Book Synopsis Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight by : John Roberts
Download or read book Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight written by John Roberts and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight Your own attitude is your brightest guiding star. Some of success is doing what you like to do. But, more of it is doing the things you don’t like to do, but must. It is too easy to make an excuse, and not do it, and fail. –John Roberts As this book goes to press early in 2010, I am 75 and into my fifth year with incurable metastatic prostate cancer, which had already spread to the bones before cancer was diagnosed and the prostate removed. The statistical prognosis for the current treatments of choice is that one-half of these patients will die within three years, 75% within five. This usually happens after the standard treatments and chemotherapy fail and must be discontinued due to harmful side effects or weakening effectiveness, resumed cancer growth, and the failure of bones or key organs. I am still feeling fine, no pain, living a normal life, and I have completed eight months of chemotherapy with a 63% drop in my PSA (prostate cancer blood test) without major side affects or rising PSA. I have fought this cancer and its personal consequences in more than a hundred ways as described here. Above all, a lifetime of fitness, and my current excellent physical and mental condition, supplemented by great medical care and everything else I can learn or think of, is partially responsible for my success in living beyond the average life span for my particular fatal disease. We cannot know which weapon or how much each one contributes to the extension of life, so we must use them all. The doctors all say that cancer survival is very unpredictable, and I figured that many of the positive outcomes must depend on how comprehensively and how hard the individual fights. So, I immediately started this book and organized my fight. I was extremely unfortunate: most prostate cancer either is so slow growing, or eliminated by removal, that survivors live for many years. In my case, it had already spread, or metastasized, to the bones prior to the operation, and that cancer is inoperable and incurable. But, some people in that condition die very early, while others, like me, live much longer. This is highly unpredictable in individual cases due to variation in patient condition, treatment effectiveness, and other unknowns. More than half of all people newly diagnosed with cancer will be cured or given extended remission. They will die of something else. Of the other half, a large number have treatable cancer and they still have many years to live. The remainder, probably including me, have learned that they have incurable cancer that has grown too strong or spread and taken root in such places that it cannot be killed or removed and death is likely in the next few months or years. Nevertheless, normally incurable cancer and conventional predictability sometimes fail, and others may prolong life by fighting with strong mental and physical effort. As the disease progresses and is treated, and science advances, sometimes in great leaps, we are rarely sure of which group we are in. That uncertainty, that hope, and the dreadful power of cancer, call for great strength of character and effort in both patients and those around them. This book is about that. The animal instinct to survive is, in humans alone, expanded in our unique cortex to something much greater––the intelligent understanding of self-awareness and an intense desire to prolong the experience, growth, and emotion of life. The human spirit, beyond the mere motivation of existence, is largely responsible for all that our species has conquered and achieved. It is an essential quality to be trained, treasured, and put to use, and one of the finest ways is to survive, continue, and improve our exceptional life through our collective and individual intellect. In the last century, medical science, the visibility of living in distant years, and the recognition that we are, and can be, responsible for increasing our own longevity have ad

Book Synopsis Don't Stress It's Only Cancer by : Kimberley Strong
Download or read book Don't Stress It's Only Cancer written by Kimberley Strong and published by . This book was released on 2023-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book I wish I had when I was diagnosed with cancer. There are many many cancer books out there. Lots of survivors have documented their journeys and those are all terrific resources I'm sure, but when I was diagnosed I simply didn't have the stamina to read someone else's memoir. I wanted a realistic idea of what I had ahead of me: in a short and easy-to-digest format, indexed so I could find the most relevant parts, with funny anecdotes, helpful tips, and also just a warts and all guide on what to expect. I wrote that book. Cancer is serious stuff. But it also lasts a very long time even if things go well. I don't think anyone should be that serious for that long. It's not healthy. If laughter is medicine, then please enjoy the tips in this book on how to play the cancer card, how to get the most out of your diagnosis, how to laugh at yourself, how to make it through when you feel like you won't, and generally how to look on the bright side of cancer.
Download or read book New Beginnings written by Bill Aron and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 Inspirational Stories and Beautiful, Uplifting Photos of Survivors. “You have cancer” are three of the most terrifying words a person can hear, and our culture does little to ease the fear. New Beginnings: 100 Cancer Survivors follows one hundred survivors who discovered that those words were the start of a new beginning, not an end to their lives. New Beginnings is a collection of narratives and energetic photographic portraits of men, women, children, and families that inspire and provide hope for anyone diagnosed with cancer as well as for their families and friends. The survivors vary in age, ethnicity, and diagnosis, but they all share the ability to turn a diagnosis of cancer into a positive force in their lives. Coming from all walks of life, survivors include Sally Craigen, who beat two different cancers three decades apart but who never let it stop her from enjoying life; Rabbi William Cutter, who had already survived three heart attacks by the time he faced down prostate cancer on two occasions; Sophia Colby, diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis at fifteen months of age, who has survived more in her ten years than many people do in their entire lives; and professional basketball player Coby Karl, who hasn’t let two bouts from thyroid cancer stop him from chasing his dreams; and ninety-six others. This is a project by and for cancer survivors: their words, Bill Aron's photographs, in collaboration with their ideas and sensibilities. This is their book.

Book excerpt: Stop feeling like victims and regain the ability to control your health by choosing to live and be healed completely - and even spontaneously - from cancer. Cancer: 100 Things To Do Besides Chemo presents to those suffering from cancer a new option: stop feeling like victims and regain the ability to control their health by choosing to live and be healed completely - and even spontaneously - from cancer. Michal was healed from cancer when she was only 22, after she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma stage 4. This book is a unique opportunity to learn from Michal her active approach in the process of healing from cancer, rather than getting carried away with the events and letting things happen. In her belief, cancer has become a worldwide problem which suffers from too much information - an industry which offers so many methods, books, diets, treatments, and studies that claim to have the answer. This leads cancer patients on a long search full of uncertainty about a cure, which costs them valuable time. Despite all the information available today, Michal finds that the cure for cancer is within reach; we can find it faster than previously imagined - it is found within our minds and the lifestyle we choose to live. As simple as that. In essence, this book is a summary of the best paths and tips she learned along the way - the ones that have stayed with her and that she uses to this day, more than 15 years after being completely cured of cancer. - Fast tips to consider - The book is short for a reason: to provide readers with fast tips to consider, steps to integrate into their lives, and habits to reconsider and change. Don't underestimate a single step. Each of the steps, even the smallest, makes up an essential part of the whole equation of being healthy and happy forever. - A tool of great importance - The book is a tool of great importance for any cancer patient, patients' families and their children, as well as doctors, nurses, and social workers. XXX This book is not intended to prevent, diagnose, treat or cure disease. The book was written by a former cancer patient. The author wrote this book to share her personal research, experience and opinion, not to provide medical advice.
