Book Synopsis Black Soldiers in a White Man's War by : Gordon D. Pollock
Download or read book Black Soldiers in a White Man's War written by Gordon D. Pollock and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the story of 600 Black men from across North America and the Caribbean, who, in 1917, went to war in a labour unit, No. 2 Construction Battalion. Regarded then by senior Command as morally infectious, a century later they have become central actors in a powerful cultural myth, celebrated in folk tales, poetry, drama and text. Black Soldiers in a White Man’s War examines critically that mythical narrative. Based on service records of the 600 volunteers and 35 courts-martial in the unit, it probes the lives of these soldiers, who laboured in the forests of France during 1917 and 1918. Black Soldiers in a White Man’s War will shock some, but, for the majority of readers, it will present a fresh, vibrant portrait of a group of young Black men, who at a time of international crisis volunteered to fight the King’s enemies. It will also open readers to experiences these men faced as they returned to a post-war racist society.

Book Synopsis Heritage and Horizon by : Harry A. Renfree
Download or read book Heritage and Horizon written by Harry A. Renfree and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒIn this age of hi-tech, impersonal living, our individual identities are in danger of being submerged and our collective past is easily forgotten. History is therefore more important now than it has been in any previous time. It is a corrective that insists we are not defined as a number in a data bank, but as people who have lived in relation to time and circumstances. Our roots lie not in a code but in interactions with other people and in the flow of daily events. ÒCanadian Baptists have eagerly awaited the day that someone would produce a comprehensive, candid and faithful report of who we are and what major events helped shape our identity. This book can only strengthen Canadian Baptist relationships, as it brings to mind our common or similar beginnings. ÒThe author of this history, Dr. Harry A. Renfree, has done us an immense service by giving us a history worth reflecting upon and one which ought to spur us on to glorify God in His church's mission. Well qualified to share his gifts as writer and interpreter, Dr. Renfree is a Canadian Baptist who has given lifelong leadership in the cause of Christ in this country. ÒMy hope is that the readers of this book will come to understand how Canadian Baptists have sought to serve Christ throughout their history and right up to the present day. May God's leading in this historic endeavour cause us to grieve over the errors of the past, to rejoice in the grace of God that has marked our joyful times and to firmly resolve to go forth in this day in our land to honour the Baptist name through true humility and servanthood.--R. This book was released on 1985 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described as “a history of Baptist beginnings in the several associations in the state,” this rare old volume was widely acclaimed when first published in 1919. No less timely today, this reprint has added value with an index of more than 1600 names. Those interested in the genealogical value of this volume will find Burnett has done an excellent job detailing ancestry, dates and places. There are more than 200 sketches with around sixty photographs. Accepting 1775 as the first recorded date of Baptist entry and effort in the state, this volume covers a period of one hundred very eventful years. There is much data of general historical interest and numerous “firsts.” Of interest to all denominations, it is the perfect gift for a church library as well as a personal gift.
