Book excerpt: You can teach your kids many facts about Ancient Roman history and culture by reading about the Roman gods. They were very popular and worshiped by all the people in the world. It was not unusual to find temples dedicated to them in the ruins of the Forum. They were also known for being very skilled fighters. The emperors became gods as well. They were the most powerful people in the world.Unlike today, the Roman family was headed by the father, who had all the power, but the wife still had a large say in family matters. Wealthy families sent their children to school and had them taught reading, writing, mathematics, literature, debate, and art. The poor children were not sent to school and had to make do with what they had. The rich kids went to public schools and were taught the skills necessary for leading a household, while the poor children were kept out.The Romans had couches in their homes. They sat on their left arm and ate. In the Colosseum, women washed their clothes in the Tiber. Their wealth also meant that they had access to a lot of things that we take for granted. For example, the Colosseum had an eight hundred-seat theatre and a 1,000 drinking fountains. In ancient times, men had iron helmets, while women had wooden shields and bare arms.

Book excerpt: Discover how humans created their world from the objects they left behind - from the US Constitution to the first iPhone - in DK's latest history ebook. From the beginning of human history, the one thing that has defined us is our talent for making things, from basic technology and everyday objects, such as bowls and hand axes, to high-tech inventions, such as supersonic aircraft, smart devices, and Mars rovers. Objects speak volumes about a civilization, telling us how our ancestors lived - as well as what they believed in and valued. A bronze cat mummy shows us how highly the ancient Egyptians valued their feline companions, while a mechanical tiger toy tells the story of rising tensions between an Indian sultan and European colonisers. With stunning, specially commissioned photography, Civilization shows you the objects that our ancestors treasured - from the jewellery worn by the Mesopotamians to the prized ritual vessels used by the people of the Shang dynasty - and gives you an insight into what gave each culture its own identity. From astrolabes and aeroplanes to vacuum cleaners and X-rays, DK uses its hallmark visual style to weave the extraordinary legacy of our creativity into a unique view of world history that will change the way you see the objects all around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a scholar wishes to create a picture of a topical society in all its aspects, there is little of what he needs to know that he cannot know, although there may still be much that he cannot understand. For the history of Greece and Rome, there is a great deal that is simply unknowable. From the end of the archaic age of Greece, there is an unbroken sequence of works by Greek and, later, Roman historians down to the end of antiquity. Their vision and range of interest were often limited and much of what they produced has been lost. Some help may be derived from the documentary material supplied in antiquity, material that was the product of officials organising public activities, or heads of families organising their affairs, or individuals leaving their mark on the world. Beyond this, the evidence of archaeology and numismatics may also be helpful. The four essays in this book set out to characterise the nature of the ancient literary tradition, the inscriptional material, the archaeological and numismatic evidence and to explain how and for what purposes they may be used.

Book excerpt: STRONGA compact cornucopia of fascinating and hilarious revelations about all things Scottish—from monarchs and malts to tartans and TrainspottingSTRONG Covering all the need-to-knows, from bagpipes to Billy Connolly, this collection is the real McCoy, a comprehensive guide to Caledonia and its remarkable people. As the proud possessors of a fiercely independent creative heritage, the Scots were a race apart even before Hadrian built the wall. Scotland has produced an indomitable bunch of fighters, builders, thinkers and drinkers, poets, players, and pedagogues that have shaped the course of modern history. Edwin Moore has gathered together more than 1,000 facts about its monarchs, heroes, and rogues; battles, scandals, and great trials; food and (of course) drink; legends, folklore, and sports—for starters—and presents them here in easily digestible, scone-sized portions. This is the perfect gift for anyone curious about the connection between Homer Simpson and small Scottish town Larbert, or about whether both Barack Obama and John McCain can really be descended from a Scottish Lion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America began, we are often told, with the Founding Fathers, the men who waged a revolution and created a unique place called the United States. We may acknowledge the early Jamestown and Puritan colonists and mourn the dispossession of Native Americans, but we rarely grapple with the complexity of the nation's pre-revolutionary past. In this pathbreaking revision, Daniel Richter shows that the United States has a much deeper history than is apparentÑthat far from beginning with a clean slate, it is a nation with multiple pasts that stretch back as far as the Middle Ages, pasts whose legacies continue to shape the present. Exploring a vast range of original sources, Before the Revolution spans more than seven centuries and ranges across North America, Europe, and Africa. Richter recovers the lives of a stunning array of peoplesÑIndians, Spaniards, French, Dutch, Africans, EnglishÑas they struggled with one another and with their own people for control of land and resources. Their struggles occurred in a global context and built upon the remains of what came before. Gradually and unpredictably, distinctive patterns of North American culture took shape on a continent where no one yet imagined there would be nations called the United States, Canada, or Mexico. By seeing these trajectories on their own dynamic terms, rather than merely as a prelude to independence, Richter's epic vision reveals the deepest origins of American history.
