Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hastily built at the onset of World War II to stop German U-boats from taking their toll on Allied shipping, the 110-foot wooden subchasers were the smallest commissioned warships in the U.S. Navy, yet they saw as much action as ships ten times their size. In every theater of war these “expendable” workhorses of the fleet escorted countless convoys of slow-moving ships through submarine-infested waters, conducted endless mind-numbing antisubmarine patrols, and were used in hundreds of amphibious operations. Some subchasers worked as gunboats to search for and destroy enemy barges. Others rescued downed airmen and retrieved drowning soldiers under heavy enemy fire. During the German occupation of Norway, three American-built subchasers and their Norwegian crews came to be known as “The Shetlands Bus” for their clandestine work as ferries—the only link between Norway and the free world. This book, written by the commander of one of the subchasers, defines their place in naval history and gives readers a taste of life on board the wooden warships. Ringing with authenticity, it describes the cramped quarters and unforgiving seas as well as the tenacious courage and close bonds formed by the men as they sought out the enemy and confronted nature. Long overshadowed by the larger, faster warships and more glamorous PT boats of World War II, subchasers have been mostly forgotten. This work restores the plucky little ships to their hard-earned status as significant members of the fleet.
Book Synopsis Us Submarine Chaser 38 in World War I by : Kathryn W. Lerch

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine chaser SC 38 was a heavily armed miniature warship. Its crew saw a bit of everything, from hunting U-boats on the barrage lines, to shooting mines in the North Sea. The book "US Submarine Chaser 38 in World War I", tells the story of this chaser and its crew. Photos, letters, and personal accounts from the collection of GM1c Raymond Featherstone, Sr., bring his experiences alive, and in the biographies of the other crewmen we see a great little slice of history, as WWI intersects the lives of so many men: where they came from, and what brought them across the Atlantic Ocean and into the path of U-boats on a 110-foot wooden motorboat.

Download or read book Subchaser written by Edward P Stafford and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a wartime Navy of giant carriers and battleships, tiny wooden subchasers did not command much attention. Yet these 110-foot warships, manned mostly by inexperienced reservists, performed vital chores for the fleet everywhere there was action in World War II. They led landing craft right up to the assault beaches, protected them from fire, fought off air attacks, swept for mines, laid down smoke screens, and patrolled the sea for killer submarines. One such doughty little ship, subchaser 692, is the subject of this book. Told by 692's commanding officer Ed Stafford, then a twenty-four-year-old lieutenant (jg) on his first warship, the story follows the thirty-man crew as they scrapped their way through the war, including action during the July 1943 invasion of Sicily. Filled with humor, tension, poignancy, and moments of high drama, this volume leaves today's readers with a vivid image of life on a very small ship in a very big war.

Book Synopsis The Physicists by : Daniel J. Kevles
Download or read book The Physicists written by Daniel J. Kevles and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magnificent account of the coming of age of physics in America has been heralded as the best introduction to the history of science in the United States. Unsurpassed in its breadth and literary style, Kevles's account portrays the brilliant scientists who became a powerful force in bringing the world into a revolutionary new era. The book ranges widely as it links these exciting developments to the social, cultural, and political changes that occurred from the post-Civil War years to the present. Throughout, Kevles keeps his eye on the central question of how an avowedly elitist enterprise grew and prospered in a democratic culture. In this new edition, the author has brought the story up to date by providing an extensive, authoritative, and colorful account of the Superconducting Super Collider, from its origins in the international competition and intellectual needs of high-energy particle physics, through its establishment as a multibillion-dollar project, to its termination, in 1993, as a result of angry opposition within the American physics community and the Congress.
