Book excerpt: This book illustrates the use of 2-D resistivity survey in determining the potential aquifer. 2-D resistivity is one of the efficient method which are non-destructive, rapid and cost-effective in finding groundwater or aquifer. Thus, this book is written to share the knowledge of 2-D resistivity survey in characterizing an aquifer. Seven different locations were compile with borehole records and geological evidence to validate the 2-D resistivity results. Besides that, the porosity calculation using the equation from Archie’s law was used to support the interpretation from 2-D resistivity results to capture the reader’s interest and understanding. The authors foresee that this book has the potential to better expand the knowledge on 2-D resistivity and share the experiences with those from the same field or to others in various fields such as engineering, environmental studies, geology and hydrology.

Book excerpt: Cross-cultural research is rife with ethical and methodological challenges but, despite the increased demand for such research, discussions on 'culturally sensitive methodologies' are still largely neglected. Consequently, researchers often find themselves faced with difficulties but lack information on how to deal with them. This text provides an in-depth discussion on how to perform qualitative research in cross-cultural contexts with an emphasis on a more ethical, sensible and responsible approach. Pranee Liamputtong suggests culturally sensitive and appropriate research methods that would work well with cultural groups. She offers thought-provoking perspectives and diverse cultural examples which will be of value to both novice and experienced cross-cultural researchers. Throughout the volume there are references to the excellent work of many cross-cultural researchers who have paved the way in different social and cultural settings.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agri cultural water requirements in many areas and the normally associated critical unreliability of surface water supplies in arid and semi-arid zones, groundwater exploration and use is of fundamental importance for logical economic development. Two interrelated facets should be evident in all such groundwater projects : (a) definition of groundwater recharge mechanisms and characteristics for identified geological formations, in order to determine whether exploitation in the long-term involves 'mining' of an es sentially 'fossil' resource or withdrawal from a dynamic supply. A solution to this aspect is essential for development of a re source management policy: (b) determination of recharge variability in time and space to thus enable determination of total aquifer input and to quantify such practical aspects as 'minimum risk' waste disposal locations and artificial recharge potential via (e.g.) devegetation or engi neering works. However, current international developments relating to natural recharge indicate the following 'problems' ; no single comprehensive estimation technique can yet be iden tified from the spectrum of methods available; all are reported to give suspect results.

Rather than offering recipes for specific techniques, master storyteller Robert Stake stimulates readers to discover "how things work" in organizations, programs, communities, and other systems. Topics range from identifying a research question to selecting methods, gathering data, interpreting and analyzing the results, and producing a well-thought-through written report. In-depth examples from actual studies emphasize the role of the researcher as instrument and interpreter, while boxed vignettes and learning projects encourage self-reflection and critical thinking. Other useful pedagogical features include quick-reference tables and charts, sample project management forms, and an end-of-book glossary. After reading this book, doctoral students and novice qualitative researchers will be able to plan a study from beginning to end.

Book excerpt: Sediments are loose earth materials with variable grain size such as sand, silt and clay that accumulate on the land surface, in river and lake beds, and on the ocean floor. This book reports how data obtained for different elements (stable and radioactive) present in bottom sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) can be utilised to investigate hydrological processes occurring in different hydrographic basins in Brazil, South America. Particular attention is directed towards describing the importance of sediments on the adsorption of different stable/radioactive constituents. This book also evaluates the most common methods utilised to obtain metal background values for soil and sediments. These techniques are helpful when it is necessary to differentiate the background metal concentration from the area, from the pollutant metal concentration. Also reviewed is the data on content of aliphatic hydrocarbons (HC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and suspended matter in snow, ice and under-ice water and bottom sediments at Northern Dvina mouth. Other chapters in this book examine the decomposition rate of organic matter in river sediments using the litterbag method, as well as measurement of O2 consumption rate by microbial respiration and microbiomass in sediment, and the speciation of some spiked components of sediments such as sand and clays. It is intended that this review will provide the present state of knowledge and current trends for investigators in this field.

Book excerpt: Are you managing your brain? Or is your brain managing you? If you value self-knowledge, sooner or later you will face the profound role that the radically different perspectives of your left- and right-brain hemispheres play in your daily decisions. This timely book guides you in integrating these contrasting views of the world, and delves into the impact of brain lateralization on political progress, cultural polarization, and even the quest for personal and world peace. A practical field guide to whole-brain, heart-centered living, "The Whole-Brain Path to Peace" takes you a crucial step beyond the science of brain lateralization; this book invites you into a new way of perceiving your world through whole-brain living. But success on this path also requires the illumination of philosophy and the far-reaching insights of modern revelation. Olson's broader view highlights the distortions that each side of the brain can have when not informed by the other, and points us to more sensible ways of achieving greater balance.
