Book Synopsis Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives by : Robert Thacker
Download or read book Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives written by Robert Thacker and published by Emblem Editions. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book about one of the world’s great authors, Alice Munro, which shows how her life and her stories intertwine. For almost thirty years Robert Thacker has been researching this book, steeping himself in Alice Munro’s life and work, working with her co-operation to make it complete. The result is a feast of information for Alice Munro’s admirers everywhere. By following “the parallel tracks” of Alice Munro’s life and Alice Munro’s texts, he gives a thorough and revealing account of both her life and work. “There is always a starting point in reality,” she once said of her stories, and this book reveals just how often her stories spring from her life. The book is chronological, starting with her pioneer ancestors, but with special attention paid to her parents and to her early days growing up poor in Wingham. Then all of her life stages—the marriage to Jim Munro, the move to Vancouver, then to Victoria to start the bookstore, the three daughters, the divorce, the return to Huron County, and the new life with Gerry Fremlin—leading to the triumphs as, story by story, book by book, she gains fame around the world, until rumours of a Nobel Prize circulate . . .
Book Synopsis The Canada Company and the Huron Tract, 1826-1853 by : Robert C. Lee
Download or read book The Canada Company and the Huron Tract, 1826-1853 written by Robert C. Lee and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canada Company, with its base in England, was responsible for settling over two million acres of land in Upper Canada. Author Robert C. Lee focuses on the Huron Tract and on the dominant personalities (many of them Scottish-born) ranging from John Galt and Tiger Dunlop to the bishops Macdonell and Strachan, who had an impact on the company's operations. The politics of the day, coupled with the diversity of the players, create an astounding blend of vision, intrigue and mischief as a backdrop to the bottom-line profit aspirations of the company's shareholders. The founding of towns - Guelph, Goderich, Stratford, St. Marys and others in the area - is one of the legacies of the company. Lee's extensive research reveals a significant period in Ontario's history.

Book Synopsis Ontario Since Confederation by : Edgar-Andre Montigny
Download or read book Ontario Since Confederation written by Edgar-Andre Montigny and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2000-12-15 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario Since Confederation contains some of the most recent scholarship in the field of post-Confederation Ontario history. This comprehensive collection, the first of its kind to be published in almost a decade, is intended primarily to introduce students to new areas of debate and new methodologies in Ontario history. The articles range widely over the political, economic, and social history of the province, encompassing both traditional and newly emerging topics. They focus on the theme of 'state and society,' describing and articulating the interactions between social values and ideals, political action, and government bureaucracies from diverse perspectives. The collection raises fundamental questions about the role, nature, and development of the modern bureaucratic state. How pervasive was the influence of the state? Does the state determine or reflect social values? To what degree, and in what manner, could the powers of the state successfully be resisted? Focusing specifically on Ontario history, contributors address the paradoxical relationship between provincial and national history. Some essays explore the influence of the federal government on the province in areas such as pollution management, native rights, and welfare. Other chapters discuss issues of interracial relationships, the family, and unwed motherhood. The variety of topics and approaches represented in this collection attests to the diversity of Ontario and the rich social fabric of its history.

Book Synopsis Where Are the Voices Coming From? by :
Download or read book Where Are the Voices Coming From? written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on Canadian history and its legacies as represented in novels and films in English and French, produced in Canada mainly in the 1980s and 1990s. The approach is both cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, aiming at articulating Canadian differences through a comparison of anglophone and francophone cultures, illustrated by works treating some of the different groups which make up Canadian society – English-Canadian, Québecois, Acadian, Native, and ethnic minorities. The emphasis is on the problematic representation of Canadianness, which is closely bound up with constructions of history and its legacies – dispossession, criminality, nomadism, Gothicism, the Maritime. The English/French language difference is emblematic of Canadian difference; the two-part arrangement, with one section on Literature and the other on Film, sets up the pattern of relationships between the two forms of cultural representation that these essays explore. Essays in the Literature section are on single texts by such writers as: Margaret Atwood, Tomson Highway, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Anne Michaels, and Alice Munro; Gabrielle Roy, Anne Hébert, Antonine Maillet, Bernard Assiniwi, and Régine Robin. The Film section with its mirror structure both supplements and amplifies this dialogue, extending notions of Canadianness with its emphasis on voices from Quebec and Acadia traditionally ‘othered’ in Canadian history. Filmmakers treated include: Phillip Borsos, Atom Egoyan, Ted Kotcheff, Mort Ransen, and Vincent Ward; Denys Arcand, Gilles Carle, Alanis Obomsawin, Léa Pool, and Jacques Savoie.
