Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (GR10) was held from July 3 to July 8, 1983, in Padova, Italy. These Conferences take place every three years, under the auspices of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, with the purpose of assessing the current research in the field, critically discussing the prog ress made and disclosing the points of paramount im portance which deserve further investigations. The Conference was attended by about 750 scientists active in the various subfields in which the current research on gravitation and general relativity is ar ticulated, and more than 450 communications were sub mitted. In order to fully exploit this great occur rence of experience and creative capacity, and to pro mote individual contributions to the collective know ledge, the Conference was given a structure of work shops on the most active topics and of general sessions in which the Conference was addressed by invited speakers on general reviews or recent major advance ments of the field. The individual communications were collected in a two-volume publication made available to the participants upon their arrival and widely distributed to Scientific Institutions and Research Centres.

Book Synopsis The Kalam Cosmological Argument, Volume 2 by : Paul Copan
Download or read book The Kalam Cosmological Argument, Volume 2 written by Paul Copan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient kalam cosmological argument maintains that the series of past events is finite and that therefore the universe began to exist. Two recent scientific discoveries have yielded plausible prima facie physical evidence for the beginning of the universe. The expansion of the universe points to its beginning-to a Big Bang-as one retraces the universe's expansion in time. And the second law of thermodynamics, which implies that the universe's energy is progressively degrading, suggests that the universe began with an initial low entropy condition. The kalam cosmological argument-perhaps the most discussed philosophical argument for God's existence in recent decades-maintains that whatever begins to exist must have a cause. And since the universe began to exist, there must be a transcendent cause of its beginning, a conclusion which is confirmatory of theism. So this medieval argument for the finitude of the past has received fresh wind in its sails from recent scientific discoveries. This collection reviews and assesses the merits of the latest scientific evidences for the universe's beginning. It ends with the kalam argument's conclusion that the universe has a cause-a personal cause with properties of theological significance.
Book Synopsis The Quantum Labyrinth by : D.J. Hoekzema
Download or read book The Quantum Labyrinth written by D.J. Hoekzema and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of the research leading to this book I held a position somewhere close to 'the standard Copenhagen interpretation' of QM. I was strongly attracted to, in particular, the philosophy of Niels Bohr. However, being aware of some of the problematic sides and ambiguities of his views and of new developments which have taken place in QM after his time, the main challenge would be to develop a more up to date version version of his approach and express it in a philosophically unobjectionable way. Traces of this original attitude can still be found in views I hold nowadays. For instance, I think that I now know a satisfactory and correct way of dealing with features like 'complementarity', and I still see this as a relevant subject. In many other respects, however, there have been major changes in my position. In fact, during certain stages of my research my views simply started moving and kept on doing so at an irritating pace and for uncomfortably long periods of time. I learned, for example that at least some of the classical ideas about theory structure are much better than I had realized, and cannot just be pushed aside for anything even as impressive as empirical success.

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics written by Ajoy Ghatak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-31 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of quantum mechanics is vital to all students of physics, chemistry and electrical engineering, but requires a lot of mathematical concepts, the details of which are given with great clarity in this book. Various concepts have been derived from first principles, so it can also be used for self-study. The chapters on the JWKB approximation, time-independent perturbation theory and effects of magnetic field stand out for their clarity and easy-to-understand mathematics. Two complete chapters on the linear harmonic oscillator provide a very detailed discussion of one of the most fundamental problems in quantum mechanics. Operator algebra is used to show the ease with which one can calculate the harmonic oscillator wave functions and study the evolution of the coherent state. Similarly, three chapters on angular momentum give a detailed account of this important problem. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the book is the excellent balance between theory and applications and the large number of applications in such diverse areas as astrophysics, nuclear physics, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid-state physics, and quantum well structures.
Book Synopsis Current Research in Operational Quantum Logic by : Bob Coecke
Download or read book Current Research in Operational Quantum Logic written by Bob Coecke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume has its origins in a pair of informal workshops held at the Free University of Brussels, in June of 1998 and May of 1999, named "Current Research 1 in Operational Quantum Logic". These brought together mathematicians and physicists working in operational quantum logic and related areas, as well as a number of interested philosophers of science, for a rare opportunity to discuss recent developments in this field. After some discussion, it was decided that, rather than producing a volume of conference proceedings, we would try to organize the conferees to produce a set of comprehensive survey papers, which would not only report on recent developments in quantum logic, but also provide a tutorial overview of the subject suitable for an interested non-specialist audience. The resulting volume provides an overview of the concepts and methods used in current research in quantum logic, viewed both as a branch of mathemati cal physics and as an area of pure mathematics. The first half of the book is concerned with the algebraic side of the subject, and in particular the theory of orthomodular lattices and posets, effect algebras, etc. In the second half of the book, special attention is given to categorical methods and to connections with theoretical computer science. At the 1999 workshop, we were fortunate to hear three excellent lectures by David J. Foulis, represented here by two contributions. Dave's work, spanning 40 years, has helped to define, and continues to reshape, the field of quantum logic.
Book Synopsis Lagrange and Finsler Geometry by : P.L. Antonelli
Download or read book Lagrange and Finsler Geometry written by P.L. Antonelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differential geometry of a regular Lagrangian is more involved than that of classical kinetic energy and consequently is far from being Riemannian. Nevertheless, such geometries are playing an increasingly important role in a wide variety of problems in fields ranging from relativistic optics to ecology. The present collection of papers will serve to bring the reader up-to-date on the most recent advances. Subjects treated include higher order Lagrange geometry, the recent theory of -Lagrange manifolds, electromagnetic theory and neurophysiology. Audience: This book is recommended as a (supplementary) text in graduate courses in differential geometry and its applications, and will also be of interest to physicists and mathematical biologists.
Book Synopsis Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics by : Byung Chan Eu
Download or read book Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics written by Byung Chan Eu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is developed by means of ensemble methods on the basis of the Boltzmann equation, the generic Boltzmann equations for classical and quantum dilute gases, and a generalised Boltzmann equation for dense simple fluids. The theories are developed in forms parallel with the equilibrium Gibbs ensemble theory in a way fully consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. The generalised hydrodynamics equations are the integral part of the theory and describe the evolution of macroscopic processes in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics of systems far removed from equilibrium. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, gas dynamics, fluid dynamics, rheology, irreversible thermodynamics and nonequilibrium phenomena.
Book Synopsis Deformed Spacetime by : Fabio Cardone
Download or read book Deformed Spacetime written by Fabio Cardone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed discussion of the mathematical aspects and physical applications of a new geometrical structure of space-time, based on a generalization ("deformation") of the usual Minkowski space, as supposed to be endowed with a metric whose coefficients depend on the energy. This new five-dimensional scheme (Deformed Relativity in Five Dimensions, DR5) represents a true generalization of the usual Kaluza-Klein (KK) formalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rationale for the Present Book Perhaps the most critical problem facing present-day particle physicistsis to delineate the relationship between classical and quantum systems. This relationship has many facets. Particle-waveduality is one. The concept of the point particle is another. And theconcept of particle mass is yet another. The electron, as the lightest of the charged particles, represents a fundamental "ground state",and many of the essential problems in the murky area between the domainsofclassical and quantum physics can be brought into focus by studyingjust this one particle. Thus the present book is centered on questions that arise in connection with the electron, and in particular with its mass, which has remained an unsolved, and indeed almost unexplored, mystery. Each student ofphysics, beginner and professional alike, has to fashion for himselfa way of thinking about the electron. If, after reading this book, the reader views this topic somewhat differently than before, the efforts of the author will have been amply rewarded. When physicists were confronted with the properties of the electron, they made a conceptualleap into the unknown: they concluded that the electron does not obey classical laws with respect to mechanics (as connected to the spin of the electron), and also with respect to electrodynamics (as connected to the magnetic moment of the electron).
Book Synopsis Information Dynamics in Cognitive, Psychological, Social, and Anomalous Phenomena by : Andrei Y. Khrennikov
Download or read book Information Dynamics in Cognitive, Psychological, Social, and Anomalous Phenomena written by Andrei Y. Khrennikov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we develop various mathematical models of information dynamics, I -dynamics (including the process of thinking), based on methods of classical and quantum physics. The main aim of our investigations is to describe mathematically the phenomenon of consciousness. We would like to realize a kind of Newton-Descartes program (corrected by the lessons of statistical and quantum mechanics) for information processes. Starting from the ideas of Newton and Descartes, in physics there was developed an adequate description of the dynamics of material systems. We would like to develop an analogous mathematical formalism for information and, in particular, mental processes. At the beginning of the 21st century it is clear that it would be impossible to create a deterministic model for general information processes. A deterministic model has to be completed by a corresponding statistical model of information flows and, in particular, flows of minds. It might be that such an information statistical model should have a quantum-like structure.

Book Synopsis Precisely Predictable Dirac Observables by : Heinz Otto Cordes
Download or read book Precisely Predictable Dirac Observables written by Heinz Otto Cordes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-01-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a Clean Quantum Theory of the Electron, based on Dirac’s equation. "Clean" in the sense of a complete mathematical explanation of the well known paradoxes of Dirac’s theory and a connection to classical theory. It discusses the existence of an accurate split between physical states belonging to the electron and to the positron as well as the fact that precisely predictable observables must preserve this split.
