Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology for Medical Students This volume represents in book form the Lecture course in Zoology for medical students as it has evolved during recent years in the University of Glasgow. The task of designing and conducting a course in Zoology that will play its proper part in the education of the graduate in medicine is no light one. It is made immensely heavier by certain conditioning factors, above all in the case of our Scottish universities, by the compulsory limitation of the course within a period of ten weeks. This renders it necessary for the teacher to confine himself rigidly to those parts of the subject which can really justify the expenditure upon them of the necessary time from the short period available. In deciding what portions of the vast science of Zoology satisfy this condition, the teacher has to be guided by certain governing principles. Above all he must have clearly defined in his mind what he regards as the main objects of his course. So far as the present writer is concerned he has kept before him three objects which he believes to be of pre eminent importance. I. To awaken and develop, so far as the animal kingdom is concerned, interest in biological science. Medical students are training themselves to be efficient practitioners of a particular department of applied biology. It is of vital importance that they should become inspired at the earliest possible stage in their curriculum with a living interest in the study of the animal body. One of the first endeavours then of the teacher of Zoology should be to cast over the minds of his pupils some of the fascination of the most fascinating of sciences, so that they may pass on their way quickened and inspired by the stimulus of its interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Zoology: For Students of Medicine and First Year Students of Science Whether the student is to specialise in Medicine or Agri culture or is to pursue a course in Pure Science, his knowledge of Zoology must be founded upon and can only be obtained by personal enquiry with reference to a series of types. The types are selected with a view to his finding out for himself the more important facts of comparative anatomy, physiology and embryology, gaining practice in methods of study, and forming an acquaintance with the literature of the subject. These are the essentials, and Should be conveyed by the teacher without undue bias as to the future studies of the student, and without particular reference to the problems which happen to be the fashion of the moment. This work is arranged as a guide to the student in acquiring this essential fundamental knowledge. The types chosen are those used in the majority of the Universities and Schools, or are nearly allied to them. More are described than teachers have time usually to accomplish in the First Year but in this respect it will meet the requirements of teachers who have the Opportunity of adopting the recommendation Of the General Medical Council that specialised instruction in Biology in its application to Medicine should be included in the medical curriculum. The types are arranged in zoological sequence, and tables are given to indicate their systematic position. Nevertheless, the description of each is complete enough to permit the study commencing with reference to any one of them. The types selected, moreover, are generally distributed, or allied forms may be readily procured, so that the book may be used by students in other countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Medical Zoology At the present time there is no standard work in the English language upon Medical Zoology, the only book especially devoted to this subject being Dr. Stephenson's Medical Zoology and Mineralogy, which was published as far back as 1832. The numerous treatises on Materia Medica refer only to those animals which are employed as remedial agents, while the writers on practical medicine seldom give more than a mere outline of the Entozoa and of those Animals which are injurious to man. The work of M. Tandon contains a more complete account of the Human Entozoa, and of those Animals which are either ih jurions or beneficial to man in a medical point of view, and is furnished with a larger number of illustrations, than any previous publication on the same subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Zoology AN English translation of Dr. Boas's Lehrbuch der Zoologie, which has already appeared in two Danish and two German editions, has been arranged in the hope that it may prove useful to yet a larger public. The translation is designed, in the first place, to assist beginners in the study of Zoology but the needs of students of Medicine, of Veterinary Surgery, and of Forestry have also been kept in View. It will be noticed that Dr. Boas gives prominence to facts rather than to theories, and of these, such as should be of use to one or other of the classes of readers just enumerated, or as should be most convenient for verification. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Zoology This book is intended to serve as a text for beginning students in universities and colleges, or for students who have already taken a course in general biology and wish to gain a more com prehensive View of the animal kingdom. It differs from many of the college textbooks of zoology now on the market in several important respects: (1) the animals and their organs are not only described, but their functions are pointed out; (2) the ani mals described are in most cases native species; and (3) the relations of the animals to man are emphasized. Besides serv ing as a textbook, it is believed that this book will be of interest to the general reader, since it gives a bird's-eye View of the entire animal kingdom as we know it at the present time. Within the past decade there has been a tendency for teachers of zoology to pay less attention to morphology and more to physiology. As a prominent morphologist recently said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's d104-Book of Zoology, Vol. 1 IN preparing the present work I have been actuated mainly by the desire to place before English students of Zoology a treatise in which the subject was dealt with on the lines followed with so much advantage by Claus and his predecessors in their works on Zoology. My original intention was to bring out a new edition of Claus' Lehrbuch, revised and brought up, to date, and a trace of this intention may be seen in a few pages of the present volume. But this plan was, for various reasons, soon given up, and the present treatise is, with the exception of about twenty pages, an. Entirely new work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Zoology and Mineralogy, or Illustrations and Descriptions of the Animals and Minerals Employed in Medicine, and of the Preparations Derived From Them: Including Also an Account of Animal and Mineral Poisons The flesh is eaten by the natives notwithstanding its strong flavour of musk, and the skins are manufactured into bonnets and winter dresses, by the Tungusians and the Russians but the animal is chiefly hunted for the sake of the perfume. It is chiefly in the rutting season that the bag of the animal becomes filled with musk, when it diffuses a very strong and penetrating odour. At that period, irritated by its abundance, the creature rubs itself against rocks and trees, and thus occasionally ruptures the bag, and the musk escapes from it. The musk thus ejected is carefully gathered, from the places where it occurs, as it possesses in a very eminent degree, all the peculiar qualities of the musk; that which is taken from the bag, not being always mature. According to Tavernier, the best and greatest quantity of musk comes from the kingdom of Bontan, whence it is carried for sale to Patna, in Bengal. After killing the animal, the peasants cut off the bag, which is about the size of a pigeon's egg, and is situ ated nearer the organs of generation than the navel. As soon as the bag is cut away, a small hollow reed is inserted into it, that the musk may not suffer, which it would be apt to do from want of air, and the whole is tied round with a sinew of the animal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Zoology Another departure from the preceding editions consists in the attempt to avoid a cleavage between structure and function in the descriptions of individual organs and organ systems, by combining the discussion Of structure with that Of function, as far as possible. The aim, Of course, is to emphasize the essential unity of structure and function. Thus metabolism is discussed in connection with the structure of the individual organs con cerned rather than pigeonholed in a separate chapter. Similarly, examples Of different tissues are described as they are encountered in the study of gross anatomy rather than under a separate head ing at the beginning Of the book, where they have but little meaning for the student. Instead of wishing or expecting that uniformity of opinion should be established, 1 arn convinced that it is neither practicable nor desirable that varieties of thought are as numerous, and as strongly marked, and as irreducible to one standard, as those of bodily form and that to quarrel with one, who thinks differently from ourselves, would be no less unreasonable than to be angry with him for having features unlike our own.
