Book excerpt: A exploracao dos algodoeiros arboreo (Gossypium hirsutum L.r. marie galante Hutch.) e o herbaceo (Gossypium hirsutum L.r. latifolium Hutch.) e uma das principais alternativas para a agricultura no Nordeste brasileiro. Para que as cultivares sintetizadas e adaptadas para a regiao externem, em termos de produtividade e qualidade de fibra, alem da reducao de custos, o seu potencial genetico, elaborou-se o zoneamento para essas racas, detalhe para o algodao arboreo (moco) com base em informacoes edafoclimaticas e no conhecimento acumulado na referida area, com relacao a pragas e doencas. Constatou-se que dos nove Estados nordestinos apenas cinco apresentam areas aptas ao plantio do algodoeiro arboreo, existindo um limite natural para as duas racas, e quatro sao aptos so para o plantio do algodoeiro herbaceo. Os resultados apresentados serao uteis como referencial para que os agentes fomentadores da cultura possam direcionar suas acoes.
