Book excerpt: This volume contains the manuscripts of research lectures by the nine fellows of the summer program. Some reports are obviously related to the main theme; some are related to crucial physical processes in the Polar Oceans; some are pure fluid dynamics or related to particular educational goals of the fellows. These lecture reports have not been edited or reviewed in a manner appropriate for published papers, but we hope that several of them have the beginnings of an idea which will eventually find its way into the literature. Therefore, readers who wish to reproduce any parts of these 'Unpublished Manuscripts' should seek permission directly from the authors. Seven of the fellows were supported by ONR, NASA and NOAA. One of the fellows was supported by The West German Government through the Max Plank Institute for Meteorology, and one of the fellows was supported by the Canadian Government through the Institute of Ocean Sciences. Book excerpt: The explosive growth of dynamical system theory stem in large part from the realization that it is applicable to many natural phenomena. Indeed, much of the theoretical dvelopment has been sparked by numerical and laboratory experiments which exhibit ordered sequences of behavior that call for a general framework of interpretation. Five lectures exposed us to elementaty examples of bifurcation and chaos, to symmetry breaking, normal forms and temporal and spatial disorder, as well as to pertinent fluid mechanical and astrophysical phenomena. In addition are the development with an elegant summary of different types of intermittency; Seminars on phase instability and turbulence as an extension of the lecture series; and the fascinating correspondence between the frequencies observed in one recent fluid mechanics experiments and results from number theory relating the Fibonacci series to the golden mean.

Book excerpt: The vigorous stirring of a cup of tea gives rise, as we all know, to interesting fluid dynamical phenomena, some of which are very hard to explain. In this book our "cup of tea" contains the currents of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, mantle, and fluid core. Our goal is to under stand the basic physical processes which are most important in describing what we observe, directly or indirectly, in these complex systems. While in many respects our understanding is measured by the ability to predict, the focus here will be on relatively simple models which can aid our physical intuition by suggesting useful mathematical methods of investiga tion. These elementary models can be viewed as part of a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity, moving toward those which might be use fully predictive. The discussion in this book will deal primarily with the Earth. Interplanetary probes of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have revealed many exciting phenomena which bear on geophysical fluid dynamics. They have also enabled us to see the effect of changing the values of certain parameters, such as gravity and rotation rate, on geophysical flows. On the other hand, satellite observations of our own planet on a daily and hourly basis have turned it into a unique laboratory for the study of fluid motions on a scale never dreamt of before: the motion of cyclones can be observed via satellite just as wing tip vortices are studied in a wind tunnel.

Download or read book Coevolution of Black Holes and Galaxies: Volume 1, Carnegie Observatories Astrophysics Series written by Luis C. Ho and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published in 2004. Black holes are among the most mysterious objects in the Universe. Weighing up to several billion Suns, massive black holes have long been suspected to be the central powerhouses of energetic phenomena such as quasars. Advances in astronomy have not only provided spectacular proof of this long-standing paradigm, but have revealed the unexpected result that far from being rare, exotic beasts, they inhabit the center of virtually all large galaxies. Candidate black holes have been identified in increasingly large numbers of galaxies, both inactive and active, to the point where statistical studies are possible. Fresh work has highlighted the close connection between the formation, growth, and evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. This volume contains the invited lectures from an international symposium that was held to explore this exciting theme, and is a valuable review for professional astronomers and graduate students.
