Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters from Bruce County documents an English familys 1835 immigration to Ontario where they became pioneers in the unsettled bush. The parents of this family just happen to be the authors great great grandparents, Joseph and Susannah Bacon. The letters were written from Bruce County, Ontario in 1881 and 1882 by Joseph some years after Susannahs death to his son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Elizabeth Couch Bacon, then in Resort Township, Emmet County, Michigan. Henry and Elizabeth are the authors great grandparents. Joseph and Susannah never left Ontario but seven of their eleven children did. Letters is in three parts. Part I has copies of the original letters with printed as written and edited versions annotated to explain what and who Joseph is writing about. Part II is a narrative of the family in England where eight of the eleven children were born, about their immigration and their pioneering in the unsettled Ontario wilderness first in Arthur Township, Waterloo/Wellington Counties and finally in Brant Township, Bruce County. Also included are short synopses of their eleven children. Part III is a three generation modified register genealogy of the family documented with primary source references. The author is indebted to many cousins who are also descendants of Joseph and Susannah and who have contributed information which makes this book more complete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What force of will and circumstance drove a woman from a comfortable life painting china tea services to one of hardship and loneliness in the battle zones of France and Belgium following the Great War? For western Canadian artist Mary Riter Hamilton (1868-1954), art was her life’s passion. Her tale is one of tragedy and adventure, from homestead beginnings, to genteel drawing rooms in Winnipeg, Victoria and Vancouver, to Berlin and Parisian art schools, to Vimy and Ypres, and finally to illness and poverty in old age. No Man’s Land is the first biographical study of Hamilton, whose work can be found in galleries and art museums throughout Canada. Young and McKinnon’s meticulous research in unpublished private collections brings to light new correspondence between Hamilton and her friends, revealing the importance of female networks to an artist’s well being. Her letters from abroad, in particular, bring a woman’s perspective into the immediate post-war period and give voice to trying conditions. Hamilton’s career is situated within the context of her peers Florence Carlyle, Emily Carr, and Sophie Pemberton with whom she shared a Canadian and European experience.

Book Synopsis Lives in Transition by : Peter Baskerville
Download or read book Lives in Transition written by Peter Baskerville and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective histories and broad social change are informed by the ways in which personal lives unfold. Lives in Transition examines individual experiences within such collective histories during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This collection brings together sources from Europe, North America, and Australia in order to advance the field of quantitative longitudinal historical research. The essays examine the lives and movements of various populations over time that were important for Europe and its overseas settlements - including the experience of convicts transported to Australia and Scots who moved freely to New Zealand. The micro-level roots of economic change and social mobility of settler society are analyzed through populations studies of Chicago, Montreal, as well as rural communities in Canada and the United States. Several studies also explore ethnic inequality as experienced by Polish immigrants, French-Canadians, and Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Lives in Transition demonstrates how the analysis of collective experience through both individual-level and large-scale data at different moments in history opens up important avenues for social science and historical research.
