Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations by : Mario Milman
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations written by Mario Milman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1990-07-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together ten papers presented at the Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, held in April 1988 at Florida Atlantic University. The papers illuminate the relationship between harmonic analysis and partial differential equations and present results of some of the foremost experts in these areas. Among the topics covered are: application of fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations to the Monge Ampere equation; estimates for Green functions for the purpose of studying Dirichlet problems for operators in non-divergence form; an extension of classical potential theory to the case of nonsmooth domains; the relation between Riesz potentials and maximal fractional operators due to Muckenhoupt and Wheeden; and the Lax-Phillips scattering theory applied to the double Hilbert transform. Directed at research mathematicians and graduate students, the papers require knowledge of the classical tools of analysis, such as measure theory, Sobolev spaces, and potential theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of a conference on Harmonic Analysis and Number Theory held at McGill University (Montreal) in April 1996. The papers are dedicated to the memory of Carl Herz, who had deep interests in both harmonic analysis and number theory. These two disciplines have a symbiotic relationship that is reflected in the papers in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal aim of this book is to give an introduction to harmonic analysis and the theory of unitary representations of Lie groups. The second edition has been brought up to date with a number of textual changes in each of the five chapters, a new appendix on Fatou's theorem has been added in connection with the limits of discrete series, and the bibliography has been tripled in length.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a tremendous growth in psychology as a field of study and in the number of students of clinical psychology in particular. The latter is partly due to the proliferation of professional schools of psychology that are devoted to practitioner-oriented degrees, rather than the traditional research-oriented course of study. Whatever school students emerge from, however, they are obliged to demonstrate proficiency in providing clinical services. This multi-volume handbook, is devoted to describing the core competency areas in providing psychological services which is relevant to practitioners as well as clinical researchers. As such, it covers assessment and conceptualization of cases, the application of evidence-based methods, supervision, consultation, cross-cultural factors, and ethics. The Handbook comprises three volumes with contributions by experts in each area. The goal is to provide detailed descriptions of competence levels and describe the developmental trajectory required to reach the highest of these levels. Each chapter in Volume I will follow a similar format including an overview, basic competencies, and expert competencies. This will facilitate easy comparison across chapters. All will be illustrated with case examples. Subsequent volumes will have a similarly structured format that will include maintenance factors, mechanisms of change, evidence-based treatment approaches, and a focus on the transition from basic skills to expert functioning. It is expected that the systematic presentation of skills will provide a gold standard against which to measure individual performance and in this regard will be valuable to students, instructors, and credentialing bodies.
Book Synopsis Applied Abstract Algebra by : David Joyner
Download or read book Applied Abstract Algebra written by David Joyner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of computers that can handle symbolic manipulations, abstract algebra can now be applied. In this book David Joyner, Richard Kreminski, and Joann Turisco introduce a wide range of abstract algebra with relevant and interesting applications, from error-correcting codes to cryptography to the group theory of Rubik's cube. They cover basic topics such as the Euclidean algorithm, encryption, and permutations. Hamming codes and Reed-Solomon codes used on today's CDs are also discussed. The authors present examples as diverse as "Rotation," available on the Nokia 7160 cell phone, bell ringing, and the game of NIM. In place of the standard treatment of group theory, which emphasizes the classification of groups, the authors highlight examples and computations. Cyclic groups, the general linear group GL(n), and the symmetric groups are emphasized. With its clear writing style and wealth of examples, Applied Abstract Algebra will be welcomed by mathematicians, computer scientists, and students alike. Each chapter includes exercises in GAP (a free computer algebra system) and MAGMA (a noncommercial computer algebra system), which are especially helpful in giving students a grasp of practical examples.
