Download or read book Archaic Greece written by Nick Fisher and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of archaic Greece (c. 750-480 BC) is being transformed by exciting discoveries and interpretations. In fourteen original studies from a distinguished international cast, this book explores many aspects of a rapidly changing Greek world. Detailed re-interpretation of archaeological material reveals diversity in patterns of settlement, sanctuaries and burial practices, and shows motivations underlying the expanding exchange of goods and the settlement of new communities. Local studies of archaeology and iconography revise our image of the peculiarity of Spartan society and East Greek cult. Texts, from Homer and Hesiod to a newly-found poem of Simonides, are given fresh interpretations. And there are new studies of developments in maritime warfare, the roles of literacy and law-making in Crete, the emergence of a less violent Greek life-style, and the articulation of political thought.

Book excerpt: Munich's Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1808, became one of the most important institutions In Europe for training artists in the second half of the 19th century. The Academy attracted students from across Europe, and the United States. This volume examines the ?Munich school, ? its development and influence, the migration of its style and the effect art students have on their surroundings. Existing studies of American painters in Munich focus on leading representatives from the peak of the movement in the early 1870s and 1880s, when the realism of the returning artists' paintings caused something of a sensation in the American art world, up to the 1930?s. This complex phenomenon must be investigated in its entirety, taking into account the development of styles and genres over half a century, experienced by more than 420 American students, and also by a number of American artists who studied elsewhere in town.

Book Synopsis The German Mittelweg by : Michael G. Lee
Download or read book The German Mittelweg written by Michael G. Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1790s, a close-knit group of German philosophers published several garden theory texts. These works are unique in that a close-knit group of philosophers had never before--and has not since--produced so many works on the topic of garden design. In essence, this cohort sought to imbue the most visionary concepts that had been inherited from the German garden tradition with the intellectual resources that were newly available through Kant’s critical philosophy. The most important of these concepts was the prescription for a new Mittelweg, or "middle path," garden that would mediate between the perceived excesses of French formalism and the English picturesque. In close analysis, the author demonstrates that Kant used similar "middle path" techniques in the design of his own "critical path" between dogmatism and skepticism. This similarity is most apparent when he uses topographical metaphors to describe the organizational principles of his system. By interpreting Kant’s topographical metaphors in relation to contemporary garden theories, this book offers new insights into the structural similarities between his "critical path" and the German garden’s "middle path" between French formalism and the English picturesque.
