Book excerpt: The annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) aims to provide a forum that brings together researchers and scientists from academia as well as man- ers and engineers from industry to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks. AccessNets 2008 was the third edition of this event, which was successfully held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, during October 15–17, 2008. The conference consisted of two keynote addresses, five invited talks, seven technical sessions, and two panel sessions. Leonid Kazovsky from Stanford University and Kevin Schneider, Chief Technology Officer of ADTRAN, delivered their exciting keynote - dresses on “Future Evolution of Broadband Access,” and “Carrier Ethernet and the Evo- ing Access Networks,” respectively. Maurice Gagnaire, Martin Reisslein, Martin Maier, Paolo Giacomazzi, and John M. Cioffi gave interesting invited talks on different research topics on access networks. The technical papers presented original and fundamental - search advances in the area of access networks, while the panels focused on the interesting topics of “Fiber Assisted Wireless for Broadband Access Networks and Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) Successes. ” These conference proceedings include all the technical papers that were presented at AccessNets 2008. We hope that it will become a useful reference for researchers and practitioners working in the area of access networks.

This book introduces the reader to the next generation of cryptographic algorithms, the systems that resist quantum-computer attacks: in particular, post-quantum public-key encryption systems and post-quantum public-key signature systems. Leading experts have joined forces for the first time to explain the state of the art in quantum computing, hash-based cryptography, code-based cryptography, lattice-based cryptography, and multivariate cryptography. Mathematical foundations and implementation issues are included. This book is an essential resource for students and researchers who want to contribute to the field of post-quantum cryptography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 10th International Workshop on Information Security Applications (WISA 2009) was held in Busan, Korea during August 25–27, 2009. The workshop was hosted by the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC), supported by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA), sponsored by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security (MoPAS) and the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), financially sponsored by the ST. Ltd. The aim of the workshop was to serve as a forum for presenting new research and experimental results in the area of information security applications from academic communities as well as from industry. The workshop program covered a wide range of security aspects, from cryptography to systems and network security and experimental work as well. It was our great pleasure and honor to serve as the Program Committee Co-chairs of WISA2009. This year, too, the proceedings of the workshop were published in the LNCS series of Springer. The WISA 2009 Program Committee received 79 papers form 16 countries. This year the submissions were exceptionally strong, and the committee accepted 27 papers for the full paper presentation track. All the papers were carefully evaluated through blind peer-review by at least three members of the Program Comm- tee. We would like to say that acceptance is a great achievement since the selection process was highly competitive, and many good papers were not accepted.

This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume elaborates on both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of resilience. Reviewing the literature exploring the concept of resilience in engineering, it discusses resilience in terms of the various definitions used, the methodologies proposed to characterize resilience, and the metrics put forward to quantify the resilience of specific service infrastructure systems. The review also identifies the key factors that contribute to organizational resilience. The concept of resilience is compared to other system properties such as reliability, robustness, flexibility and agility, by taking into consideration what systems are prepared against (types of failure), the causes of failure in systems (uncertainty), and how systems react to overcome failure (level of adaptability). A review is also provided of several resilience-enabling schemes, which improve resilience by reducing vulnerability and increasing adaptive capacity. The book puts forward a new framework, the Networked Infrastructure Resilience Assessment (NIRA) framework, through which the resilience of systems can be measured by assessing the impact of disruptions on key performance measures. By applying the framework to various case studies, the book demonstrates the ability of the proposed framework to assess resilience across a wide variety of networked infrastructure systems. The case studies probe the resilience of the following critical infrastructure systems in the face of specific disruptive events: telecommunication, transportation, maritime transportation and organizational networks. This text is intended for all levels of academia — from undergraduate through to research level — as well as professionals and decision-makers involved in the development, analysis and evaluation of infrastructure systems.

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the ever-increasing global threat of terrorist attacks, the personal screening industry has been growing at a rapid rate. Many methods have been developed for detecting concealed weapons and explosives on the human body. In this important new book, the authors discuss their experiences over the last decade designing and testing microwave and millimetre wave detection and screening systems. It includes examples of actual devices that they have built and tested, along with test results that were obtained in realistic scenarios. The book focuses on the development of non-imaging detection systems, which are similar to radar. These systems do not form a conventional image of the scene and the person(s) being screened. Instead, the sensors detect and analyze the effect that the body, and any concealed objects, has on a transmitted waveform. These systems allow remote detection of both metallic and dielectric devices concealed on the human body in both indoor and outdoor environments. The book discusses a number of sensor types, including active millimetre wave sensors using the direct detection and the heterodyne approach, active microwave sensors for CNR-based object detection, passive millimetre wave sensors, and the role of shielding effects in operating non-imaging MM-wave sensors. The goal of this book is to systemize the test results obtained by the authors, helping specialists to develop improved screening systems in the future. Another goal is to show how the use of non-imaging systems can reduce the cost of the screening process.
