Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bilingual series Flower World - Music Archaeology of the Americas raises the study of ancient music and music-related activities of the pre-Columbian Americas to the next level. For the first time in the history of science, a series offering anthologies featuring scientific investigations in this fascinating multidisciplinary field is available. The series encompasses peer-reviewed studies by renowned scholars on both past and living music traditions from South, Central and North America, and thus constitute a platform for the most up-to-date information on the music archaeology of the continent. It features case studies and the results of research projects in the field, in which a great variety of music-archaeological approaches, such as conventional archaeology - for the interpretation of the find contexts, experimental archaeology - for reconstructive instrument making and playing, ethnohistory and ethnolinguistics - for the interpretation of textual sources, music iconology - for the interpretation if visual sources, organology and acoustics, and ethnomusicology - for the research on contemporary legacies - for the study of the instrument finds, are commonly applied. The title of the series, Flower World, refers to a mythological, even sacred place filled with the sweet scent of flowers, bird calls, pleasant sounds, and dance. It is a place full of happiness and joy, even if it belongs to the realm of the Dead, which sustains the enduring renewal of life on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photo-illustrated record of Chilean protest art, along with reflections on artistic antecedents, global protest movements, and the long shadow cast by Chile’s authoritarian past. From October 2019 until the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Chile was convulsed by protests and political upheaval, as what began as civil disobedience transformed into a vast resistance movement. Throughout, the most striking aspects of the protests were the murals, graffiti, and other political graphics that became ubiquitous in Chilean cities. Authors Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov were in Santiago to witness and document the protests from their very beginning. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 150 photographs taken throughout the protests. Additional photos will be available on the publisher’s website. From the introduction: In the conclusion, we take stock of the crisis of the nation-state in the contemporary era. This chapter brings events into the present moment, noting the ways President Piñera took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to reclaim the streets of Santiago, a phenomenon echoed in countries across the globe. While most of the global protest movements were forced to go underground (or into the ether), the Black Lives Matter movement surged in the United States and drew massive amounts of support both domestically and abroad, suggesting a continued wave of grassroots protests. We close with reflections on the continued relevance of walls in a virtual world, the testimonial role that protest graphics play, and the future outlook for revolutionary movements in Chile and worldwide.

This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a classic in the history of art. In it François Baschet recounts the research and creation of his Sound Sculptures, with which he began a pioneering career combining art and science, sculpture and music. The willingness to share his findings inspired another breakthrough: participatory exhibitions, spaces where everyone could explore and play with sound. François Baschets conception of acousticsa method of understanding the functional relations between form, matter, action and soundnot only gave rise to the invention of hundreds of Sound Sculptures of all sizes and sonority, which can be found all over the world, but also led François and his brother to collaborate with personalities such as Jean Cocteau, Pierre Schaeffer and ToruTakemitsu. François Baschet relates a funny collection of stories about the artistic life in Paris and New York in 40s and 60s. This reissue of The Sound Sculptures of Bernard and François Baschet includes fragments still unpublished when the first edition appeared, and incorporates the original text of the Organologie des Structures Sonores Baschet (written by the two brothers), with Spanish translations.
