Book Synopsis Europeanization and Regionalization in the EU's Enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe by : J. Hughes
Download or read book Europeanization and Regionalization in the EU's Enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe written by J. Hughes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of EU conditionality and compliance during the enlargement to the Central and Eastern European candidate countries. EU conditionality for membership is widely understood as having been a driving force for Europeanization, providing incentives and sanctions for compliance or non-compliance with EU norms, such as the 'Copenhagen Criteria' and the adoption of the acquis communautaire . By taking regional policy and regionalization as a case study, this book provides a comparative analysis of the effects of conditionality on the Central and East European countries and explores the many paradoxes and weaknesses in the use of EU conditionality over time.

Book Synopsis The NEBI YEARBOOK 2001/2002 by : Lars Hedegaard

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorvald Stoltenberg President of the Norwegian Red Cross Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board Despite the very optimistic language on the imminence of new accessions to the European Union that came out of the June 2001 European Council in Gothen burg, it will serve no good purpose to neglect the fact that EU membership for the Central and Eastern European applicants remains a difficult process. Painful experience makes it prudent to exercise caution in predicting developments with in the European Union. Negotiations may drag out, snags may appear and some thing may happen on the way to ratification. So perhaps it is wise to take a broad er view of European integration - and therefore integration within the North European, Barents and Baltic Sea region that is the focus of this Yearbook. EU membership for those countries that are able to satisfy the Copenhagen requirements - and the chapters of the acquis communautaire that have subse quently been specified - is certainly a prize worth fighting for. But all is not lost if some of the applicants end up not joining the Union as a result of the current enlargement round. Even more important than formal membership is the process of growing together that has taken place simultaneously with the membership negotiations. We are dealing here with integration in the real world of trade, investments, division of labour, politics, environment, hard and soft security, people-to-people relations etc.
Book Synopsis The Baltic States from the Soviet Union to the European Union by : Richard Mole
Download or read book The Baltic States from the Soviet Union to the European Union written by Richard Mole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baltic States are unique in being the only member-states of the EU to have fought to regain their sovereignty from the Soviet Union, only then to cede it to Brussels in certain key areas. Similarly, no member-states have had to struggle as hard as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to preserve their identity after fifty years of Soviet nationality policy in the face of sub-state and supra-state challenges. The post-communist experience of the Baltic States thus allows us to examine debates about identity as a source of political power; the conditioning and constraining influence of identity discourses on social, political and economic change; and the orientation and outcome of their external relations. In particular, the book examines the impact of Russian and Soviet control of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; the Baltic independence movements of the late 1980s/early 1990s; the citizenship debates; relations with Russia vis-à-vis the withdrawal of the troops of the former Soviet Army; drawing of the shared boundary and the rights of Russian-speaking minorities as well as the efforts undertaken by the three Baltic States to rebuild themselves, modernise their economies, cope with the ensuing social changes and facilitate their accession to the EU and NATO.

Book Synopsis Taming Nationalism? Political Community Building in the Post-Soviet Baltic States by : Dovile Budryte
Download or read book Taming Nationalism? Political Community Building in the Post-Soviet Baltic States written by Dovile Budryte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisiting the process of political community building in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, this book analyzes the roles that international actors have played in these processes and assesses the unintended consequences of this involvement. The study differs from other works on ethnic minorities and nationalism in the former Soviet Union by exploring the use of minority rights discourse and the salience of historical memory. Case studies examine the transformation of nationalism in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - all former Soviet republics - which have experienced Soviet nationalities policy first-hand. Primarily intended for an academic audience and practitioners interested in promoting tolerance in multi-ethnic societies, the book's historical narrative will also appeal to readers with a general interest in the former Soviet Union and post-Communism.

Download or read book Europe on the Move written by A. T. Lane and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by a multinational group of authors examines the political, social and economic consequences of the most recent enlargement of the European Union. It does not confine itself to a discussion of the impact on the new member states but also considers the likely effects of this enlargement on the EU itself. These effects include not only the familiar need for new modes of governance but also involve other changes resulting from a process of what has been called mutual learning. These essays analyse various aspects of this process starting with the Constitutional Convention. Sometimes the focus is on the impact on the new members, sometimes on the changes likely to occur in the EU and its older members as a result of this enlargement. The emphasis on change is encapsulated in the book's title, 'Europe on the Move'.
