Book Synopsis Indian Muslim Minorities and the 1857 Rebellion by : Ilyse R. Morgenstein Fuerst
Download or read book Indian Muslim Minorities and the 1857 Rebellion written by Ilyse R. Morgenstein Fuerst and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While jihad has been the subject of countless studies in the wake of recent terrorist attacks, scholarship on the topic has so far paid little attention to South Asian Islam and, more specifically, its place in South Asian history. Seeking to fill some gaps in the historiography, Ilyse R. Morgenstein Fuerst examines the effects of the 1857 Rebellion (long taught in Britain as the 'Indian Mutiny') on debates about the issue of jihad during the British Raj. Morgenstein Fuerst shows that the Rebellion had lasting, pronounced effects on the understanding by their Indian subjects (whether Muslim, Hindu or Sikh) of imperial rule by distant outsiders. For India's Muslims their interpretation of the Rebellion as jihad shaped subsequent discourses, definitions and codifications of Islam in the region. Morgenstein Fuerst concludes by demonstrating how these perceptions of jihad, contextualised within the framework of the 19th century Rebellion, continue to influence contemporary rhetoric about Islam and Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.Drawing on extensive primary source analysis, this unique take on Islamic identities in South Asia will be invaluable to scholars working on British colonial history, India and the Raj, as well as to those studying Islam in the region and beyond.

Book Synopsis Religion and Ideology of the Rebels of 1857 by : Iqbal Husain
Download or read book Religion and Ideology of the Rebels of 1857 written by Iqbal Husain and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolt of 1857 was the first and the largest anti-colonial movement to have occurred in South Asia during the nineteenth century. However, the precise nature of that movement is still keenly debated by historians, statesmen and politicians. Sir John Kay and Malleson regarded it as a mutiny, which some Indian historians called it the first war of independence. R. C.Majumdar asserted that it was neither a war of independence nor national in character. Most of these studies, however, rely almost exclusively on official sources that present the imperial point of view. The indigenous perspective, in particular the voice of the rebels, has been ignored in these studies. Departing from the dominant historiography position, Religion and Ideology of the Rebels of 1857 seeks to understand the ideological elements which formed the background to the rebellion and in doing so brings to light largely unexplored sources such as the proclamations of the rebels and their sympathizers and the correspondence they carried out amongst themselves. Written in Urdu and Persian, these sources have generally escaped the attention of historians. Re-interpreting the revolt by concentrating on Delhi, Ruhelkhand and Awadh, the centres of encounters with the English, this volume asserts that 1857 was not a mutiny but involved the masses, making it a national war against an alien ruler. It also suggests that the rebels stress on the unity between the Hindus and Muslims and their joint fight against an alien ruler, paved the way for the emergence of the national struggle for freedom and of a secular India after independence.

Book Synopsis Perspectives in Indian History by : M Jankiraman Ph D
Download or read book Perspectives in Indian History written by M Jankiraman Ph D and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Indian History deals with the history of India from 10,000 BC until 1857 AD. It delves into the story of the Indus-Saraswati civilization and the development of the Vedas. Such a book has been written for the first time, wherein India's history has been analyzed from the early Hindu period. Hitherto most history books have emphasized the Muslim period or the British period. These have been written by Muslim historians or European colonists, which was often skewed by their fundamental bias that no civilization could equal their own. During this retelling, the author covers the interesting aspects of each age starting with the Ramayana. He then examines hotly debated issues like whether Alexander the Great won or lost in India. The author carries out an analysis of the causes of the conquest of India by the Muslims. The author analyses detailed battleplans of major battles, which affected India's history, like Panipat, Plassey, and many others, and discusses the weaponry and tactics used in these wars.
Book Synopsis The Muslims of British India by : Hardy
Download or read book The Muslims of British India written by Hardy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Hardy has attempted a general history of British India's Muslims with a deeper perspective. He shows how the interplay of memories of past Muslim supremacy, Islamic religious aspirations and modern Muslim social and economic anxieties with the political needs of the alien ruling power gradually fostered a separate Muslim politics. Dr Hardy argues (contrary to the usual view) that Muslims were able to take political initiatives because, in the region of modern Uttar Pradesh, British rule before 1857 and even the events of the Mutiny and Rebellion of 1857-8 had not been economically disastrous for most of them. He stresses the force of religion in the growth of Muslim political separatism, showing how the 'modernists' kept the conversation among Muslims within Islamic postulates and underlining the role of the traditional scholars in heightening popular religious feeling. Regarding any sense of Muslim political unity and nationhood as an outcome of the period of British rule, Dr Hardy shows the limitations and frailty of that unity and nationhood by 1947.
Book Synopsis Mutiny at the Margins: New Perspectives on the Indian Uprising Of 1857 by : Crispin Bates

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mutiny at the Margins series takes a fresh look at the Revolt of 1857 from a variety of original and unusual perspectives, focusing in particular on neglected socially marginal groups and geographic areas which have hitherto tended to be unrepresented in studies of this cataclysmic event in British imperial and Indian historiography. Muslim, Dalit and Subaltern Narratives (Volume 5) addresses the role of marginal and Muslim groups respectively, exploring minority perceptions of the Uprising, including Dalit narratives and the use of 1857 in re-imagining the past. The second half of the volume looks into the response and involvement of different Muslim social groups, from civil servants, philosophers and logicians to the Mujahidin, as well as exploring the experience of indigenous participants in their own words.
