Book excerpt: Inspired by Jami Attenberg’s wildly popular literary movement #1000WordsofSummer, this writer’s guide features encouraging essays on creativity, productivity, and writing from acclaimed authors including Roxane Gay, Lauren Groff, Celeste Ng, Meg Wolitzer, and Carmen Maria Machado. In 2018, novelist Jami Attenberg, faced with a looming deadline, needed writing inspiration. Using a bootcamp model, she and a friend set out to write one thousand words daily for two weeks straight. They opened this practice to Attenberg’s online community and soon hundreds then thousands of people started using the #1000WordsofSummer hashtag to track their work and support one another. What began as a simple challenge between two friends has become a literary movement—write 1,000 words per day without judgment, or bias, or concerns about writer’s block, and see what comes of it. 1000 Words is the book-length extension of this movement. It is about becoming—and staying—motivated, discovering yourself and your creative desires, and approaching your craft from a new direction. It features advice from more than fifty well-known writers, including New York Times bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize winners, and stars of the literary world. Framing these letters are words of wisdom and encouragement, plus specific strategies, from Attenberg on how to carve out a creative path for yourself all year round. Paired with vibrant word art illustrations, 1000 Words is an accessible and motivational craft book that allows you to open any page and get a quick and fulfilling hit of inspiration. Featuring Roxane Gay, Bryan Washington, Susan Orlean, Maris Kreizman, Sara Novic, Rumaan Alam, Lauren Oyler, Emma Straub, Christopher Gonzales, Benjamin Percy, Mira Jacob, Laura van den Berg, Carmen Maria Machado, Courtney Sullivan, Rebecca Carroll, Ada Limon, R.O. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Chinese learners find it difficult to learn English words: they are difficult to spell and say, change forms from noun to adjective to verb, have multiple meanings and are tricky to remember. This book suggests ways that teachers can help their students to learn English words. A problem frequently reported by Chinese learners is that they are unable to pronounce words that they have met in written contexts. They say their teachers have seldom taught them how to say the new words they find in their textbooks. Research has shown that if Chinese learners are taught the pronunciation of new words when they first meet them, the words are easier to learn. Another problem is knowing when and how to use words accurately in the right context, with the appropriate level of formality. Harsh Words provides a theoretical background explaining how words are learned and then focuses on the Chinese learner in particular. It covers vocabulary learning strategies, learning words in isolation as well as in context, testing vocabulary, common Chinese errors with words, and vocabulary activities to use in class. One chapter deals with the use of IT in vocabulary development and suggests web sites and software that teachers may want to use with their students. Each chapter contains tasks and revision questions while an answer key is provided at the end. The book is written for teachers, whether training to be English teachers or taking refresher courses, postgraduate diplomas or Master's. While much of the content is applicable to all levels of learners, teachers in secondary schools and universities will find it most useful.

Book excerpt: The rich variety of the English vocabulary reflects the vast number of words it has taken from other languages. These range from Latin, Greek, Scandinavian, Celtic, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian to, among others, Hebrew, Maori, Malay, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, andYiddish. Philip Durkin's full and accessible history reveals how, when, and why. He shows how to discover the origins of loanwords, when and why they were adopted, and what happens to them once they have been. The long documented history of English includes contact with languages in a variety of contexts, including: the dissemination of Christian culture in Latin in Anglo-Saxon England, and the interactions of French, Latin, Scandinavian, Celtic, and English during the Middle Ages; exposure to languages throughout the world during the colonial era; and the effects of using English as an international language of science. Philip Durkin describes these and other historical inputs, introducing the approaches each requires, from the comparative method for the earliest period to documentary and corpus research in the modern. The discussion is illustrated at every point with examples taken from a variety of different sources. The framework Dr Durkin develops can be used to explore lexical borrowing in any language. This outstanding book is for everyone interested in English etymology and in loanwords more generally. It will appeal to a wide general public and at the same time offers a valuable reference for scholars and students of the history of English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corpus linguistics is a research method which draws on authentic language examples, collected and organized into 'corpora', or searchable 'bodies' of data. The method was established in the 1960s, and has rapidly developed since then. Now in its second edition, this book provides a step-by-step guide on how to create and analyze linguistic corpora. It has been extensively updated to reflect the most recent developments in this ever-evolving field, and now covers the empirical foundation of corpus-based research, new methodological considerations that guide the creation of a corpus, new kinds of research that can be conducted on corpora, and the most up-to-date information on how qualitative and quantitative analyses of corpora are conducted. Theoretical approaches are introduced in an accessible, easy-to-read way, and the book is illustrated with a wide range of different linguistic corpora, making it essential reading for researchers and students in a number of subfields of linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Envisioned as a much needed celebration of the massive strides made in translation and interpreting studies, this eclectic volume takes stock of the latest cutting-edge research that exemplifies how translation and interpreting might interact with such topics as power, ideological discourse, representation, hegemony and identity. In this exciting volume, we have articles from different language combinations (e.g. Arabic, English, Hungarian and Chinese) and from a wide range of sociopolitical, cultural, and institutional contexts and geographical locales (China, Iran, Malaysia, Russia and Nigeria). Those chapters also draw on a diverse range of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches (e.g. critical discourse analysis, Bourdieu’s sociological theories, corpus linguistics, narrative theory and structuration theory), focusing on translation and interpreting relating to various settings and specialised genres (traditional media, digital media, subtitling, manga, etc.). As such, this volume serves as a dynamic forum for intercultural and interlingual communication and an exciting arena for interdisciplinary dialogues, thus enabling us to look beyond the traditionally more static, mechanical and linguistics-oriented views of translation and interpreting. This book appeals to scholars and students interested in translation and interpreting studies and issues of power, ideology, identity in interlingual and intercultural communication.
