tutorial-like teaching sessions. AIMS 2010––which took place during June 23–25, 2010, in Zürich, Switzerland and was hosted by the Communication Systems Group CSG, Department of Inform- ics IFI, of the University of Zürich UZH––followed the already established tradition of an unusually vivid and interactive conference series in terms of the fourth conf- ence, after successful instantiations in Oslo, Norway 2007, Bremen, Germany 2008, and Enschede, The Netherlands 2009. AIMS 2010 focused especially on autonomous management aspects of modern networks and their services. The set of mechanisms, peer-to-peer-based schemes, scalability aspects, and autonomous approaches are of major interest. In particular the design, monitoring, management, and protection of networked systems in an efficient, secure, and autonomic manner are key to comm- cially viable and successful networks and services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercial exploitation of distributed computing technologies is slowly starting to become popular under the general area of cloud computing. These solutions allow selling and buying of resources (i.e., computing, network, software, and data resources) on demand. Existing solutions in this area are diverse, ranging from Infrastructure-- a-Service (IaaS) models via Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models. Although the economics of these services is not yet fully understood and the interoperability between such services is still lacking, a common market for computing services is slowly developing. Such a market would allow buyers and sellers of computing services to trade their excess capacity or make available their capacity at a cost. However, it is still not p- sible for a market participant to act as a resource provider or seller, or trade based on the current level of demand. Another example of a developing open market is the emergence of Web2.0-based services. These enable consumers to create new services by aggregating services from multiple providers. The benefit of these solutions is that “value” can be created by combining services at different prices.

Book excerpt: All business organizations strive for increasing their growth by seizing new opportunities, reducing enterprise costs, attracting new customers and retaining old customers. In doing so, business intelligence and analytics allow business organizations to make better plans, informed decisions, and monitor their progress towards planned goals and objectives. The more disruptive power of IT technologies comes synergistically. Individual IT technologies do not work in isolation. Business intelligence systems are built on other digital technologies, such as mobile and collaborative technologies, cloud computing, virtualization, and enterprise resource planning and enterprise information systems. This volume presents sixteen of the most insightful research papers amongst the various contributions accepted for presentations at the International Conference on Information Systems and Technologies (ICIST 2013) and the International Conference on Software Engineering and New Technologies (ICSENT’12), held in Tangier, Morocco, and Hammamet, Tunisia respectively. These papers truly represent what today’s CIOs see as the top-priority disruptive IT technologies that will help business organizations seize digital opportunities to increase their growth and reduce operating costs.
