Download or read book Hotel Dreams written by Molly W. Berger and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2012 Sally Hacker Prize, Society for the History of Technology Hotel Dreams is a deeply researched and entertaining account of how the hotel's material world of machines and marble integrated into and shaped the society it served. Molly W. Berger offers a compelling history of the American hotel and how it captured the public's imagination as it came to represent the complex—and often contentious—relationship among luxury, economic development, and the ideals of a democratic society. Berger profiles the country's most prestigious hotels, including Boston's 1829 Tremont, San Francisco's world-famous Palace, and Chicago's enormous Stevens. The fascinating stories behind their design, construction, and marketing reveal in rich detail how these buildings became cultural symbols that shaped the urban landscape.

Book excerpt: Exploring the social, economic, and legal impact of the growth of the railroads, Ms. Gordon finds that their accomplishments in drawing together the vast reaches of the union were achieved at high cost. Smaller towns withered as people and money flowed to the larger cities, and the social and economic life of the nation was forever changed. This is an absorbing story of apparent triumph and real loss, drawn from a wide variety of sources.

Book Synopsis The Rise and Fall of Modern Empires, Volume II by : Saul Dubow
Download or read book The Rise and Fall of Modern Empires, Volume II written by Saul Dubow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reproduces key historical texts concerning `colonial knowledges’. The use of the adjective 'colonial' indicates that knowledge is shaped by power relationships, while the use of the plural form, ’knowledges’ indicates the emphasis in this collection is on an interplay between different, often competing, cognitive systems. George Balandier’s notion of the colonial situation is an organising principle that runs throughout the volume, and there are four sub-themes: language and texts, categorical knowledge, the circulation of knowledge and indigenous knowledge. The volume is designed to introduce students to a range of important interventions which speak to each other today, even if they were not intended to do so when first published. An introductory essay links the themes together and explains the significance of the individual articles.

Book Synopsis The Peregrine Profession by : Per-Olof Grönberg
Download or read book The Peregrine Profession written by Per-Olof Grönberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Peregrine Profession Per-Olof Grönberg offers an account of the pre-1930 transnational mobility of engineers and architects educated in the Nordic countries 1880-1919. Outlining a system where learning mobility was more important than labour market mobility, the author shows that more than every second graduate went abroad. Transnational mobility was stronger from Finland and Norway than from Denmark and Sweden, partly because of slower industrialisation and deficiencies in the domestic technical education. This mobility included all parts of the world but concentrated on the leading industrial countries in German speaking Europe and North America. Significant majorities returned and became agents of technology transfer and technical change. Thereby, these mobile graduates also became important for Nordic industrialisation

Book Synopsis Western Ways by : Frederick Whitling
Download or read book Western Ways written by Frederick Whitling and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western Ways, for the first time, the "foreign schools" in Rome and Athens, institutions dealing primarily with classical archaeology and art history, are discussed in historical terms as vehicles and figureheads of national scholarship. By emphasising the agency and role of individuals in relation to structures and tradition, the book shows how much may be gained by examining science and politics as two sides of the same coin. It sheds light on the scholarly organisation of foreign schools, and through them, on the organisation of classical archaeology and classical studies around the Mediterranean. With its breadth and depth of archival resources, Western Ways offers new perspectives on funding, national prestige and international collaboration in the world of scholarship, and places the foreign schools in a framework of nineteenth and twentieth century Italian and Greek history.
