Download or read book The Legal Framework for International Economic Relations written by Paul J. Davidson and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1997 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International economic law on the one hand and national economic laws and policies on the other, form the borderlines of the "playing ground" within which the design for closer economic cooperation can be drawn. Before anything can be done, it is of utmost importance to know and study these "borderlines". This book is an attempt to set out the "borderlines" not only for intra-ASEAN economic co-operation but also for economic cooperation between that region and Canada by considering the legal framework for international economic relations within ASEAN and between ASEAN and Canada.

Book Synopsis China in India's Post-Cold War Engagement with Southeast Asia by : Chietigj Bajpaee
Download or read book China in India's Post-Cold War Engagement with Southeast Asia written by Chietigj Bajpaee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of China in driving and sustaining India’s post-Cold War engagement with Southeast Asia. In doing so, it provides a unique insight into the regional dimensions of the Sino-Indian relationship. India launched its Look East Policy in the early 1990s as part of a concerted effort to revive the importance of Southeast Asia in the country’s foreign policy agenda. This study assesses the role of the China factor – defined here as China’s regional role, which has been interpreted through the prism of the Sino-Indian relationship – in the inception and evolution of the policy. More specifically, it establishes the extent to which China has been raised as a priority in discourses of India’s Look East Policy and how this has varied over time from the origins of the policy through to the most recent phase of the renamed Act East Policy. Addressing the distinction between what policymakers signal in their official statements and their true or underlying motivations, the book alludes to the fact that government officials may not always reflect true intentions in their official statements, and it is often what is not said that may reveal more about their real motivations. This is particularly relevant in the context of the Sino-Indian relationship where diplomatic rhetoric often masks more competitive and confrontational aspects of the bilateral relationship. An important analysis of the interplay between India’s relations with Southeast Asia and China, this book will be of interest to academics, policymakers and students in the fields of International Relations, Asian Security, Southeast Asian politics, and in particular, Indian foreign policy, the Sino-Indian relationship, and India’s Look East/Act East Policy.

Book Synopsis Managing Great Power Politics by : Kei Koga
Download or read book Managing Great Power Politics written by Kei Koga and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book explains ASEAN’s strategic role in managing great power politics in East Asia. Constructing a theory of institutional strategy, this book argues that the regional security institutions in Southeast Asia, ASEAN and ASEAN-led institutions have devised their own institutional strategies vis-à-vis the South China Sea and navigated the great-power politics since the 1990s. ASEAN proliferated new security institutions in the 1990s and 2000s that assumed a different functionality, a different geopolitical scope, and thus a different institutional strategy. In so doing, ASEAN formed a “strategic institutional web” that nurtured a quasi-division of labor among the institutions to maintain relative stability in the South China Sea. Unlike the conventional analysis on ASEAN, this study disaggregates “ASEAN” as a collective regional actor into specific individual institutions—ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, ASEAN Summit, ASEAN-China dialogues, ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Summit, and ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting and ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting-Plus—and explains how each of these institutions has devised and/or shifted its institutional strategy to curb great powers’ ambition in dominating the South China Sea while navigating great power competition. The book sheds light on the strategic potential and limitations of ASEAN and ASEAN-led security institutions, offers implications for the future role of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific region, and provides an alternative understanding of the strategic utilities of regional security institutions.
Download or read book ASEAN written by Paul J. Davidson and published by Cavendish Square Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various steps that ASEAN has taken towards economic cooperation within the region and examines them in the context of the developing legal framework as affected by economic and political developments. Also dealt with are the various mechanisms for dispute resolution available in intra-ASEAN economic relations. In international law, a hierarchy of legal frameworks exists, and regional frameworks must accord with broader, multilateral frameworks of which participants are also members. This book therefore examines how ASEAN fits within the existing multilateral international framework for trade and investment. Further to this, the author analyzes on the one hand, the role of the sub-regional "Growth Triangles" in this emerging legal framework, and on the other hand, the movements towards broader economic cooperation in the larger region, like the proposals for the East Asian Economic Caucus (EAEC) and for the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Book Synopsis Asean 50: Regional Security Cooperation Through Selected Documents by : Daniel Wei Boon Chua
Download or read book Asean 50: Regional Security Cooperation Through Selected Documents written by Daniel Wei Boon Chua and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASEAN 50: Regional Security Cooperation through Selected Documents curates key official documents that establish ASEAN as the foundation of Southeast Asia's peace and security. Since 1967, ASEAN has played the crucial role of managing conflicts and maintaining stability in a region shaped by diverse political, economic and socio-cultural dynamics. During the Cold War, ASEAN's ability to keep major power rivalries and intra-mural disputes in check provided the conditions for economic growth in the region. Yet the extent of ASEAN's contributions to the security of Southeast Asia have not been systematically presented. This compendium of official ASEAN declarations, statements, treaties, conventions and workplans demonstrates the activism and innovation of ASEAN member countries in their management of regional security for the past five decades. ASEAN 50: Regional Security Cooperation through Selected Documents provides answers to how ASEAN remains a cohesive organisation through periods of regional conflict, how ASEAN unity thrives despite seemingly insurmountable differences among the ten members, and how ASEAN centrality is resilient against pressure arising from great power influences in Southeast Asia.
