Handel und Handwerk waren prägend für die Städte, die einen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung erlebten, welcher die Menschen vom Land in die Stadt strömen ließ. Auch oder besonders die Stadt Köln spielte eine wesentlich wirtschaftliche Rolle. Von ihr sind besonders viele historische Quellen erhalten geblieben und historisch erforscht worden. Für die Forschung wichtig und interessant geworden sind, spätestens seit Karl Büchers Arbeit "Die Frauenfrage im Mittelalter" zu Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts, die Frauen und ihre wirtschaftliche, aber auch ihre rechtliche und soziale Stellung im Mittelalter. Die Situation der Frau wurde bereits in der historischen Literatur anhand der vorhandenen Quellen untersucht. In dieser Arbeit soll dargestellt werden, wie die soziale und rechtliche Lage der Kölner Frauen zur Zeit des Spätmittelalters ausgesehen hat. Auch hierzu wurden Untersuchungen, vor allem von Margret Wensky, bereits unternommen, die für diese Arbeit herangezogen werden. Zu Beginn wird ein kurzer Überblick über die historische, wirtschaftliche und politische Situation des spätmittelalterlichen Kölns gegeben. Im Anschluss daran soll die Rolle der Frau im Spätmittelalter allgemein betrachtet werden, um die Stellung der Kölner Frau besser einordnen zu können. Viele berühmte Bauwerke zieren diese Stadt am Rhein, wie die eindrucksvollen Kirchenbauten, insbesondere der Kölner Dom, das Tanzhaus Gürzenich, das Overstolzenhaus oder die Häuser der Kölner Gaffeln und Ämter. Eine weitere Besonderheit dieser vielseitigen und multikulturellen Stadt war es, dass auch Frauen an Handwerk und Handel auf vielerlei Weise beteiligt waren und mehr Rechte und Freiheiten besaßen als in anderen deutschen Städten des Spätmittelalters. Zudem gab es in Köln Zünfte, in welchen fast ausschließlich Frauen arbeiteten. Dies war im europäischen Spätmittelalter ein außergewöhnlicher Umstand, da sogenannte Frauenzünfte nur noch für Paris und Zürich bezeugt sind. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich daher speziell auf die Kölner Frauenzünfte der Garnmacherinnen, Goldspinnerinnen und des Seidengewerbes eingehen. Doch im ersten Kapitel werde ich zunächst eine Skizze Kölns im Spätmittelalter erstellen, um daraufhin einen kurzen Einblick in die Stellung der Frauen in dieser Stadt geben zu können. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt vor allem auf die rechtliche und soziale Situation der Frauen in Handel und Handwerk gelegt. Daraufhin folgt das Kapitel, in welchem ich näher auf die Frauenzünfte und die rechtliche, soziale und wirtschaftliche Lage der Zunftgenossinnen eingehen werde. Im Anschluss darauf erfolgt das Fazit. Die Erforschung der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Lage der Frauen im Mittelalter begann Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts, wobei Ausgangspunkt dieser Forschung fast ausschließlich die sogenannte Frauenfrage war, welche einen Überschuss an Frauen mit 20% gegenüber Männern in der Stadt Nürnberg um 1449 annimmt. Dies wurde von Karl Bücher anhand einer Zählung errechnet, die der Rat der Stadt Nürnberg aufgrund der gefährlichen Lage im Markgrafenkrieg durchführte, um die vorhandenen Getreidevorräte und Einwohnerzahlen zu erfahren.Die Annahme eines Überschusses an Frauen im Spätmittelalter ist jedoch in der heutigen Forschung umstritten. Für manche Städte im Spätmittelalter wie die Stadt Freiburg im Breisgau wurde ein Männerüberschuss errechnet. Doch da es im Mittelalter keine expliziten Statistiken gab und auch in Zählungen viele Personen unberücksichtigt blieben, lässt sich das Gegenteil ebenso wenig beweisen.

Today, "He is the sun, she is the moon" might be interpreted as a hierarchy of dominance and subordination. At the time it was used, however, sun and moon reflected the different but equal status of husband and wife. Wunder shows how the history of women and the history of gender relations can provide crucial insights into how societies organize themselves and provide resources for political action. She observes actual circumstances as well as the normative rules that were supposed to guide women's lives. We learn what skills were necessary to take charge of households, what people ate, how they furnished their homes, what birth control measures were available, what role women played in peasant protest. The regency of noble women was normal, as was the shared responsibility of wife and husband in a peasant household, an artisan's workshop, or a merchant's business. Using sources as diverse as memoirs, wedding and funeral sermons, novels, and chronicles, and including a wealth of demographic information, Wunder reveals a surprising new image of early modern women and provides a richer interpretation of early modern Europe.
