This book was released on 2004-09-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous conference in this series (AMTA 2002) took up the theme “From Research to Real Users”, and sought to explore why recent research on data-driven machine translation didn’t seem to be moving to the marketplace. As it turned out, the ?rst commercial products of the data-driven research movement were just over the horizon, andintheinterveningtwoyearstheyhavebeguntoappearinthemarketplace. Atthesame time,rule-basedmachinetranslationsystemsareintroducingdata-driventechniquesinto the mix in their products. Machine translation as a software application has a 50-year history. There are an increasing number of exciting deployments of MT, many of which will be exhibited and discussed at the conference. But the scale of commercial use has never approached the estimates of the latent demand. In light of this, we reversed the question from AMTA 2002, to look at the next step in the path to commercial success for MT. We took user needs as our theme, and explored how or whether market requirements are feeding into research programs. The transition of research discoveries to practical use involves te- nicalquestionsthatarenotassexyasthosethathavedriventheresearchcommunityand research funding. Book Synopsis Catalytic Strategies for Conscious Social Transformation by : Garry Jacobs
Download or read book Catalytic Strategies for Conscious Social Transformation written by Garry Jacobs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the unprecedented reach, magnitude and complexity of global challenges—political, economic, technological, social and environmental. It advocates fundamental changes in theory, research, public policy, and institutions, and advances new thinking on global leadership, human security, human-centered economics, and human rights. The book also proposes measures to break down the barriers between academic disciplines and between research and policy-making, and reconciles the objective facts of science with the subjective truths of the arts and human values. It replaces mechanistic analytic thinking with integrated knowledge, bridging the divide between abstract theory and the living complexity of social reality.
Book Synopsis Estonian Pragmapoetics, from Poetry and Fiction to Philosophy and Genetics by : Arne Merilai
Download or read book Estonian Pragmapoetics, from Poetry and Fiction to Philosophy and Genetics written by Arne Merilai and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines an innovative approach to the study of literature called pragmapoetics, a philosophy of poetic utterances. The book posits that studies are as much a branch of linguistics as they are of the philosophy of language and mind, and considers the poetic self-referential function a profound feature of life and intentionality. As a structuralist thinker, the author is drawn towards graphical definitions for their greater elucidative power. This collection contains three sections: “General Poetics,” “Pragmapoetics,” and “Estonian and Comparative Poetics,” consisting of nineteen of the author’s works from 1996 up to 2022, which best represent his approach.

Book Synopsis Computers and Translation by : Harold Somers
Download or read book Computers and Translation written by Harold Somers and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-05-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about computers and translation. It is not, however, a Computer Science book, nor does it have much to say about Translation Theory. Rather it is a book for translators and other professional linguists (technical writers, bilingual secretaries, language teachers even), which aims at clarifying, explaining and exemplifying the impact that computers have had and are having on their profession. It is about Machine Translation (MT), but it is also about Computer-Aided (or -Assisted) Translation (CAT), computer-based resources for translators, the past, present and future of translation and the computer. The editor and main contributor, Harold Somers, is Professor of Language Engineering at UMIST (Manchester). With over 25 years’ experience in the field both as a researcher and educator, Somers is editor of one of the field’s premier journals, and has written extensively on the subject, including the field’s most widely quoted textbook on MT, now out of print and somewhat out of date. The current volume aims to provide an accessible yet not overwhelmingly technical book aimed primarily at translators and other users of CAT software.
