Download or read book Rebirth written by James Alan Anderson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like a phoenix, the twins Kevin and Robert and their younger brother Jonah, experience a rebirth after they barely survive the catastrophic house fire that killed their father and older brother. Now is their chance to start fresh in a new town with a loving adoptive family. The boys thrive in their new home, and they experience many of the typical ups and downs of a “normal” childhood in the 1950s. They are free of the abuses and draconian restrictions that their late father visited upon them after he became obsessed with the fanatical doctrines of the Radio Church of God. Kevin soon makes a desperate attempt to prevent a large family from falling victim to that abusive religious cult. The brothers can now freely pursue their own interests, the most alluring of which, are fledgling romantic relationships. Kevin gets bitten by the technology bug, and he starts building a number of electronic projects including a vacuum tube shortwave transmitter. But the boys’ new life is tarnished when ominous vaguely written letters start to arrive at their new home that seemingly blame them for the house fire that resulted in the deaths of their father and older sibling. Although the boys bravely try to get on with their lives, their world soon comes crashing down when an unknown enemy decides it is time to take retribution on them for a sin they did not commit. Rebirth is the second book in the Threefold Cord series that follows the lives of the three young brothers who have developed an unbreakable bond with one another. A combination of nostalgia, youthful adventures, misadventures, and intrigue, this book is a delightful mix of genres that will keep readers entertained and enthralled until the last page.

Download or read book Lessons in Life written by Dorian Heroman and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sixth grade, every child was musically tested to try to grow the marching bands in high school. I wanted to play a saxophone. The band directors wanted me to carry a tuba (since I was one of the bigger children). I compromised (to myself) and got a friend in junior high to teach me to play drums whereupon my parents fretted that I would do drugs. I surprised them by playing in rock and roll bands for about seven years. My first big project as a structural engineer was the inner dome to Space Mountain for the Buena Vista Corporation in a place called Kissimmee, Florida. As a project engineer, I learned to coordinate designs for constructors to build. My dad thought I would be an architect since I liked to draw. (In my hometown's phone directory, there were two pages of architects but only a third of a page of civil-structural engineers. Easy decision.) I have enjoyed stories from firemen I have associated with. They can be very humorous. I have enjoyed Justin Wilson's stories and Jerry Clower's funny wit. God bless them. I wish they were still alive so I could autograph my book for them like they did for me. Not that this is on their level, but I try to present my life stories to entertain and just make the reader feel good, have some memories, and smile.
Book Synopsis Color Stories by : JeffriAnne Wilder
Download or read book Color Stories written by JeffriAnne Wilder and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth sociological exploration of present-day colorism in the lives of black women, investigating the lived experiences of a phenomenon that continues to affect women of African descent. Race still matters. And for black women, the related issues of skin tone are just as important today as in decades past. Part cultural commentary, part empirical analysis, this book offers a compelling study and discussion of colorism—a widely discussed but understudied issue in "post-racial" America—that demonstrates how powerful a factor skin color remains in the everyday lives of young black women. Author JeffriAnne Wilder conducted interviews with dozens of young black women about the role of colorism in their everyday lives. Collectively, these findings offer a compelling empirical and theoretical analysis of colorism in key areas of 21st-century life, including within family and school settings, in the media, and in intimate relationships. The culmination of nearly two decades of the author's deep entrenchment in colorism studies, Color Stories: Black Women and Colorism in the 21st Century provides a new perspective on a controversial issue that has been a part of black culture and academic study for generations by exploring how the contemporary nature of colorism—from Facebook to the First Lady to Beyoncé—impacts the ideas and experiences of black women. This work serves as essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about the historical and contemporary significance of colorism in modern-day America, regardless of the reader's race, sex, or age.
Book Synopsis The Pursuit of Happiness by : Bianca C. Williams
Download or read book The Pursuit of Happiness written by Bianca C. Williams and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Pursuit of Happiness Bianca C. Williams traces the experiences of African American women as they travel to Jamaica, where they address the perils and disappointments of American racism by looking for intimacy, happiness, and a connection to their racial identities. Through their encounters with Jamaican online communities and their participation in trips organized by Girlfriend Tours International, the women construct notions of racial, sexual, and emotional belonging by forming relationships with Jamaican men and other "girlfriends." These relationships allow the women to exercise agency and find happiness in ways that resist the damaging intersections of racism and patriarchy in the United States. However, while the women require a spiritual and virtual connection to Jamaica in order to live happily in the United States, their notion of happiness relies on travel, which requires leveraging their national privilege as American citizens. Williams's theorization of "emotional transnationalism" and the construction of affect across diasporic distance attends to the connections between race, gender, and affect while highlighting how affective relationships mark nationalized and gendered power differentials within the African diaspora.
