Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other two colleges, Harvard and Yale gave form to American intercollegiate athletics--a form that was inspired by the Oxford-Cambridge rivalry overseas, and that was imitated by colleges and universities throughout the United States. Focusing on the influence of these prestigious eastern institutions, this fascinating study traces the origins and development of intercollegiate athletics in America from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Smith begins with an historical overview of intercollegiate athletics and details the evolution of individual sports--crew, baseball, track and field, and especially football. Then, skillfully setting various sports events in their broader social and cultural contexts, Smith goes on to discuss many important issues that are still relevant today: student-faculty competition for institutional athletic control; the impact of the professional coach on big-time athletics; the false concept of amateurism in college athletics; and controversies over eligibility rules. He also reveals how the debates over brutality and ethics created the need for a central organizing body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which still runs college sports today. Sprinkled throughout with spicy sports anecdotes, from the Thanksgiving Day Princeton-Yale football game that drew record crowds in the 1890s to a meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt on football violence, this lively, in-depth investigation will appeal to serious sports buffs as well as to anyone interested in American social and cultural history.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the 2008 Harvard Varsity Crew Team and the university's legendary history of accomplished rowers. The Eight is a thrilling, behind-the-scenes look at a group of young men who have given up nearly everything to transform themselves into the best team possible at arguably the world's most venerable rowing institution, Harvard crew. Through a blend of journalistic writing and historical narrative, Saint Sing highlights their struggles and triumphs as she follows them through the spring season of 2008. This exclusive, competitive world is illuminated as never before as the athletes race for the collegiate national championship and one former member achieves a historic first for Harvard: a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. What these men go through physically to earn a seat in the Harvard first eight is just the beginning. The real test of their mettle is the inner athlete called upon to make their dreams a reality in this very tense and dramatic world. Susan Saint Sing's The Eight chronicles the drama of a full season of elite college racing, including the bitter personal struggles and the team's pursuit of excellence.

Book excerpt: When Harvard and Yale met for a rowing race in 1852, American intercollegiate sport was born. From its early, informal days as a gentlemen's competition to its later role as an integral part of organized college athletics, Thomas C. Mendenhall traces the history of The Race through its formative period. The recognized authority on the history of collegiate rowing, Mendenhall covers the personalities, the technical and stylistic controversies, and the grand spectacle of the races themselves in graceful prose heavily illustrated with period images. This book will delight anyone interested in competitive rowing or collegiate athletics.

Book excerpt: In 1975, a group of amazing women rowed their way to international success and glory, battling sexual prejudice, bureaucracy, and male domination in one of the most grueling and competitive sports around. Among the members of the first international women’s crew team--and one of the first women’s teams anywhere--were Gail Pearson, the soft-spoken MIT professor who fought equally hard off the water to win the political battles neccessary for her team to succeed; lead rower Carie Graves, a statuesque bohemian from rural Wisconsin who dropped out of college and later became the most intense rower of the crew; and Lynn Stillman, a tiny sixteen-year-old coxswain from California. On hand to guide them was Harry Parker, the legendary Harvard men’s crew coach who overcame his doubts about the ability of women to withstand the rigors of hard training. From their first dramatic bid at the 1975 World Championships to their preparations for their first Olympic Games in 1976, this gripping story of bravery, determination, and indomitable spirit captures a compelling moment in the history of sports and of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Yale Athletics, 1840-1888: Giving Every Contest With Harvard, Princeton, Pennsylvania, Columbia, Wesleyan, and Others in Rowing, Foot Ball, Base Ball, Track Athletics, Tennis One year after the advent of the Pioneer, the first Yale boat, a thirty-foot, six-oared craft, called the Excelsior, was launched, which was the first race boat built for Yale. This, being manned by a crew of strong and good oarsmen, gave a great impetus to racing and good boat building at Yale. In 1845, the Augusta was bought for $170, which had cost to build some years before, $300. In 1847 also the eight-oared, thirty-eight foot Shawmut was purchased, in which the first race against Harvard was rowed. In 1851 three boats were bought, in 1852 two boats, and in 1853 two more, making in all fifteen boats owned by class clubs of Yale undergraduates dur ing the first ten years of the existence of rowing as a recognized pastime at Yale. Of these six were eight oared, six four-oared, and three six-oared, and all but four were bought second-hand.
