This volume derives directly from the presentations at the symposium. The University of Surrey, which is located in Guildford, Surrey, provided a congenial atmosphere for this conference and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the local organizing committee and especially Dr. G. Gordon Gibson, for all their efforts in both scientific and social arrangements. Special thanks are extended also to the graduate students of the Biochemistry Department (especially Ms. Tricia Breacker and Mr. Paul Tamburini) and to the conference secretaries who unstintingly gave of their time in a variety of roles to ensure the smooth functioning of the symposium. We wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the distinguished scientists who agreed to chair the sessions of the symposium: A. Hildebrandt (BRD), H. Remmer (BRD), L. Goldberg (USA), S. Orrenius (Sweden), H. Uehleke (BRD), J.R. Gillette (USA), C. Netter (BRD), M. Mercier (Belgium), F. Oesch (BRD), E. Boyland (UK), J.E. Gibson (USA), C.D. Klaassen (USA) and J.W. Gorrod (UK). The mounting of a large scale international symposium is fraught with many impediments, not the least of which are the financial and logistical problems of assembling a group of internationally distinguished scientists in one place at the same time. Success in such endeavors requires concerned and active sponsors. The three sponsoring

Book Synopsis Introduction to Drug Metabolism by : G. Gordon Gibson
Download or read book Introduction to Drug Metabolism written by G. Gordon Gibson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the scientific literature on drug metabolism is extensive, it suffers from the disadvantage that the material is diffuse and consists largely of specialist monographs dealing with particular aspects of the subject. In addi tion, although there are a few excellent texts on drug metabolism in print, these tend to be earlier publications and hence do not take into account the many recent advances in this area. Our motivations for writing this book therefore arose from the clear need for a recent and cohesive introductory text on this subject, specifically designed to cater for the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Much of the subject matter in this text is derived from various courses on drug metabolism given at the University of Surrey and the University of Glasgow to basic science students in pharmacology, biochemistry, nutrition and nursing studies, to pre-clinical medical students and to under graduate and post-graduate students in toxicology. Therefore, it is our inten tion that this text will serve as a primer in drug metabolism to a variety of students in the life sciences taking courses in this subject. The term 'drug metabolism' in its broadest sense may be considered as the absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs. To cover all these facets of drug metabolism in a single text is a voluminous task and therefore we have focused primarily on the biotransformation aspects of the subject.
Book Synopsis Mechanism and Theory in Food Chemistry, Second Edition by : Dominic W.S. Wong
Download or read book Mechanism and Theory in Food Chemistry, Second Edition written by Dominic W.S. Wong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in over twenty-five years, this unique and popular textbook on food chemistry mechanism and theory has received a full update. Emphasizing the underlying chemical reactions and interactions that occur in foods during processing and storage, this book unifies the themes of "what", "how" and "why" in the language of equations, reactions and mechanisms. This book is the only work which provides in-depth focus on aspects of reaction mechanisms and theories in the chemistry of food and food systems. With more than 500 chemical equations and figures, this book provides unusual clarity and relevance, and fills a significant gap in food chemistry literature. It is a definitive source to consult regarding the important mechanisms that make food components and reactions tick. Mechanism and Theory in Food Chemistry has been a popular resource for students and researchers alike since its publication in 1989. This important new edition contains updates on the original text encompassing a quarter century of advances in food chemistry. Many parts of the original chapters are revised to make for smoother navigation through the subjects, to better explain the underlying chemistry concepts and to fulfill the need of adding topics of emerging importance. New sections on fatty acids, lipid oxidation, meat, milk, soybean and wheat proteins, starch and many more have been incorporated throughout the revision. This updated edition provides an excellent source of all the important chemical mechanisms and theories involved with food science.

Book excerpt: Biochemistry: The Chemical Reactions of Living Cells is a well-integrated, up-to-date reference for basic chemistry and underlying biological phenomena. Biochemistry is a comprehensive account of the chemical basis of life, describing the amazingly complex structures of the compounds that make up cells, the forces that hold them together, and the chemical reactions that allow for recognition, signaling, and movement. This book contains information on the human body, its genome, and the action of muscles, eyes, and the brain. * Thousands of literature references provide introduction to current research as well as historical background * Contains twice the number of chapters of the first edition * Each chapter contains boxes of information on topics of general interest
Book Synopsis Aromatic C-nitroso Compounds by : Hrvoj Vančik
Download or read book Aromatic C-nitroso Compounds written by Hrvoj Vančik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to collect and review the research covering main directions in investigations of aromatic nitroso compounds in last decades, and to present both, the academic aspects of this chemistry, as well as the open field of its applicability. The book is divided in five chapters. The basic structural properties of the nitroso aromatic molecules are described in the first chapter. The second chapter is an overview of the methods of preparations of aromatic nitroso and polynitroso compounds, including classical synthetic methods and some new preparative approaches. The third part deals with the physico-chemical properties of nitroso aromates and azodioxides, its structure, crystallography, quantum chemical calculations, spectroscopy, typical reactions, and especially it is focused on the dimerizations in the solid-state. In the fourth chapter is represented organometallic chemistry of nitroso aromatic molecules and its applications in catalysis. The last part of the book deals with the behavior of this class of compounds in the biological systems, reactions with biomolecules and the use in toxicology.
