Isaiah said: Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Judah, for the Lord hath comforted his people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exploration of the origins and development of Zionism, illustrating the theory and history of the Zionist movement and the creation of the state of Israel. In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in Middle Eastern affairs. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is a constant theme on television and in newspapers. Yet there is considerable misunderstanding about the origins and ideology of the Zionist movement. This volume seeks to address these issues by providing a concise but comprehensive guide to the origins and development of Zionism from its inception in the nineteenth century until the creation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948. Dan Cohn-Sherbok explores how, in the early stages of Zionism, a number of Jewish thinkers including religious Zionists, spiritual Zionists and secular Zionists formulated various theories about the need for a Jewish homeland. Illustrating the history of the Zionist movement up to the creation of Israel in 1948, the author also provides an extensive explanation of the various forms of anti-Zionism which emerged in the early history of the Zionist movement.

Book excerpt: "This book is, to some extent, about Zionist history. However, my aim has not been to discover hidden historical facts, or to reveal, à la Von Ranke, "what Zionist history really was". Instead, I mainly intended to elaborate about the writers of the Israeli "republic of letters" from a socialist perspective, a perspective which still exists in this reality of exclusivist Israeli-Jewish nationhood. Hence, the relevance and importance of the critique contained in this book are twofold: political and theoretical. As a political activist, I criticized Zionism a priori, as the late, ultra- nationalist response to the failure of Jewish emancipation in Central and Eastern Europe. However, after further study and thought, I realized that historically the Zionist project was mostly accomplished by the Zionist labour movement. The geographical, historical and ideological context within which this movement was formed was that of the Russian revolutionary movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the early Zionist movement, then in a state of flux, still had the potential to opt for more enlightened ways to realize its Jewish national idea. The second part consists of a dual negation of two prominent approaches in Israeli contemporary "republic of letters": the apologetic writings of the neo-Zionist school, as well as the criticism for criticism's sake of the post-Zionist school, which renders the inspirational, educative and revolutionary voice of the intellectual irrelevant and unheeded."--

Book excerpt: In this book, Rubinstein Grapples with the question of what happened to the Zionist dream by reviewing historical Zionist ideology and tracing its development and the development of other ideological, political, and conceptual responses to what Jewish nationalism should be. The Six Day War is viewed as a turning point in Zionist and Israeli history. He analyzes the conditions that gave rise to "gush emunim" and religious militant political groups. In "the end of the Sabra myth", Rubinstein describes the new Israelis and concludes that Israel's future depends on its ability to return to some of the traditional Zionist values.

But the authors of this work contend that the biblical and theological connections between covenant and land are nearly as close in the New Testament as in Old. Written with academic rigor, this provocative volume proposes a place for Christian Zionism in an integrated biblical vision today.

Book excerpt: Where pregnancy is concerned, let every pregnancy be for everyone. Let us overthrow, in short, the “family” The surrogacy industry is estimated to be worth over $1 billion a year, and many of its surrogates around the world work in terrible conditions—deception, wage-stealing and money skimming are rife; adequate medical care is horrifyingly absent; and informed consent is depressingly rare. In Full Surrogacy Now, Sophie Lewis brings a fresh and unique perspective to the topic. Often, we think of surrogacy as the problem, but, Full Surrogacy Now argues, we need more surrogacy, not less! Rather than looking at surrogacy through a legal lens, Lewis argues that the needs and protection of surrogates should be put front and center. Their relationship to the babies they gestate must be rethought, as part of a move to recognize that reproduction is productive work. Only then can we begin to break down our assumptions that children “belong” to those whose genetics they share. Taking collective responsibility for children would radically transform our notions of kinship, helping us to see that it always takes a village to make a baby.
