Book Synopsis Herodian Judaism and New Testament Study by : William Horbury
Download or read book Herodian Judaism and New Testament Study written by William Horbury and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of William Horbury's recent essays. Those collected in Part I seek to trace the profile of Herodian Jewish piety, its Greek and Roman setting, and its reflection in Christianity. Monotheism, mysticism, perceptions of Moses and the Temple are all considered in this way, and a Jewish context for the term 'gospel' and the institution of 'the Lord's Supper' is suggested. Part II treats modern New Testament study, with special attention to its links with study of the classical and Jewish traditions, and a survey on British study in its international setting.

Book excerpt: Reflections on the Early Christian History of Religion documents the results of two recent workshops on Martin Hengel's and Maria Schwemer's first volume of first volume of Geschichte des frühen Christentums (Jesus und das Judentum [title of vol. 1], Tübingen 2007) and Larry Hurtado's Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity (Grand Rapids 2003). The contributors, including Hengel himself, focus on problems and possibilities of studying and presenting Christian religion in Roman Antiquity. They discuss distinctive features of these two remarkable publications and some material aspects that illustrate the relationship between the historical study of early Christian religion, religious studies in general and New Testament studies in particular.

Book Synopsis Living in the Flesh by the Spirit by : Brian H. Thomas
Download or read book Living in the Flesh by the Spirit written by Brian H. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Paul mean by "the flesh"? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to "walk by the Spirit" so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian's relationship to the flesh--are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of "flesh" throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of "flesh" as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul's thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul's thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul's own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.

Book Synopsis Ablution, Initiation, and Baptism by : David Hellholm
Download or read book Ablution, Initiation, and Baptism written by David Hellholm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.
