Book excerpt: Divination is the art of extracting hidden meaning from the present by using supernatural tools, symbols, or oracles, as guidance for the future. The Zingari (Italian Gypsies) often used keen observation of physical characteristics to interpret possible future outcomes. Since time immemorial, human beings have tried to understand the forces of fate through a variety of imaginative and mystical means. Whether its reading tea leaves, using playing cards, dice, palmistry, or recognizing and interpreting omens, the history of fortune telling is a long one. The Zingari people loved the meadows, woods and flowers, and living far from the haunts of men. Thus, they got nearer to the heart of nature, and were better able to lift the veil from the future and learn a thousand secrets that the dwellers in cities could not know or understand. While the type of information discovered had different values, such as reading the weather was very important to farmers, sailors and others who depended on nature for their living. The love readings, while not related to life and death, were also important socially and emotionally. I have written down many things that are matters of personal knowledge, and besides these I have consulted numerous ancient manuscripts, and have also added certain deductions from modern sources so that you may enjoy and learn from The Zingara Art of Divination. -- Ana Caldaroni

Book excerpt: As there is One Spirit that speaks to us, there is only One Speaking, One Oracle. The root meaning of the word oracle is, after all, simply the Latin orare, meaning to speak. The Oracle, then, is the Speaking of the One Spirit, regardless of the specific divinatory method through which it speaks. In that vein, this book is intended as a companion for diviners in their relationship with the Oracle, whether the method they are using to communicate with the Oracle is the I Ching, Tonalpohuolli, Astrology, Tarot, Cabala, Numerology, Geomancy, Feng Shui, Runes, Crystal Gazing, or any of the other time-tested methods of divination. To be a diviner means penetrating the veil of the five senses and perceiving the eternal at work in the temporal. By way of an analogy: a water dowser, also called a water diviner, does not look for future water-on the contrary, the dowser is looking for present water that is hidden beneath the surface. So it is with the act of divination: we are not trying to tell the future; we are, on the contrary, attempting to know what is present beneath the surface of the five senses. The art of divination is to step outside the flow of time in order to clearly perceive and accurately interpret the symbols of the eternal ideas. This act of perceiving the unfolding of present circumstances is an integral aspect of adapting to and guiding the ongoing manifestation of spirit.Divinations used to be cast for the emperor to decide, for example, if the capital city ought to be moved or if the nation ought to go to war. Every divination ought to be undertaken with a similar sense of gravitas.

Book excerpt: An examination of subversive games like The Sims—games designed for political, aesthetic, and social critique. For many players, games are entertainment, diversion, relaxation, fantasy. But what if certain games were something more than this, providing not only outlets for entertainment but a means for creative expression, instruments for conceptual thinking, or tools for social change? In Critical Play, artist and game designer Mary Flanagan examines alternative games—games that challenge the accepted norms embedded within the gaming industry—and argues that games designed by artists and activists are reshaping everyday game culture. Flanagan provides a lively historical context for critical play through twentieth-century art movements, connecting subversive game design to subversive art: her examples of “playing house” include Dadaist puppet shows and The Sims. She looks at artists’ alternative computer-based games and explores games for change, considering the way activist concerns—including worldwide poverty and AIDS—can be incorporated into game design. Arguing that this kind of conscious practice—which now constitutes the avant-garde of the computer game medium—can inspire new working methods for designers, Flanagan offers a model for designing that will encourage the subversion of popular gaming tropes through new styles of game making, and proposes a theory of alternate game design that focuses on the reworking of contemporary popular game practices.
