Book excerpt: The Los Angeles region is increasingly being held up as a prototype for the collective urban future of the United States. Yet it is probably the least understood, most under-studied major city in the US. Very few people beyond the boundaries of Southern California have an accurate appreciation of what the region is, who lives there, and what it does. This groundbreaking collection of essays brings together well-respected contributors to dispel the myths about Southern California and to begin the process of `rethinking' Los Angeles.

This book was released on 2004-05-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of innovative papers on strategies for analyzing the spatial and economic impacts of disasters. Natural and human-induced disasters pose several challenges for conventional modeling. For example, disasters entail complex linkages between the natural, built, and socio-economic environments. They often create chaos and economic disequilibrium, and can also cause unexpected long-term, structural changes. Dynamic interactions among agents and behavioral adjustments in a disaster become complicated. The papers in this volume make notable progress in tackling these challenges through refinements of conventional methods, as well as new modeling frameworks and multidisciplinary, integrative strategies. The papers also provide case study applications that afford new insights on disaster processes and loss reduction strategies.

Download or read book Scan of Recent Travel Surveys written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A specific objective of this scan of recent travel surveys is to facilitate the exchange of information among agencies and individuals having an interest in the design and conduct of household and other types of travel surveys. The information contained in this report complements the companion "Travel Survey Manual", published as part of the Travel Model Improvement Program (TMIP). The "Travel Survey Manual" is a reference document describing accepted practices and recent advancements for the most common types of travel surveys. Four purposes guided the development of this scan: to determine the general state-of-the-practice of travel surveys in this country; to identify the types of surveys being conducted, and the frequency of data collection; to compare United States survey practices to travel survey procedures being used in other countries; and, to assess the degree to which emerging state-of-the-art survey techniques are being introduced into practice.

Economic Research Centre and published by Paris, France : European Conference of Ministers of Transport, Economic Research Centre. This book was released on 2002 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encouraging wage earners to use public transport has a vital role to play in meeting environment objectives, particularly the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Changing people's behavior calls for action in the workplace and one option open to employers is to recruit mobility managers whose task is to help reduce employees' dependence on private car use. Governments can support such initiatives by running information campaigns, by publishing practical guides to incentive schemes and by harmonizing regulatory and fiscal frameworks. Round Table 121 was devoted to this topic and opened with a discussion of the provision of free parking facilities to company employees in the United States, a practice that has many knock-on effects and ramifications. One solution is for companies to replace free parking with cash-out schemes under which financial benefits are given to employees who choose not to make use of their free parking space. The Round Table then proceeded to consider several examples of employee mobility schemes in Europe--pilot project "Sanfte Mobilitäts-Partnershaft"--Company management of staff's travel choices [model establishments: BMLFUW, theFederal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry ... ; UBA GmbH, the Federal Office for the Environment; the AVL List GmbH (research company); Tulln State Hospital; and the Medienhaus Vorarlberg (newspaper publisher)]--and ended by drawing conclusions of interest to local, regional and national authorities aiming to chart a course of action towards achieving the goal of sustainable transport.--Publisher's description.
